Hey everyone,
I was wondering if you have any idea as to how successful I'll be in applying for top American/Canadian PhD programs with the following (quite a funny mixture): mediocre transcript and GRE scores, BUT coming from a top school, a strong personal statement, very strong writing sample and reference letters, and a history of 2 serious publications as well as a serious conference presentation.

Nope. It's not important at all. I got into a Leiter top-10 place and got waitlisted at other two Leiter top-10 places with quite poor GRE

it will depend if you're a phd or masters student.
If phd, then so long as you don't leave your assignment, you can renew for 5 years (even if it is in subsidized off campus).
If masters, then you're SOL after the first year

The Facebook group for applicants turned out to be very supportive, friendly, and entertaining, so we've decided to keep it going, but changed the name to Philosophy Graduate Entrants 2016. The idea is that as we go through the no doubt challenging years of our PhDs we'll have a group of friends at different departments going through the same things, and it's great to have a friendly network of students at just about every department you can think of. Just accepted an offer from Michigan Ann-Arbor. Declined Cornell wait list and UC-Boulder (fellowship). Really happy (and still a little shocked) to be in at Michigan, but declining Boulder was kind of crushing: everyone there has been so kind and helpful and it seemed like a great program, too.

This happened to me... I politely said I was very interested but I'd have to wait until the end of the day on April 15th. I got a real offer (as opposed to the cart before the horse kind) from that school the next day regardless, which I sat on until a different, preferred school came through. The APA rules say that they can't make you respond before then, stand up for yourself! You can't be bullied into accepting an offer earlier in order to make that offer come about. If they want you, they should give you an offer and wait for your response like everyone else.

Declining Cornell and will decline Stanford tomorrow once the system is set up for me. I cried a little…super hard decision for me. But I'm excited to be at Columbia!

Got a, "We're gonna offer you a slot if you're in a position to accept our offer" type email from Fordham yesterday. I don't even want to open that can of worms, so I'm declining it outright. Nothing against Fordham, but it's crunch time and I'm really drained. I just want to devote my time to Trump memes now. Today, declining Stony Brook, even though I loved them.

Today I declined my offer of admission at Johns Hopkins... I found it emotionally draining, as I've really enjoyed my visit there and their community, and I've been treated really kindly by them during the whole process. So, whoever ends up at JHU - it's s wonderful and supportive place, and you're choosing well!! Good luck to everyone wait-listed by JHU.
