  1. Am I too late for the Yale party?
  2. UT Austin has formalized their short list and are in the process of inviting students for the visiting weekend. I was told that final decisions would not be completed until the first week of March.
  3. I would not put too much stalk in one or two reported results. The number of stories I've heard from people in regards to fake or otherwise misinformed posts, in combination with my own experience last year, makes me skeptical. At best, the results forum gives you an idea of what is happening but should not be taken as fact unless you see a sufficient number of consecutive posts. Keep those fingers crossed!
  4. Congrats to the people who got into Northwestern! It looks like a really good program!
  5. That's probably the number that applied to all programs in the School of Arts and Sciences. That would be crazy for one department.
  6. I have an Apple Watch so that the rejections can go right from the school to my wrist, reducing the time I would have spent not crying.....
  7. To the person who calculated the cost per word of the Berkeley rejection letter--I salute you.
  8. I would expect that same advice that @ashiepoo72 gave a few pages back still holds true. I wouldn't freak out yet. 1) Love your avatar. 2) Honestly I would prepare for the worst just in case. Better safe than sorry.
  9. I'm assuming that you guys are talking about UT Austin. Although I am in a different department currently, I have spent a lot of time with professors in the History department and would be glad to answer any questions about campus life or my impressions of the department. Just PM me!
  10. Ok thanks guys! I'll hold off on it, it was probably just nerves taking over anyway!
  11. Yeah, the Penn postings freaked me out lol. I've already spoken to my POI there back in November, but I didn't get an interview request and have been freaking out about it for most of the day! I have been thinking about offering to send some of the departments I applied to a copy of my Yale book review. My problem is that I'm coming from an outside department and my writing sample, though hopefully pretty good, is from that discipline. My book review also-I hope- is pretty good and it is actually on a book from my historical field, so I feel that it may be beneficial to offer to include it. I'm not 100% though as this line of thinking may be out of pure desperation!
  12. I'm not sure if fun is the best word to describe this....
  13. Congrats! I'm Early Modern Europe so hopefully those interview requests haven't gone out yet! I have the same secondary geographical focus as you do! As far as the interview prep goes, I would look at some of the posts in the general forums like here: Best of luck to you! Hopefully we'll both see each other at Yale!
  14. I saw that! I was wondering what their focus is, as each field handles their own applications.
  15. I believe that it is a requirement for every program in the School of Arts and Sciences, but I'm not 100% sure this policy is still in effect. http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2012/01/11/grad-school-divided-over-interviews/
  16. econstudent06, The biggest indicator of acceptance in a masters program in the US is going to be math. To succeed in a program you are going to need to have at least multivariable calculus (in a math department, not through math econ) and some experience in matrix/linear algebra. That is the bare minimum. Also, you should keep in mind that a terminal masters degrees in econ is still a relatively new concept, as most students in the US just go straight to Ph.D. You may want to look at an empirical masters degree.
  17. I'm sure there are other schools we can both freak out over!
  18. Yale usually sends out interview requests this week. Anyone else feeling nervous?

    Program Fit

Coming from an outside discipline, I can tell you that GRE scores do matter for certain programs. GRE Quant scores are a huge indicator in Economics and are used to disqualify applications in the first round only. Talking with professors at UT Austin I've learned that for History GRE scores are used exactly how ashiepoo said they are.
  20. I don't live in Boston but I've judged the Harvard Debate Tournament a few times and we always went to Mr. Bartley's. It's a really good burger place.
  21. Last year I set my iPhone to vibrate the start of Beethoven's 5th symphony every time I got an email! I also remember that I had the grad cafe results page bookmarked on my computer. I'm resisting the urge to freak out until later this month though.
  22. Masters programs in Economics are a relatively new concept, as most just go straight to Ph.D. The masters programs that do exist mainly focus on giving students a general handle on the theory, not specializing in certain aspects of research. That being said, you may want to check applied econ masters programs if you are really interested though keep in mind that if you decide to go the Ph.D route, an applied econ masters doesn't look as good as a general masters degree in economics.
  23. In my experience (which is on the Econ side) adcoms are usually ok with letters that are a little late as they don't start looking at applications until January. I'm not sure how it is for History though, but if it helps I am in the same boat!
  24. I'm in the same position. Two are in another state so I can't go pester them.
