Hmm, thanks for your insight.  I didn't have the opportunity to visit :(

What makes things more complicated is that I'd have to do post-bac prior to the MFA program.

    This decision making is difficult.

I think post-baccs can be worth it.  Taking the post-bacc and using the time to make a kick-ass portfolio for other grad programs is an option.

is there anyone deciding to go to MassArt?  Considering going but would have a hefty amount of loan debt (100k)...

Thats a lot of debt :( I would definitely make sure you're making the right decision before going.  Hopefully you had the opportunity to visit!

I was in Boston last year, I know someone who went and didn't think it was the best investment they could have made.  They left and applied elsewhere.  It's different for everyone of course!

I didn't visit the studios but I did visit campus for a Wangechi Mutu lecture, it was pretty great!  The students seemed involved. Otherwise, who can say.

  3. Okay just speaking from personal experience.  I went to tyler and basically all the grads got 3/4 semesters paid for through TAing, they also received stipends for it.  Its not really that much debt and if its someones dream school I think its worth it.  Either way you usually end up paying money even if its just loans for cost of living and the philadelphia cost of living is pretty low.

Jerry Saltz is one of my idols.  He knows you don't have to go to a well-known program to succeed but still recognizes the fact that things might be easier for  you if you decide to.  I think ultimately Jerry Saltz knows how many MFAs don't end up doing anything at all so yeah, that wouldn't be worth the loan.

I think its always a good idea to take the opportunities you want to :)

Hey, so I'm looking for a little advice. I have been offered acceptance into Tyler School of Art and Ohio State University for painting. Tyler is my top pick but they are a two year program and they are offering 50% tuition with stipend. Ohio State is three years and are offering a full ride with stipend for the whole three years. Any thoughts?

go to Tyler... its worth it.   Don't make decisions based on money.  Tyler is a really great program, I'm sure you already know that.  All you guys turning down great schools for fear of loans gotta prioritize, just my 2 cents.

Got the financial packet just now

me too, wow its kind of amazing!  I think I have to call them though and make sure they have everything because my mom's info is a little trickier and i think she forgot to submit info on a house that she is paying off loans on in needaccess.  also her 2015 return wasn't available, but still i don't think it can't change that drastically.

Looks like I'm definitely able to go!!  Honestly I would have paid whatever though ;)

Trapnado are you still deciding?  Come to Yale!

  6. I haven't heard from Hunter yet but they made it a point to tell me at the end of my interview that the longer I go without hearing from them the better.  She said first they notify the rejected, then they notify most of the acceptances while they still figure out some kind of possible awards or something, then they'll notify the rest as soon as they know who is getting what.  I really didn't think they offered much financial assistance given that the tuition is so low but it seems that maybe they do?

Thank you guys for the profound comments! I just realized how amazing it is I even got an interview invitation despite having my artist statement written entirely with Comic Sans lmao. (It's correlated to my aesthetic, though. One of my submitted works is titled "COMIC SANS IS THE NEW GOTHAM" lol.)

Also, @MSMSMS, I know this is a long shot, but is your name referring to SOPHIE (an electronic music producer from UK)?

    hahaha you sound amazing!

It would take a lot more than a mysterious writing fellowship to sway me to go to SAIC after the interview I had with that department, that's for sure!

Now that you're nearly done with interviews, which school(s) are you leaning towards?

Its so hard for me to decide.  I feel like if I got into Yale I would go, but it would be difficult if i didn't get much funding (probably still go anyway).  Otherwise I was absolutely smitten with RISD yesterday.  I thought all of the professors were so amazing and i wanted them to be my family haha.  I met 5 professors who all seemed like they knew every detail of my application already and asked me all the right questions and actually talked about specific influences of mine that i hadn't even shared with them.  I feel like i want to go there even more than i did before now so it makes things really difficult. Hunter used to be my goal and now I'm not sure at all basically.  I also can't look away from free education at VCU.  so yeah, no idea!

    Hey buddy,

    thank you!!!!

