  1. @littlenova // Congratulations! What a birthday gift, eh? I was told by the associate director during my interview that MICA GD department offers an Mac equipped studio space for each student accepted to their department and that they are more generous thus more competitive than Yale and RISD in terms of funding and they make sure every student is included in the benefit. Because GD department is becoming more well-known, they are expanding department space and student body as well this year. MICA is really running better programs each year. @chickenpotpi // I did my RISD GD interview on Monday. As far as I know, they're conducting interviews with applicants the whole week.
  2. I think you're visiting RISD for an in-person interview, right? The interviewers are very nice people. The whole process wasn't specifically grilling. In my case, they did more talking than I did. I suggest that you give a thought on the connection between what you did or studied before and graphic design, and just relax! Bethany Jones, the graduate coordinator will lead the interview along with 2 other teachers most likely. I've just decided not to visit Yale for the interview. I certainly hope it won't affect my chance. Good luck to you with your interviews! Have you sent your pieces to Yale already?
  3. Holy s**t! A BIG congratulations!!! I guess now it doesn't matter what NYU's decision is because you've got MIT! I'm happy for you!
  4. Phew~~~just finished my interview with RISD GD MFA faculty about an hour ago (where I am, it's mid-night!). The vibes were warm and positive! It was also more like a chat than a formal interview. I applied to the 3 year program but they seems to think that I do not need an extra year. I should have asked them if it's possible that they consider me for the 2 year program. It'll be such huge burden off the shoulder in terms of finance and time. 5. Thank you for sharing your experience in detail! Good to know what other fellow contestants are made of (steel from what you described). I also hear that the program regularly admits some limited number of applicants from every country represented by the applicants so as to keep the student body as diverse and international as possible. I'm 26, entering late 20s, too. My background is quite messy. I did my under in B school. Now I'm freelancing in both translation and graphic design. I'm not so sure if that works toward my advantage. The decision hasn't been made so don't drop your hope just yet! I applied this year expecting to get rejections after rejections, but so far everything's going pretty well for me. You just never know!
  6. @grad_wannabe / I just realized I replied to the wrong post. Ha! My last post was meant to answer ur question but somehow I made a mistake! Silly me
  7. Nope, not a word from NYU ITP. I haven't even got an interview! I'm getting ZERO ZILCH NULL NADA traffic from NYC. Good luck! What was the group interview like? I wish I could be there. Never been to the States.
  8. Mine is next week. I'm doing a phone interview 'cause I'm an international applicant. Is it more like a chat or more a formal interview where they grill you? Thank you!
  9. I think those two people must be Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Cole Phillips. Did you do an in-person interview or a phone interview? Looks like you really want to get in VCU. Good luck on your application!
  10. I wrote back to ask about my CCA admission status. The associate professor said that she thinks I'll be admitted and that I'm considered for scholarship! YEAH~
  11. @commandzhee / Wow~ That's really early for an interview! No, I didn't apply to VCU. I've just finished my video chat with Calarts. Having my fingers crossed! Good luck to you too! @sophiab / I received an email from CCA, saying they want to do a phone interview. Though the webadvisor suggests I'm accepted, I guess I haven't really nailed it yet.
  12. Did you apply to MICA GD MFA? As far as I know, MICA GD MFA only conduct interviews in March. Mine is next week.
  13. Busted! Thank you. That's really nice of you to say that. I'm actually quite shy and unconfident showing my work to ppl.
  14. @sophiab / Thanks for doing the double check. Congratulations! And best of luck to everyone waiting to hear from CCA.
  15. No, not even a word. My status still shows "pending" on the website. How and when did you hear? Good luck!
  16. Congrats, sophiab and kewpies! We'll find out together soon (I hope)! But are they really disorganized with their letters as sophiab said? They don't strike me like that.
  17. Hi guys! Do you think a skype interview is less advantageous than an in-person interview? I live outside of the States so I have to schedule distance interviews with most school. Can anyone who's done distance interview share some thoughts?
  18. I noticed the same thing when I logged on today! So it's true, right?
  19. RISD GD MFA program has sent out e-mail notification for interviews. Gook luck to every one applying to the program!
  20. Woke up by DHL person who sent me my SAIC packet this morning, and checked e-mail box (first thing in the morning! ALWAYS!), a notification from MICA is there. Calarts also wrote to confirm a Skype interview. Three dates are available TODAY! Tomorrow, and next Tuesday. Of course, I went for the last date. Good luck, everyone! Keep your hopes alive and high! We have to nail it! Admission SAIC - MFA Studio Visual Communications (accepted without interview) Interviews (MFA GD) Yale (3/29) Calarts (3/2) MICA (3/5 or 3/12) - e-mail dated 2/25 Pending RISD CCA Pratt Boston UIC NYU ITP
  21. Yes, I'm an international student. They haven't mentioned anything about funding but they told me an admission packet is in delivery. Hopefully, funding information is included in it. Good luck to you on your applications!
  22. I just got admitted to SAIC via E-mail notification!!! So excited!!! Admission SAIC - MFA Studio Visual Communications Interviews Yale (3/29) Calarts (3/4) Pending RISD CCA Pratt Boston UIC NYU ITP
  23. @Betty / A guy from MICA Mount Royal told me they didn't conduct interviews until recent years. So I guess things could be different at Graphic design department too. You never know! The waiting's killing me too. Good luck! @RKSim / A BIG congrats! It's still very early for MFA admissions decisions to be made. You must be VERY impressive!

    interviews

First of all, thanks for sharing these great interview questions.I applied for MFA in Graphic Design/Visual Communications. I come from a non art/design background. Graduated form business school and worked briefly in advertising/marketing but still couldn't adjust myself to the world where $$$ matters more than anything (though we often pretend otherwise). Interviews Yale (3/29) <= having hard time registering the idea of being in the final for several days. no email sent. I logged on my page and it's there. I applied for 3yr program but they bumped me up to 2yr program without my consent and knowing. Calarts (3/4) <= received email notification on 2/13, Chinese New Year's Eve. I am VERY surprised and flattered (and now worried) that Yale decided to let me compete with the 2yr program applicants because I honestly don't think my portfolio is that strong. It hasn't been a long time since I decided to make a career path change to design at the age of 26. I don't think I'll be able to make it to Calarts in time for the event. It's New Year's holidays now and visa office won't open until next monday. Plus, where should I live between the interviews? They're alomost a month apart! For now, I think I'll do a skype interview with Calarts and fly in for an in-person interview for Yale. It sounds crazy, flying in from Asia for just an interview, I know. The admissions office lady says they totally understand if I can't be there, and that they do skype interview with international applicants every year and it works very well. I wanna go because it's Yale. I never dreamed of the possibility of being associated with the name my entire life! What do you guys think? Should I stay or should I fly? Is a skype interview less advantageous than an on-site interview?
