  1. Even if you haven't done any research yet, if you can come up with a good idea for a research project with your advisor this fall, that's really all you need for a 1st year grad app, I think. A well thought out idea, plan, and literature review. They're not looking for results from you yet, except under maybe the previous research essay, but that will be mostly undergrad stuff anyway.

I didn't have any professors read mine either year I applied. I'm not a good example to follow in that regard =P

  2. I wouldn't say I'm all that close with my advisor, but people DO have relationships in grad school and it's not that advisors don't know that. I even told my advisor that I was worried about whether or not my SO at the time would get into my school for his PhD. Some grad students are married or have kids and have to work around those commitments as well. As long as you establish that "hey, I can do work while I'm not in town if necessary", I think it would be good to give your advisor a heads up that you do plan to maintain your relationship at that level. If he has a problem with it, it's good to know now rather than later. As my dad puts it, your advisor should treat you as a junior colleague, and I like to think that colleagues can talk about their situations in at least that level of detail.

  3. Quick Q: When you accept, does it make you declare whether you're going tenure or reserve for the first year right then?

EDIT: Never mind, missed the little "available after acceptance" line.

  4. Duke Chronicle's housing guide last summer might be helpful to familiarizing people with housing in Durham and around Duke.

    http://issuu.com/duk...00701_housing/1

(many other issues of the Chronicle there as well)

additionally, the Robertson bus (any UNC/Duke affiliate can ride free) goes to and from UNC's Morehead Planetarium to the front of Duke Chapel every half hr. throughout the day August-April ( http://www.robertson...tatic&source=68 )

and the Bull city express (http://parking.duke....us_sched/c5.php) nicely runs from Duke Med center to areas down town and back.

These are in addition to regular campus buses.

thought I'd add a new link, for Duke housing, at least... http://chroniclehousing.com/

  5. No NDSEG for me either... and that is my last year I can apply (I think). I swear, if it is my undergrad grades still screwing me, that is quite ridiculous since I had 4 semesters of graduate grades to hand them to outweigh them. The only other thing is if my statement wasn't good enough. Ah well, at least my fiancée will have a job here shortly so I won't be poor. Time to be a kept man for the next 3 years. B)

I'm gonna stand by them not liking that I didn't include any "contact info" in my short answers as the reason xD

  6. Finally got the rejection. Congrats to the winners!

    Yes, congratulations again!

Man, I was hoping I'd get to the next forum ranking in this thread at least...

Now: a further question is whether or not they have a waitlist group. If anyone DOESN'T hear, let us know!

    Has anyone gotten accepted from:

    Civil?

Maybe our sample size is too small...but I feel like there is some significant award notifications missing. But if there were ~3000 applicants and we have about 158 applicants here on the forum, then yah, not a big enough sample size to tell anything from this if there are only 200 awards

Would +1 you but I'm all out. Good point on the categories missing...

  8. Maybe they have an automated program sending out the rejections well into the evening so that they don't get a deluge of emails/calls about them during working hours?

That would have been smart of them like, last Friday, but if that's their plan now, they probably got more calls today about notifications than they would have if they'd just sent the darn things...

  9. I think we are waiting on rejections :-/

Assuming a 10 percent acceptance rate, we would expect with the 100 or so users on this thread to see 10 awards. Aren't we pretty close to that? Obviously an incredibly rough estimate, but I'm thinking there aren't too many more (if any) awards going out today.

That's what I'm thinking - anyone got an official count? We have had as many as 180 in here today, though.

  10. Fair enough. All I know is that I had a dream last night that I woke up this morning and had an email saying I got it. Then I woke up for real this morning and was quite disappointed.

I had a nightmare that I couldn't adapt the last proposal I wrote to the current proposal I'm writing. Then I woke up and realized it was true. xD Will be very glad for some resolution on NDSEG, either way, such that I can move on with my life...
