  1. Hello all, I am heavily considering applying to a few quant programs here in CA (UCLA and Davis mainly) and I am wondering what you think may be my chances for acceptance. Right now I am in my second year finishing my MS in I/O psychology, where I have taken courses in graduate ANOVA, regression, psychometrics, research methods, and multivariate methods. In addition to my coursework, I am running an experiment on campus (for my thesis); however it is an I/O related topic. I am also a tutor in statistics and facilitate workshops on campus. My graduate GPA is pretty good (around 3.8). My only concern is that my GRE score isn't especially high (I only scored around 60th percentile in V and Q), although I did get a 5.0 on the AWA. Do I seem like I would be a viable candidate? Applications are due soon, so I need to make the decision on whether or not apply as soon as possible.
  2. Thanks for the input guys! I've been hanging in there, but my motivation is at a low point, and my effort level is dropping already. I think it's time I really assess why I came in the first place before I end up wasting more time and money. Initially I thought it was just the adjustment period, but the feeling is only getting worse over time...
  3. Hello all, I have recently started a master's program in I/O psychology, and I feel as though it may not be the right fit for me. Classes have only been in session for a week, and I am already not too engaged with the reading or material, and find myself questioning why I left everything behind to pursue this. Perhaps it could have something to do with the fact that I have been out of school for four years and the amount of dense science reading required is extreme. I find my mind wandering constantly. Has anyone had a similar experience at the start of their grad careers? Is it normal to have feelings of disinterest or question why you are pursuing the degree in the first place or is this a red flag that this isn't the correct choice for me?
  4. Last application cycle I was rejected from two schools that I really wanted to attend. I am considering contacting them via e-mail to set up an in-person meeting to go over the short-comings of my application - namely the SOP and letter's of rec. I intend to reapply. Is this a good route to go, or would this present me a in a negative light or as being too pushy? Other than the admissions committees, what is a good resource for feedback on SOPs?
  5. Thank you for the thoughtful response!
  6. Hello all, Last application cycle I applied to three MS programs in I/O psychology and was waitlisted in one, accepted in another (without funding), and out-right rejected by the other. Outside of taking and studying for the gre, I was able to gather my application materials in a matter of three weeks (mostly due to a last minute decision of applying). I ended up accepting the offer from the program that accepted me, but now I likely going to withdraw my acceptance because I cannot see myself leaving everything behind and moving to the area where the school is located. I want to avoid relocating and want to aim for a school that is a little more competitive. To give a little background, I have been working full-time for the past four years since I graduated in 2012 in sales, recruiting, and HR type roles. My undergrad GPA was 3.7 and my gre scores were: 152 v, 155 q, 5.0 awa. I had one year of serving in a research lab during my time as an undergrad (from 2011-2012). I received two letters from professors and one from my current supervisor in the last application cycle. Aside from scoring higher on the gre (which I plan on re-taking), how else can I improve my application? I am fortunate enough to be located near a major public university with multiple research labs -- would volunteering as an RA be beneficial for my application? Perhaps I can get a more recent academic letter this way as I have been out of school for over 4 years at this point. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated!
  7. Hello all, Earlier this year, I decided to apply to three master's programs in I/O psychology. I didn't spend too much time on my applications - I was able to get letters and write my essays in a matter of three weeks. I ended up being waitlisted and getting into one program (in a less than desirable location that would cause me to relocate). I was pretty disappointed when I finally found out in May that they did not let anyone in from the waitlist this year. So I reluctantly accepted the offer from the school that accepted me. Now school is set to begin in about 6 weeks, and I am starting to have serious doubts about going. Just to give a little background, I have been working full-time for the past four years since I graduated in 2012, and have a decent job where the earnings are decent (it is in recruiting). The prospect of leaving my friends, family, and familiar surroundings seems daunting to attend a program that is located in pretty bad area and does have the prestige I had hoped for. Not to mention the prospect of having money to being broke again. For all of you who have accepted offers and are close to starting your programs, do you find yourself questioning whether or not you are making the correct decision? I feel as though something like this should be an easy decision - not something you wrestle with for months. I am seriously considering withdrawing my acceptance and re-applying to schools better for next year. How frown upon is doing this?
  8. Finally received notifications from all of my schools. Got rejected from SFSU, waitlisted at SJSU and accepted into CSU San Bernardino. I'm debating on whether or not I should risk it and wait for SJSU because I would much rather go there or just accept CSUSB. Does anyone know if the program at CSUSB is any good?
  9. Hey guys! Debating on whether or not I should apply this year. Do these programs typically require a lot of research experience? I only have one year being an RA back in 2011 (I've been working full-time since I graduated UCLA in 2012). My stats: 3.7 GPA GRE: 155 Q 152 V 5.0 AWA Work experience in sales, HR, staffing. Some of my programs of target are SJSU, SFSU.
  10. Hello all, I am debating on whether or not I should submit applications this year to M.S programs in I/O psych. I am conflicted because I do not have a lot of research experience (only one year). I graduated in 2012 with a 3.7 GPA. My GRE scores were 155 Q 152 V and 5.0 AWA. Since I've graduated in 2012, I've been working full-time in the following areas: recruiting, sales, HR, and staffing. With only one year of being an RA under my belt, I am a little concerned about wasting my time applying to programs that will not accept me. I am also concerned about having lackluster letters of rec. as I do not have close relationships with any professors. What do you guys think, should I spend another year to garner more research experience or do you think I am get in with these credentials?
