  1. Thanks! That never crossed my mind. Looks like we will to our inspections at El Paso. Also, Arizona has a hefty vehicle tax you have to pay every year when you register your vehicles hence why we are doing wverything we can to not register them. They take 1/2 of 60% of the vehicle's MSRP and divide it by 100. Then they multiply that by $3 and that is your tax on top of registration. Every year it drops 15%, but we do not plan on staying here too long. Its HOT!

  2. I moved from Texas to Arizona. My husband had to get an AZ license (for work), but I am keeping my Texas one. The DMV in AZ said since we are only here for my studies (2 years), we do not have to register our vehicles. The only thing I had to do was change my address on my license to my parents' house since we sold our house.

We still have not figured out how we will do the state inspections on both the cars. 17 hours is a long drive for an inspection :( . How has anyone else handled this?

Also, you can take the title to court and have your name on it. This goes under gift/donation. Similar to a sale, but there is no taxes or anything involved.

@eternallyephemera I have that same concern, both of my anthro classes are with my advisor. Which is nice, but I also want a little more diversity when it comes to instructors. That'll come later though, I suppose.

@sjoh197 My family and friends roll their eyes whenever I start talking about school. I can't tell if it's because I talk about it too much or they're not interested in what I'm studying.

@ETRXRock Good! I'm glad you're excited! That's what really got me too, was thinking about how awesome it'll be to learn about stuff I love. I'm also super nervous though because it's been a few years since I graduated or did anything remotely academic.

You got this! Its been a few years before I finished my last 2 years at the 4 year college and now I am pumped more than ever. My previous uni never offered these planetary geology courses so I am super excited.

My family also does not give a crap about me being my school or they think I speak another language when I mention it! Only my husband, but hey that is what matters!

  4. I bought the HP spectra 360 and love it!! I downloaded all the software I will be using and started getting some folders organized.

I also have an HP printer that I have had for years but still works great.

I have one of those hard cover books with a table of contents for a lab journal to get my data organized.

For note taking, I like pen and paper. Then I rewrite my notes in another hardcover journal. I have been doing this my entire undergrad and its good to refer back to.

Of course, lots of sticky notes, pens, pencils, and highlighters.

A good planner is a must. Mine is layed out in time slots versus just a blank slate for each day to help me stay more organized.

  5. I've started working over a month at my new university on a few projects. These projects are more on the astrophysics side (I have a background in geology), so learning Python has been fun. I've also started prepping everything to begin my experiments for my thesis when the fall semester starts.

It was overwhelming to skip the summer break and move immediately after my acceptance, but I am starting to see it was a good move.

  6. Stephen F Austin State University in in Nacadoches, TX does not require a GRE. You do not even need to submit scores.

ASU requires scores to be submitted but there is no minimum score required. I had embarassing GRE scores but still got into ASU's SESE. The biggest factor was getting in contact with an adviser that you are interested in working with. A strong interest and a love for your field is what ASU is looking for.

  7. I purchased my first home with my husband during my last two years as an undergrad. Some days I wish I was back in an apartment due to the time I had for upkeep. As I relocate for grad school, I sold my home and will be moving out next month. The selling process and buying process are both time consuming. For my masters, I am going back to an apartment, but will consider purchasing for when I begin my PhD. If you are considering buying to live for two years as a masters, it is not worth it. I was fortunate to build some equity during a short time. Remember, when you buy, you are paying interest the first year (sometimes 2), and your principle remains the same unless you pay extra on your mortgage. I was fortunate to build some equity and my house appraised at a much higher price as compared to other homes in the neighborhood. I will not make this mistake again as most agents we spoke to prior to selling said we will most likely owe when we sell our home since we only had it for 2 years and suggested a much lower selling price than we anticipated. Of course, we went with our gut, sold it for a price so we can make a good profit.

  8. I am traveling 2k miles with two dogs, a huge goldfish, and a husband. I am not comfortable taking my dogs, fish, or husband on a plane haha. We are traveling with everyone in our two vehicles. As a former vet tech, there are "railroads" across the country in which vet techs and other animal lovers volunteer their time to get pets safely to their new home. This could be another option for you but it can take longer.

