@TimTheEnchanter Thank you for your long message! St. Antony's indeed sounds amazing and offers so many additional possibilities for my field of study. Do you happen to remember if you/others were informed about getting a scholarship when you were told about your college placement or if this came later?

I'm actually a EU (Western Europe)-US citizen, so I guess I might have better chances for a scholarship given your anecdote.

The college placement information came so much quicker than expected, so I'm hoping that I'll hear about any scholarships from Oxford before mid-April, when I have to accept/reject my other offers.

Do you agree that living costs are as high as 1.200 pounds/month? This seems very high in my opinion...

My scholarship definitely came later, like a couple months later. That sad, I'd assume each funding body (I.e. the Clarendon, HEFCE, college specific funds, department specific funds, etc) may have different dates.

As for living costs, as I remember it my funding was about 13k for living expenses, and I lived in some of pricier St Ant's accommodations (Founder's) for 10 months (technically I was in another building for the summer though). On the day I left and closed my bank account, I had exactly 82p left in there, which means I spent pretty much 1300 pm. But I did buy a laptop with that money and I wasn't scrimping or saving. So you could do it for less, if you live in some of the smaller rooms, or live off campus farther from town and bike to campus for example.

I got into St. Antony's. I know that they have several separate scholarships that students in my MPhil course can apply to, but I thought I understood that Oxford also offered other scholarships. How common is it to get funding/how high is it on average (for a non-UK citizen)?

I went to St Antony's and I had an absolute blast. It was a fantastic college that only accepts grads from social science (and a few humanities, maybe) programs, so you're amongst like minded people. The one downside is that as a newer college, it doesn't have the endowment some of the others have and is short on cash for many things.

I have to say I'm not sure how common funding is for non UK/EU citizens since I am an EU citizen. Based on official stats, roughly 1/5th of incoming graduate students are offered some sort of funding, but I don't know what the distribution is based on country of origin. I can tell you completely anecdotally that during my time at St Ants, the vast majority of US/CA/AUS students were self-funded (unless they had a Marshall, Rhodes or Clarendon), students from developing countries were overwhelmingly on scholarship, and UK/EU students were maybe about half and half. But, again, that's just anecdotal.

@polyphoria I received my college placement today (fairly early, I thought it would take a lot longer), but without any information concerning scholarships/funding. Do you know if we'll be informed separately of any money sources, or if I didn't get any as nothing was mentioned in either of my offers?

What college did you get into? I did an MSc at Ox in 2014-15 and didn't get funded until June.

  4. Did not receive the scholarship, but my reviews were fairly encouraging, and were specific on what I can improve.  I will definitely apply again next year, and I'll actually be enrolled in a program and can get help from professors then. The odds are astronomically low anyway.

    And congrats Alma! That's amazing!

  5. I almost mentioned the Boulder one. There's a whole Critical Media Practice PhD with Stephanie Spray and many others, including Christian Hammonds who's got a half appointment Comm/half Anthro.

And Shannon Mattern is at the New School. More media than visual anthro, but she's at the top of the game.

    • Duke has the Center for Documentary Studies, and Ralph Litzinger works on media
    • UC Davis also has Tarek Elhaik
    • Chicago - Julie Chu (another NYU alum)
    • Berkeley - Karen Nakamura
    • U Washington used to have Danny Hoffman, who's now based in the African Studies department there

And this has been very US-focused but Sarah Pink is at Monash in Australia

Also Davis did accept funded students for 2020, in case anyone was wondering.

hey folks! anyone hear from McGill yet? looks like interviews and offers were out by this time last cycle but I don't see anything on the results page.

also, question about u of t's process. I got my acceptance email at like 11:53pm on a Tuesday in Jan. and it said my letter of offer would be sent the following week. It hasn't come yet and the GPA confirmed that the offer specifics (ie. funding) are still being processed and will come by the 19th (still unclear if online or in post). But... I've never heard of a program that sends acceptances before offers, so I'm curious as to why. Anyone have insight on this?

I can't speak to UofT specifically, but I've found that it's relatively common. The department decides who to admit, and sends their list up to the Graduate School, who then issues the formal offers. But that can take a few weeks and POIs or Dept. directors/adcomms often send an email to informally inform you they've accepted you and possibly invite you to the admitted students' day/weekend.

Same. Mine ended up being 1200 words. I originally felt like Chicago was a stretch for me so I didn't feel like it was even worth extending because I know there's no chance. Are they doing interviews right now? I didn't see a lot for Chicago Anthropology on the results page.

There are a few results suggesting they held interviews on the 29th/31st.

To be honest I applied because I felt like I had to but I didn't really want to go there. It's a scary place.

did they tell you why or normally they dont do.

Looking at results from previous years on here it doesn't look like IU usually does interviews

I was just accepted to IUB without an interview

Formal notification or email from POI? I've heard nothing from them and I'm wondering whether I should assume it's a wash.

Why news from UC Santa Cruz ?

UCSC did interviews in January and said their decisions would come early or mid Feb.

Did anyone here apply to University of Chicago? How did you handle the 2500 word limit for the SOP when literally every other school asked for approximately 1200 words or less? Did you submit your 1000 word statements or did you lengthen it to meet 2000 words?

I added a bit to mine so that it was 1300-ish, using a few things from the schools that had asked for a separate personal statement. But I didn't get an interview with them so that doesn't mean much.

  10. I live in Denver and I've never been to Greeley, but I can tell you it has a reputation as being kind of a Hicksville. Apparently it's a meat factory town that literally smells bad, but the COL is significantly better than in the rest of the Front Range.

  11. I'm European, but did my undergrad in the US and my masters in the UK (top ranked uni, and I also got accepted to the only other school I applied to).

A CV is just Britspeak for a resume. This isn't different than what you would submit as a resume for a US grad school. Include relevant work experience, your degree, GPA, maybe standardized scores (I don't think it would be necessary. Mine certainly weren't a part of my application), extracurriculars, and relevant coursework or research projects (that was relevant in my case since I had a very generic undergraduate degree). Where you put studying abroad is kind of up to you, it won't matter. Either put it as a sub category under your undergrad degree or list it separately, specifying that it's study abroad. That counts as formatting and they won't care.Let me know if you have any other questions.
