  1. A specific POI has expressed their enthusiastic interest in me for months. While I have moderate interest in their lab, when I visited the university I met with other professors whose personalities fit a bit better with mine and are performing research that is exactly what I picture myself doing in my graduate studies. It's fantastic (and unexpected) that all of these labs are excited for me to join their teams, but I don't know how I should approach the situation with the POI is more enthusiastic about me than I am about them, especially since they were on the admissions committee and likely played a pivotal role in securing me a top fellowship. I've accepted the offer at the university, but still need to figure out where my home lab will be in the Fall. The university allows flexible lab rotations or direct matching. I would prefer to direct match and hit the ground running on a research project when I start this Fall, but do I owe this person a rotation in their lab? There's a small, but non-zero chance that I may actually like the work and culture in the lab more than I imagine. Or what's the most professional way to turn down a specific lab, but not a university?
  2. Two of the programs I applied to accepted me with funding (one of them with a generous fellowship offer, yay!) before interviews/visits, which is amazing and beyond what I had hoped for, but as recruitment events approach I feel my impostor syndrome going full throttle. My fear, which I know is irrational, is that they will meet me and realize they've made a mistake. I know I can't be the only one battling this. How do you all cope with these feelings? Tell me your favorite brain hacks to hold more gratitude and confidence, and move away from feeling like a fraud
  3. I'm trying to save up so I can move comfortably a month before the Fall semester starts. I'd like to explore my new town a good bit and maaaaybe even start working/training in a new lab
  4. Sounds like you're very well-prepared for grad studies academically. Make sure your grades trend upward and continue engaging in research. To up your chances for fellowships, I'd recommend engaging in a field-relevant outreach activity. Many fellowships love hearing about how you're going to change the world beyond the lab. Find an activity that you enjoy that's solid proof of your efficacy in engaging with diverse groups in the STEM community.
  5. Your research experience is great and you've applied to a range of schools. So long as your letters of rec are positive and your statement of purpose is solid, I think you'll be fine. Don't let the trolls get you down. Good luck!
  6. Anyone else waiting on UW M3D? I see some rejections and interviews on the results page from last week. Hoping my application didn't get buried or devoured by Krampus
  7. Congrats! Hope the invites keep coming, though this was my reach program!
  8. As long as your package was passed along, I don't think this will affect your admission decision at all. Admissions committee won't be counting words. Yours might feel a little longer than the rest, but they read sooo many that I doubt they'll even notice. Good luck!