@ETRXRock Yeah, it's a professor at ASU, but one I haven't had much contact with. His research is exactly what I want to do. I've been counting down the seconds until tomorrow.

I could not sleep the days up until my phone call and now I cannot sleep because I got accepted hahaha. The professor called me and discussed a project. I said yes! Looks like you are on the same path as me. I really hope you get good news. I was worried about my call but my husband said if they take the time to call you, then it will be good news :)

Thanks, @geologist! I just have three rejections so far, with decisions still to come from five schools including Arizona State. The other professor there responded earlier saying we should talk. I've got a phone call scheduled with him on Friday afternoon, so hopefully it'll go well!

And congrats again, @CornUltimatum. Turning out to be a very good cycle for you!

Is the professor you have a phone called scheduled for is with ASU? If so, that is what happened to me. I got a phone called scheduled and they let me know the good news :) hoping you get the same as it would be nice to know a new fellow grad in the program!

    @tsatsang2129 @ChrisTOEFert

This is the email I sent

    " Good afternoon Professor X,

I'm sorry to bother you, especially with an email like this, but would your  program be able to give me an extension on my April 15th admission decision deadline, perhaps until April 30th? I was reading the TA award email and it says that I am able to accept the award and then later rescind it, is that correct? I assume that I'll be okay with respect to the TA award if I rescind it later, but I'm not really sure if I have to do something different for the MA program itself; is there an extension for that or can I later rescind it (or neither)?

I'm just waiting for the results from another university (the only other program I'm considering now apart from your university), and as I might have said before I don't expect to get an award/position that's good enough to make me choose that program instead because the award from X university is very nice! Nonetheless, I just wanted to have all my bases covered and I figured I'd ask to see if it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience to ask for an extension! If it's not possible, I completely understand"

I know it makes you depend entirely on my word, but I don't really want to quote the response word for word. Essentially the department head responded and said that if I don't accept the award they could also lose their #2 choice because they didn't get an award and might choose somewhere else. It sounds like he wasn't really sure if I'm able to ask for extension or not because (as it seems to me) he doesn't regularly have grad students asking for an extension. He CC'd other professors in the department, but they haven't responded yet. They're definitely adhering to the April 15th deadline, but I'm asking for an extension beyond that. Again, I'm definitely not saying that the tone of the email was negative or even passive-aggressive, but I just feel...bad, I guess? I think part of the reason I feel bad is because I'm 99% sure I won't get the TAship I want from the other university, and even if I get one it's likely to be a position that I don't really need/want. So, I just feel like I'm holding up the process for nothing, and I think that comes across in my email a little too obviously as well. It's just frustrating because I really thought I had a TAship in the bag for the other university.

It's also frustrating because if I can't get an extension, I'll never know if I got the position at the other university. I mean, it wouldn't make sense to check back in on April 15th to see if I got the position and then reject it assuming I get it. I would always live with that "what if?" On a different note, one of my friends said I should have just accepted the offer and the program admission without mentioning my doubts and if I get the position at the other university I could just rescind. Personally I feel like that's a really low thing to do, but I also feel like bringing it up before the deadline has put the program into a mini panic over whether or not I will accept. Not to mention the fact that since (it seems like) they've never dealt with this before, it's extra work for them....

I have too much time on my hands to think. I guess I'll wait for the CC'd contacts to respond.

I honestly think you just sent a bunch of stuff and wasted the professor's time, pending he read it all. You should have gone more straight to the point. You did not express much interest to their university either.

Were you the one who posted about ASU being impressed with your application?

No, but my email said the same thing as the other poster so I am assuming its a generic email. I am going to put my update on there now.

  13. It does get irritating when people assume we only play with rocks. Yes, that is what we do, but there are way more aspects to this. The program is difficult for most as you REALLY REALLY have to love what you are doing. In my current university, most attend the program to get into the oil and gas industry. I followed my childhood dream and now I get to study the most bada$$ rocks there is. Meteorites are what inspired to further my education. There is so much to learn from them!
