  1. I was simply being a bit cheeky - no need to call me ignorant (or resort to name-calling at all). I would never email such a thing to a professional. Let us not forget, however, that many of us have taken on rather substantial loans and as such, cannot necessarily afford to attend conferences that they may potentially benefit from. As a (recent) independent scholar, there is usually not much available in terms of aid. Regardless, my comment may have been insensitive, to which I apologize for. I fully acknowledge the plight of internationals, and wholly support any and all systems in place that may aid them.
  2. Unfortunately, I just finished my Masters a few months back, so no go @ institutional funding. I guess I'll have to inquire with the organizing committee as to options geared towards the impoverished international. Not every American is rolling in the dough !
  3. Haven't heard anything from schools, but I was accepted to a pretty cool conference overseas - which means, I need to get back in the groove of writing and I need to figure out how to search for travel grants! Has anyone had any luck with financial aid for international conferences (or monies from national, state, or private endowments)?
  4. I went last year (PCA) and the Midwest version in 2013. IMO they're cool conferences, but I find myself more interested in less general ones. Fandom and TV studies seem very very prevalent in this sphere, and both of those things are not on my radar.
  5. Nothing yet. I wouldn't get nervous. It seem that some (many?) programs won't deliberate or dole out their decisions until the end of this month, next month, or even later. Who knows... the damn time frame is so open its enough to drive one crazy!
  6. I've TA'd for intro film classes (world cinema, documentary, film analysis [online TA]) and have created and taught three film electives -- two of which were online courses, one was taught during the semester in a traditional classroom setting. Safe to say I have a decent amount of experience -- learning how to construct a syllabus is pretty invaluable.
  7. In addition to awaiting responses for PhD applications I've submitted a number of articles to journals, 2/3 of which will let me know their deliberation around the same time as schools. Yeah... no stress.......tho
  8. I applied to Michigan, UCB, UCSB, Georgia State, Yale in addition to Northwestern, Pitt, and UTA. 8 total. I think I would be happy at either of these schools because the research I want to do can be done at most any strong film / media studies program. Nearly all film programs these days have faculty heavily invested in the role technology plays in our social and political lives (including cinema), and this seems to be where my work is directing me. As with all of this, though, it really depends on your fit and the type of work that is being produced at said institution.
  9. man this thread is dead!!! where are all the PhD film folks?
  10. If your application(s) are submitted.. I wouldn't spend any more time than you have to reading, editing, re-reading, etc. It will just give you more anxiety.
  11. I made it a point to submit applications early because I knew there would be hiccups, miscommunications, procrastination on part of Letter writers. I was right.. on all accounts. My apps may not be perfect but they are submitted and finalized. It has been a hellish 2-3 months...
  12. Oh I totally understand the busy life, which is why I hate to bother them. It's conflicting. Part of the stress comes from 2 prof's general lack of response / communication. One of them posts on Facebook all day, yet doesn't read his emails and can't set aside 10 minutes to submit his letter to 2 programs....
  13. Oh, and all but 1 of my 8 applications have been submitted. The remaining one stipulates that all letters of rec be attached to the app before submission.
  14. What's stressing me out is the waiting game. Not the acceptance waiting game, but the waiting game to see if schools received all of my application and supplemental materials (transcripts, test scores, letters of rec). My professors who wrote letters for me can be flaky-- they're making me use Interfolio to send out their letters, and one of the guys still hasn't written his yet! It's driving me nuts. Not to mention that each school has different requirements, so keeping on top of that is rather stressful... At this point I've done about all I can though. All I can do is keep checking to see if schools get all the required materials and that my prof's are also on top of their obligations.
  15. Ah I see. My specialization is film / media studies (history and theory) rather than communication, rhetoric, or philosophy.
