Congrats on coming to a decision! Did you call UNC?

Yes, the person I spoke with told me to email Laurie Paul. She said it was highly unlikely I would be accepted (I was third on the wait list for one spot) and that she wouldn't know for definite until after 5. So, I just made a decision. I am delighted.

  3. I am soooooo stressed. I have been accepted by FSU and I am on the wait list at UNC. FSU wants to know by 4pm and UNC still hasn't been in touch. If UNC admits me, how am I supposed to decide in this amount of time??

  4. I am on the wait list at UNC-Chapel Hill and Florida State. If you are inclined to decline an offer / wait list, please do so! Good luck with decisions!

Not me, but a grad student in one of my classes told me he'd heard absolutely nothing from UNC until April 15th, when they suddenly called him to tell him he'd been accepted off the waitlist. So it's possible you're in a similar situation.

I receiving a resounding rejection a while ago. So maybe you're a borderline case of being accepted.

One can only hope--I think I'll phone on Monday and ask for an update. I have heard nothing.

Question -- According to the results page all of the brown admits are international. Does that seem weird to anyone? (Is it possible they are releasing domestic and international results separately? Or did they really just give the majority if not all offers to international students? The latter would surprise me due to the usual funding restrictions for international students).

There are funding restrictions at public universities. Brown, however, has a multi-billion dollar endowment.

We don't pay application fees, but we do end up paying for other things. Like Interfolio costs, transcript costs, snail mail costs, APA costs, transcript "translation" costs (if one of our degrees is from a "foreign" institution, viz., outside the US), etc. Multiplied by 100 or more, not ten or twenty.

Don't get me wrong: I think PhD applicants should be notified, and in a timely fashion. I'm just saying that departments don't care about those they reject at any level. Often, they don't even care about those they shortlist either.

I apologize for my ignorance! Departments should be courteous to all applicants.

Oh man. Still 6 out of 7 applications outstanding. I really, really need a win this week... I'm not getting any work done, I'm not sleeping well, my chest feels like it's in a vice all the time. This whole process is cruel and unusual.

I think I've caught a bit of a depression bug, too. :( My "friends" have put me into a bit of a funk. The mathematicians I know have all found out many of their decisions and one who isn't actually applying for anything made a snarky comment like "You can sit at the grown up table when you've actually heard from graduate schools." And in an unrelated incident the next day, some other mathematicians wrote in the undergraduate math commons "No logic in this room please" and "Set Theory isn't a real math." I've been super depressed since then and unable to function normally.

I'm sorry you are feeling low! I went through a really tough time last year and my GP really helped me. Is that something you could consider? I have never understood the need folks feel to say what's philosophy (or mathematics) and what's not. Insecurity? Good luck.
