Fall 2017 Applicants
anxiousphd replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm not sure if this is reassuring, or just prolonging our worries. Regardless, best of luck to you, Warelin, and all other OSU applicants. I'd love for us all to get in and have a wonderful GradCafe cohort. -

I don't know about what one should do, but for today I'm worried about admissions committees (looking at you, Ohio State). I'll save worrying about Trump for tomorrow at the Women's March. -

Never mind, I just got my rejection, too -

I'm sorry to hear that! I'm sure you'll get in somewhere that's an even better fit. I applied to Duke as well, so now I'm having a heart attack. As of yet, no email and no change to my application status. -
Fall 2017 Applicants

True! A little perspective is definitely a good thing when academia is getting me down. For the record: I still recognize my relative privilege, despite being very anxious about Ph.D. apps and a little jealous of others' recent successes. Here's to hoping all GradCafe-ers have their own successes to report in the near future! -

I appreciate the encouragement! think I'm getting extra anxious because the people close to me are all getting big news (engagements, full time jobs) and I'm desperate for my own big news. I hope you're right! At the very least, you're comforting -

First Emory, now UMD? I guess I'm 0 for 2 thus far -
No interviews...am I to assume all application unsuccessful?
anxiousphd replied to tsatsang2129's topic in Waiting it Out
Two of the programs to which I've applied (allegedly) sent out interview invites today, and I didn't get one. I'm going to go ahead and consider them rejections. -

I applied to Emory and haven't gotten an interview invite (yet?). Here's hoping that isn't a death sentence. -
2017 Acceptances

I applied to OSU! Freaking out because if they follow precedent, we may hear from them within the next week. *shrieks* -
Chances of MA acceptance
anxiousphd replied to darcyt's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Hi! I did not end up attending Villanova's MA, but I applied with a similar GPA (3.8, I think) and was accepted. I was waitlisted for funding. Funding is always competitive, but I think you have a good shot to be accepted! Good luck! -

It's a trap! Once you're on there, it is SO difficult not to obsess! I've made "projections" of when I expect to hear back from my schools based on when they notified for English PhDs in the last two years... On the one hand, it's keeping me from obsessing until late January. On the other hand, it may drive me insane come late January. Best of luck to you! Try not to freak out too much; I'm not a Comp Lit person, but I imagine studying abroad will help to make you one of the top applicants. -
How many programs are you applying to?
anxiousphd replied to JessicaLange's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I applied to eleven Ph.D. programs. People outside of academia tend to be astonished by that number. Fellow academics simply nod. -
Are any current UConn English students free this Thursday night or any time Friday? I will be presenting at the LANGSA conference, and it would be great to meet a student from the English department, since UConn is on my list!

I Bombed the Subject Test. Now What?
anxiousphd replied to anxiousphd's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks for this insight! Everyone seems to agree with you that retaking is not my best option. I may or may not apply to NYU-- my main draws to their program are the city and the amount of MA transfer credit they accept. -
I recently received my Subject Test score, and it is BAD. Laughably bad. Only 2 of the 11 PhD programs to which I'm applying () require it, and 1 recommends it. Should I retake the test? If you took the test multiple times, did you do significantly better the next time? What did you do to prepare for the second time? Also, does anyone have any insight as to how important Subject Tests are at these programs? If I decide not to retake the test, should I not apply to programs which require it? I appreciate any and all advice.

Fall 2017 Applicants
anxiousphd replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I expanded my list from 8 programs to 10, and I think I have a good 'range' now- some top programs, some near the middle, some less well-ranked but still respectable. Before I felt like I was lacking in the middle. I hope we all have good luck next application cycle! -

Wow, it's amazing that you researched programs so thoroughly! I've worked my way down to 10 schools. I'm worried that 10 is both too many and not enough. Does anyone have any advice on this?
