  1. I'm pretty much in the same situation. I was rejected by all PhD programs (history) that I applied to , but I got accepted by MAPSS with half tuition scholarship. Right now, I'm struggling with the same issue about its cost. Basically, my friends who know something about the program encourage me to go, while the ones outside the academic circle remind me to think twice about the cost. In the end, we need to make the decision on our own. I mean, 50,000 dollars can be a lot for us right now, but looking back 10 years from now, it may not be much. In addition, taking the program offers a more promising future application, otherwise it can be a dead end for life. I am inclined to take the program because we will have the rest of our lives making money, but an offer from a top school may come only once. Feel free to message me if you want to talk more.
  2. I got admission from the same program and I'm curious about the same question (among many others).
  3. Hey telkanuru, the format I'm using is author, book name (New York: publisher, year), page number. Thanks !
  4. Hey guys, I've got 2 simple questions here regarding to how to reference newspaper and diary. 1, With a sentence retrieved from The Daily Colonist, July 14, 1908 (A Canadian newspaper), for example, do I need to specify the topic of the passage or page number ? Or can I simply stay with: The Daily Colonist, July 14, 1908. 2, Another resource I'm using is the diary of Mackenzie King, a Canadian prime minister. The database is officially called: Diaries of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, MG26-J13. It is posted on the internet, and gives the information of item number, as well as the date of his recording. When I reference it, is this the right format to use: W.L.Mackenzie King, Diaries of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King (Toronto: Rowsell & Hutchison, 1893), 50. Do I need to add the archive number or item number? Here's a link to look at his diary online. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/politics-government/prime-ministers/william-lyon-mackenzie-king/Pages/diaries-william-lyon-mackenzie-king.aspx Thanks!
  5. Hey guys, one quick question in regard to scholarship. It looks to me that when we apply for PhD programs, we are automatically counted as a scholarship applicant for the school. But other than those scholarships offered by the schools, what are some other opportunities worth trying? Are there any specific scholarships open to history students only? Thanks!
  6. I'm from Canada. But if I were to apply to schools in the States, I guess I'm counted as an international student as well.
  7. Thanks ashiepoo72, I only registered yesterday and you can imagine how nervous I was! Thanks again for your reply!
  8. You are in U of Hawaii? Did anyone tell you if there's a "ceiling"? When I got my quantitative I was surprised, for I thought I knew all the questions, but then I realized that no one cares about that score....
  9. Hey knp, thanks for you reply! Of course I would prefer listening to you! A graduate student from Yale also said that my score should be enough and the committee doesn't look at it very seriously, but it was in 2008 when he enrolled! It's been a long time and I'm not sure if his assumption still applies.
  10. I did GRE in September and had a diarrhoea the night before the exam. I barely slept that night and had to skip some questions for I was already brain dead after 2.5 hours. The result is 158V 163Q 5.5AW. If I want to apply to PhD at Yale, Penn, Chicago, Duke, do I need to retake it? What is likely to be the "ceiling" for history departments? I'm really running out of time right now. And do GRE scores matter in terms of scholarship application? I tried to reach their admission offices, but it was no use. Thanks guys!
  11. Your GRE scores are great! Do you think if I need to take it again? It's my biggest concern right now as I'm running out of time! I have 158V 163Q and 5.5AW. And I'm targeting schools like Yale, Penn, Chicago, and Duke.
  12. I'm in modern Chinese history. Currently doing my last year of MA in China, targeting schools: Yale, Penn, Chicago, Duke, etc. My current GRE score is 158V 163Q 5.5AW. Do you guys think if I need to take it again? Thanks guys!
  13. Hey I'm planning to do PhD in Chinese history, targeting some top schools as well. It's been a year, did you get in? Any ideas in regard to the GRE requirement? I have 158 on verbal, 163 on math, 5.5 on essay. Do you think if it's enough? I'm out of time to do it again.
