  1. Statistics doesn't seem to be a popularity contest to me, I'd have to say the GRFP is more of a popularity contest. You sell yourself with well written proposals and promises and proof of broader impacts. The only way in which it isn't a popularity contest is that the minority card reigns supreme. If the NDSEG really does weigh heavily on (graduate?) GPA and GRE scores, then I probably have little chance. And in my biased view, I find those two things unrepresentative of the ability to succeed and develop as a scientist anyways.

I'd rather have the NDSEG, as it more closely aligns with my long term career plans, but I will most definitely not be upset if I don't get it. I'll just accept the GRFP.

    Good luck tomorrow everyone!

I WISH I'd been able to send my grad GPA/transcript in, but it was due before the end of my first semester. I'm with you on the NDSEG front - my research and career goals match closely around the DOD.

  2. that is what she hinted at.....i figure if they have the list they can tell you over the phone.

oh snap! let us know if she calls you back (or do you have to call HER back?)!

  3. got the answering machine....they said " for panel evaluations please call 301-965-5167" that number just rings. called ndseg back and got a person. she said they expect to send out all award notifications tomorrow, however they have not recieved the list from the dod yet (and could be as late as early next week). she said, however they do expect the list soon and can call back as early as later today.....

Call back as in release notifications??

  4. If you disable rich text editing in your user preferences on this site then you'll be to post. This is a known issue which I hope they will fix in the next release.

    Thank you!

  5. As a bonus, you get $1000/yr towards health care, which the GRFP does not give.

Oh, I didn't even realize that! My university requires health insurance through them (yay Massachusetts ): ) Another major plus.

  6. I was told this as well but by the department administrator. Luckily, a professor had already offered me a full RA so this was not a problem. But shouldn't my advisor not be required to pay for the remaining tuition that GRFP doesn't cover?

See, that's what I wasn't sure about - I'm pretty sure now that the SCHOOL has to cover it and not the professor, but I am not 100% positive (and neither does my advisor seem to be).

@nichol9 Haha, was waiting for that =P IF I get both (again, not likely, I'm not a superstar grad student), I'll probably end up with the NSF depending on whether or not I can defer my second year of funding from my school. If I can't, I'll take NSF because I can put NSF on reserve for a year. If I can, I'd probably go with NDSEG.

  7. If you've already been awarded NSF GRFP, then you don't have to worry about tuition, even it is more than the 10,500 cost of education from GRFP. This is from the NSF program solicitation website http://www.nsf.gov/p...93/nsf08593.htm :

"The cost of education allowance currently is $10,500 per tenure year and is to be used by the affiliated institution to cover the costs of educating the Fellow. The affiliated institution is responsible for tuition and required fees in excess of the cost of education allowance."

I totally agree that it would be an honor to win both, but it really is hard to compare them based on the stipend alone. Sure the NDSEG stipend is greater by a couple thousand dollars. But as an NSF fellow, you can apply for additional funded opportunities in both industry and research abroad. Congrats on winning the NSF GRFP!

And good luck to everyone waiting on NDSEG.:)

    Thank you!

Yeah, I had a professor tell me (falsely, I only recently realized) that if you got only a cost-of-tuition scholarship that you still had to work as an RA to make up the difference. Didn't affect me so much as it affected my ex, who almost turned down the NSF on this information (long story involving the loss of his advisor) until he learned that he wouldn't need to be an RA (and informed me as such as well). If I somehow managed to get the NDSEG, it would indeed be a tossup between the two, but given my field of research/career path, it may make more philosophical sense to go with an NDSEG. However, not getting my hopes up (:

  8. I did get the GRFP, but I am still hoping to get NDSEG - not only is it still an honor to be awarded both (even if you can only accept one), the NDSEG is full tuition and a higher stipend.

  9. Yeah, GradCafe doesn't work for me either on my iPad (but it's the only forum that behaves as such for me)

If you tap on the pdf icon on JSTOR or another site, I would expect it to open in pdf format in safari and give you an "Open in GoodReader" button in the top right hand corner...at least that's how pdfs open for me out of email attachments - I'd have to try one of those sites to be sure.. You can also start from GR and do the "Web browse" and navigate to the articles from there. Often, I do my article "finding" on a real computer, download it into Dropbox, and file it away in GoodReader from there. Dropbox is an awesome tool for the iPad.

I think the biggest thing to remember about the iPad is that it is an entirely different style of computing - there's no cursor, no ability to drag things around, nothing like a "real computer". But, that in and of itself is not a bad thing. It becomes a device, one that is less prone to normal computer errors and hangs, something which I appreciate as compared to my "real" computer. You'll find a good rhythm with it.

  10. You can write grfp@nsf.gov and have them reverse your tenure decision. You have to declare tenure by May 1st though so you would want to reverse well before that to allow yourself time to declare again. I was told you can no longer take a reserve year for your first year on NSF though.

No way! D: Are you serious? Who told you, NSF?

  11. I was under the impression that the contact information was there for the review board to see the number of *.gov and *.mil e-mail addresses, phone numbers in the 202 area code, etc. that there are on your application...

    LOOOOOOOL.

  12. I am applying straight from undergrad, anyone else?

Is this scholarship more for those who have already started research with their advisor, rather than those of us matriculating to a grad program in F2011?

I can't find whether the awarding process for this scholarship, like the NSF GRFP, is loosely based on demographics. Anyone have info on that?

I don't know about demographics, but I know this, as compared to the NSF, is much more highly based on how well your research topic meshes with one of the military or DOD research lab interests.

  13. Cool, that's a critical function for me - I often consult 20+ sources for a paper, and I like to consolidate all the useful information into a single document before I decide what I'll actually work with.

I think there is an iPad in my near future . . .many thanks!

You'll love keeping your personal and technical library in a single, slim device. (:

  14. I'm so glad I came across this thread . . . great information. One question - I was wondering how easy it is to copy/paste text from the .pdf into a separate document? I've resisted experimenting with the iPad because I'm afraid I might just buy it without really having a use for it, so I don't know my way around one at all . . . this makes it sound worth the investment, though.

*pulls one up* In GoodReader, very easy, if the pdf is one that is normally highlightable on your normal computer (scans sometimes aren't).

  15. Maybe if you're continuing a project on from your undergraduate to graduate programs, you could have preliminary results before you start grad school... But I don't think that's the norm.

Poll: Do most people who apply as seniors write proposals based on the work they did undergrad? I definitely didn't, but that's not why I didn't get it last year (ie: wasn't one of their critiques).

  16. You don't realize how annoying reading stapled together packets of paper is until you get to read them on an iPad instead! Books can still somewhat hold their own, but the iPad also hides how long a document is (thus hiding a great deal of the discouragement factor (; )

  17. I mean, at my school in general, I'd say publications are significantly less emphasized than accomplishing and building things, at least in engineering. As I've stated before, I'm very surprised I didn't get docked for my lack of journal papers as a first year grad student, and I doubt I'd have one before application season next year.

  18. I did. I left an awkward message. Normally there is no way in hell I would do something like that, because it's awkward/rudeish. But I guess I was just reallllly stupidly excited. :(

ACK! It's like I'm going crazy all over again!!! It was probably a wrong number....

You never know, someone could already have a federal fellowship and had to decline!

I said half because I would totally do it - what are they going to do? "Oh, you called me back awkwardly, we're not going to give it to you after all." (: I'm sure they totally understand either way.
