  1. Only briefly about their research interests. And, I'm not sure... do you care to elaborate? This seems like a leading question.
  2. I took the GRE yesterday. I don't think I scored very high, so I'm hoping the programs I'm looking into don't heavily weigh the scores. I also sent out 3 applications today: northwestern georgia state university u. of pittsburgh my U. of Texas @ Austin app was sent out a few weeks ago, but for all of the above I'm still waiting on GRE scores and letters of recommendation for the applications to be considered complete. I'm hoping to send out the remaining 4 applications this weekend. There's a bit more paperwork I have to do before I'm ready for that. Ugh stress!
  3. Scrap that... I found the site. Different question: Should I wait until my scores appear on the "My GRE" page to order / request remaining scores be sent out, or should I do this now (asap). I'm getting a bit antsy because deadlines for apps are floating around early to mid December.
  4. So I just took the GRE today and reported my scores to half of my schools. I still need to send out scores to my four remaining schools. I went to this web page: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores/send/asr ...and for some reason I cannot click through to the link that allows me to order additional scores! Has anyone else had this problem, or is it just me? How have you guys reported your remaining test scores? Is there another website I should visit?
  5. I've had one POI response that was very enthusiastic, one that was more informative yet still rather enthusiastic, and one that was snarky and clearly a response written out of disdain or pure confusion. Yeah... uncomfortable. A number more never responded back, but I know it is expected. I'm looking at a number of film / media programs for PhD, about 7-8 total. UTA Yale Michigan Pittsburgh GSU Northwestern UCB UCSB I have yet to take the GRE (I'm still studying up, planning to take it the first week of November), and am definitely stressing out about it because I'm struggling with math review. Most of the applications are filled in, except for SOP / CV / writing sample(s), which will continue to be fine tuned until submission. One setback that I am anticipating is that my letter writers are submitting their letters via Interfolio... and I assume that some (maybe many) programs will not accept such a service. Other than that, this process is most definitely stressful, so keeping a level head is tough at times.
  6. I just sent a bunch more POI emails, hopefully I didn't come off too over-zealous (I'm definitely excited to research faculty and my fit).
  7. ah, I have sent a few "feeler" emails to introduce myself, but for the most part communication has been enacted on my part for clarifications on the program / requirements / applications / and possibility of waiving the application fee.
  8. Yeah, I hear you. I'm aiming to take the GRE the first week of November, but I'm struggling with the math section pretty badly... hopefully programs barely look at that score. I also need to start practicing more vocab, etc. In my opinion using a template for your SOP may be a smart move; it certainly saves time. Obviously tailor each SOP to the school / program / faculty, but much of what you're saying anyway is the same, so as long as the narrative is coherent and concise you have nothing to worry about. For my writing sample I'm using a thesis chapter that I rather substantially revised to be a standalone article (I submitted it to a journal recently and am hoping it will be accepted.) I'm in the same boat with letter writers. I think two out of three of them are making me use Interfolio, which may be more of a hassle for me to keep up with (since some institutions won't allow such a dossier service). My prof's can be flakey so that will be a pain to stay on top of them. What's POis?
  9. So how is progress on applications? I have begun to fill in information on some parts of the applications, but I'm leaving myself time to fine tune (if necessary) my writing sample, personal essay / statement of purpose, and CV. It's really tough to keep track of everything.. this time around I'm applying to 8 schools whereas with both grad and undergrad I only applied to 2 schools each. It's crazy!! Between all of the materials, particulars of the program (that the applications quiz you on), mailed vs. scanned transcripts, apps which permit services like Interfolio for letters of rec. submissions vs those which don't, Eesh. Not to mention I'm also trying to find out as much as I can about fee waivers since I'm pretty broke at the moment. Oh yeah, cherry on top, the dark cloud that is the GRE looming over me! I'm shooting to take the test the first week of November, which means I have to really get in gear, finish the Princeton prep book, and start taking practice exams.
  10. Good to know. I'll get on the profiles next week. Thanks !
  11. Hi folks, I'm currently preparing for the GRE, aiming to take it either late October or early November. PhD app deadlines are early / mid December, so that will give me (and ETS) a month to distribute test scores to the institutions. Should I start online applications before the GRE? I have been gathering materials for a little while now: my writing sample is revised, my personal essays are almost complete, my recommenders have been notified of their obligation, I am looking into fee waivers, etc. It seems like the final obstacle is the GRE. Since I plan to take the test in late October / early November, should I wait to begin filling out applications until then... or should I get a headstart? Does it matter if GRE scores are sent weeks after an application has been submitted? Can you even submit your application without GRE scores? Sorry for the bombardment of questions!!
  12. Ah no date yet. Likely mid to late October. I just started reading through a practice book so that'll keep me busy in addition to gathering all the app materials, etc. I wish that if you have written a thesis and or have a masters degree you wouldn't have to take the test, but oh well! It's not the end of the world.