I got a call from the painting dept about that one scholarship the rest will come after FASFA is assessed. Also Yale said that we will be notified March 12th in our interview letters. I'd be surprised if I got it. They packaged up my paintings to come back today (I got a call from one of the students) and my interview was a bit awkward. So we will see...it would be nice though.

eh i feel like maybe mine was awkward at some point too, honestly they're just unyielding and i think its safe to assume everyones had a moment like that and they probably expected it.  As for SAIC i got a call for acceptance but nothing else.  They said other stuff is in the mail, i didn't 100% understand/ hear but I'm also not feeling SAIC personally.  Great facilities and faculty though!

anyone bringing in more than 6 paintings?

I saw that you can only bring 6 paintings, even if you don't have 6 "other" (drawings etc.)

  11. have any painters heard from UCLA yet on here?  I'm getting a little foggy on whats truly happening haha... I feel like some people got some phone calls from UCLA painting asking some weird questions but weren't notified of any decisions?  Did anyone get a rejection/ acceptance from UCLA for painting?

  12. ya'll ready!!!??  How's it going so far for people who have interviewed?

Are any other painters not bringing 6 drawings?  I don't draw, my work is pretty materials-based. ...it makes me nervous

Ugh. rejected from columbia painting as of 10 minuets ago.

has anyone else not heard anything from VCU or UT Austin painting? I know they've done interviews etc... I'm assuming rejection.

Still waiting on UCLA and UIowa - I'm assuming/hoping they haven't started responding yet for painting, at least I haven't seen any interview announcements on this board that I can remember

how were you notified about Columbia?  VCU painting sent out some acceptances and waitlisting last night, but maybe they're not done.

Alment, sorry there might be multiple responses here… i think i've got the hang of the response button now. i heard from VCU about wait list via email on 2/24. I think if you get in, you'll have till the deadline mid-April. They told me candidates have till April 15th to accept. That is awesome you are interviewing with RISD. It is an amazing school, I went there for undergrad painting and I had a great experience, feel free to ask me anything about RISD painting or Providence. I have been in the RISD grad painting studios and they are a nice size, with large windows. Do you by chance have any opinion of PAFA? (still waiting to hear from Tyler and UPenn). Thanks and Good Luck!

Hey thanks! I'm excited for RISD but I literally have NO portable work and they want 5-10 portable pieces.... yikes.

As for PAFA, I have mixed feelings.  I know a lot of undergrads from there and they loved it.  That being said, I know some grad students from there who liked it but wish they waited and went somewhere else.  The program seems really geared towards the thesis exhibition where the school makes a profit on big sales.  I don't know many specific details but I think if you got into Tyler or UPenn they might be more beneficial.  That's just my opinion!  It also depends on what kind of work you make.  PAFA seems more academic in terms of painting, so if that's you then maybe its actually a good place.  Don't let my opinion deter you,  I would just air on the side of caution until you visit. You 100% should absolutely visit before you go and then you will be able to see if the cohort is a good fit.  If you are interviewing anywhere else in Phila definitely stop by there and look through the grad studios.

I highly doubt that. How many schools did you apply to?

Hey guys!  So I applied to 11 schools... It is definitely too many, I think I will now take Cranbrook off of my list for their lack of funding.

I'm an idiot because I didn't check my alternate email account.. I just saw an email from VCU!
I was offered full tuition for first year (2nd year will probably be evaluated after) and a 10k stipend for 2 teaching assistantships, Fall and Spring!  Wtf!!!!  I still have interviews to go to and don't have to respond until April (thank goodness) but I will take them up on their offer to pay for a hotel and go and sit in on a crit and seminar this next month!  After I hear back from Yale and Hunter I will let them know whether I accept or not.  Whoa!!!! Going crazy over here!

    Hi

Just heard from VCU, wait listed in painting. Hopefully you will hear soon!

Hey Keris, how did you hear?  I am still waiting to hear back from VCU painting after my interview.  Waitlisted is a good thing!  I'm scared to hear back from them so soon because I still have interviews to go to and don't know if ill be able to give vcu an answer so quick..

Side note, just got an email from RISD painting for an interview!! !
