I can't help but think that someone out there is tinkering with the link just to get a good laugh watching us react with panic to each minor change. I hope not, but academia is a bit of a sadistic game! I hope this doesn't mean we have to wait another week. I need to know something, either way, so i can just move on with my life. I have a pint of ice cream on deck for solace or celebration. Works well both ways!

Just noticed a "review result" link appeared under my application. When I click on it, it says "Review results will be available one to two weeks after the review." Not sure if they are referring to the review that took place last week (and that some of us almost crashed - lol) or something else. Hope this means we will hear something soon!

Does anyone know what the deal is with NYU American Studies? I've already accepted an offer of admission elsewhere, so it's kind of a moot point for me but I'm still curious about why the status of my application never changed at NYU. It looks like some people have received notification already via email (both acceptances and rejections)? Is there anyone else that hasn't heard anything at all? It looks like a couple of people on the results board seem to be in the same predicament...

thanks @ibnbattuta - this does make me feel a bit better. I'm still fairly certain that I will not be accepted after that interview, but I find comforting in knowing im not the only one thats flubbed one. Interesting coincidence though - my disaster interview was also with UPENN!! Maybe they should re-think the whole skype interview process? I get the appeal for logistical purposes, but there's nothing like meeting in the flesh. Even a phone interview seems a lot better than an admissions panel staring you down over skype! In any case, I just wasn't prepared and I didn't represent myself or my research ideas well. I tried to save myself in a follow-up email...so hopefully that wasn't too little too late. I'm not going to give up hope entirely though. I'm just going to have very low expectations. I feel like that's the theme of this whole phd application process for me....low expectations. :-) Does anyone remember the old snl skit "lowered expectations"?....

hello all. Long time lurker here. So I got an interview invite to one of my top schools on Thursday night. The interview was scheduled for Friday afternoon, via skype, with the entire admissions committee of 5. Typically, I'm a pretty good interviewer. BUT THIS WAS A DISASTER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS! I totally bombed. I wasn't prepared for the questions they asked (though I should have been). I rambled, I was incoherent, I didn't directly address anything that they asked. They all looked confused. I literally wanted to cry about half way through. The worst part was that there was something wrong with the sound on their end, so I could barely hear them. I kept having to ask them to repeat what they said, and they seemed really annoyed! It seemed like there was a fan or something in their conference room that muffled the sound. I spent half the call trying to read their lips. i tested my skype right before the call and i could hear my friend on the test call perfectly! But even when I was finally able to figure out what they were saying, I STILL wasn't prepared to answer their questions! Oh, and they basically told me that my research project is ill conceived. I feel like a complete idiot and I just want to crawl under a rock and stay there for 15-20 years. There is a zero percent chance I am going to be admitted after that mess. Maybe this is the universe's way of telling me that this was not the right school for me, and I should go with the other offer that I have? Anyway, in keeping with this thread title ("wine, wait and whine") I am now chugging a bottle of wine at 11:30am (it's 5 o'clock somewhere right?!). :-/

@Pokeabun - you took the words right out of my mouth! I have one acceptance, with pretty good funding, so the waiting has become slightly more tolerable. But I'm ready to just say the hell with it and accept that offer and tell the rest to piss off. At least then i could stop holding my breath every time I get a new email!

@unfriendlyblackhottie - thats amazing! Congrats!!!!! Was the call from a 609 area code by any chance? I just had a random missed call from Mount Holly, NJ which is about 10 minutes from Philadelphia and they didnt leave a voicemail. It could have just been a random call, but ahhh im curious now!! I had kind of given up on UPenn even though id heard that the committee met this week and was reaching out to interviewees by the end of the week, my intuition was telling me that I wasn't a great fit and I should accept the Rutgers offer. Ahhhhh who calls and doesnt leave a VM? probably a telemarketer? hmph.

@td_ny - hey! i just assumed Brown had sent acceptances since they already did rejections (and it seemed like the majority of schools extended offers of admission before they sent out rejections), but actually looking at the results page there doesn't seem to be any confirmed Brown acceptances so I'm probably totally wrong!!! Congrats on getting an interview. I'm sure they will contact you soon!
-
@canadian_grad_93 - I haven't heard from York yet, but I heard that they dont get back to applicants until really late in the game (late March, or even April!). So if you haven't heard yet it's probably no reason to worry. I sure wish they'd speed things up a little bit this year, though!
-
@zoesing - yay!!!! @unfriendlyblackhottie - thanks for the update! Maybe this means UPenn hasn't offered interviews yet?! It looks like someone did an interview as late as 2/24 last year. Fingers crossed! Someone posted on the results page that the 4 finalists for NYU American Studies were contacted last week, so i've given up on NYU. Even if theres the potential to be waitlisted, I'm not terribly interested in the program so I'm not going to hold out for it.

Anyone heard from UPenn at all yet? It seems like all the big players in AFAM have already sent out acceptances (Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, Berkeley, Cornell, Brown, and UT). So I'm wondering if Penn has sent out invitations as well (with rejections forthcoming) and either the accepted individuals are not on this board...or they are committed lurkers. I have a good offer on the table in women's/gender studies and i want to accept/start making plans for next year, but it's difficult to do knowing that a decision is still looming! Ahhhh UPenn, what's the hold up?!!!
-
@unfriendlyblackhottie - UPenn and NYU definitely do interviews. Northwestern im not so sure about. There have been some rumors floating around on this forum that northwestern might do interviews, but their website just says that admitted students are invited to a recruitment weekend after they've been accepted. So who knows. Keeping fingers crossed about UPenn. Congrats about Cornell! I hear they have a great program (a friend of mine did her phd there). I wish I'd applied to more schools, but my research interests are pretty specific and could only be supported at a couple of schools.

Congrats @unfriendlyblackhottie !! @BionicKris - I know what you mean about lack of sleep....I just woke up from another rejection nightmare! I am waiting to hear from UPenn, Northwestern, and NYU. All three are interview schools, and typically send out interview invites by some point in mid February. I'm getting really anxious at this point...if I don't hear anything in the next 2 weeks, I'm going to start to lose hope. No one has heard from UPenn yet?
