  1. I would suggest looking at other schools. While Sharon Krause told me that department is seeking to bolster its reputation in IR, I personally doubt this will be achieved within the near term given economic constraints. As noted above they do have McDermott but she is not a permanent hire and may return to UCSB after the 2010-2011 academic year. Moreover, I believe her expertise is political psychology which would have little bearing on proliferation issues from a realist perspective. There is no benefit in attending a school without a relevant advisor. MIT and Harvard Kennedy School (not the government department) are both excellent schools with renowned scholars on nuclear proliferation. As a former resident of Boston, I know several colleagues who make the daily commute from Providence. These would be far better choices for you.
  2. Just received a note from Minnesota. Apparently they've filled all their slots and won't be culling from the waitlist.
  3. Where you headed instead? Out of curiosity, why did you turn down UCSB?
  4. I haven't received any news regarding the Minnesota waitlist. When I last spoke with Joanne, she indicated that it wouldn't be surprising if additional offers were made at the 11th hour.
  5. Just received my official letter of rejection from Georgetown via USPS.
  6. Heck yea - definitely appreciated nevertheless! If I remember correctly, your field is theory?
  7. I am! I assumed after Christina's email last week we would have received an update regarding waitlistees. The anticipation is killing me! Definitely my top choice. What field are you waiting on?
  8. I just received word that I've been culled from Syracuse's waitlist and admitted with full funding! There's still hope!
  9. Crazy. Where are you plan on attending next Fall? Sadly, I don't think your decision affects those of us who didn't receive funding. According to Keri Apostle, funding offers included anticipated decliners. Sigh...
  10. Georgetown and GWU are both infamous for doing so. Because many applicants are current USG employees their respective agencies will often pay tuition on their behalf. For the rest of us, it just plain sux! BTW, are you planing on attending the new admit day at UCSB?
  11. Tuition is not covered and you will have to pay.
  12. I've come to the same conclusion with respect to an informal waitlist. My online status indicates that my application is still under review. I'm assuming they're simply waiting to hear back from those officially admitted before making any further announcements. I recall on Grad Cafe that someone recently relayed a conversation they had with Alex who mentioned the program expected to make additional announcements 'real soon'. While I appreciate it affords USC maximum flexibility in terms of making their decisions, it is borderline discourteous to applicants. I sense most would prefer that USC follow the convention of establishing a waitlist and/or announcing rejections.
  13. How do you know you're not on the funding waitlist? Who did you ask?
  14. Anyone wanna call Alex at USC today and see what's up? I know someone on this forum called last week and reported that they're making another round of decisions "real soon". I still find it astonishing that with a Dec 1 deadline they still haven't completed their admissions process. Makes me wonder about the program itself....
  15. If you're still determined to pursue a PhD I would recommend that you obtain a master's in the interim. Successfully doing so would demonstrate your capability at the graduate level. While in a MA program I would suggest you also try to get a publication under your belt. This will increase the competitiveness of a future PhD application.
  16. Because of the current fiscal crisis of the UC system, most departments are reluctant to promise aid. Nevertheless, there is a good chance you'll get funding. You should anticipate, however, that funding won't mitigate all financial obligations and you'll likely need to find supplemental aid, presumably from loans.
  17. To be clear, most of the posters in this forum are related to PhD programs. You might want to check Grad Cafe's forum for professional programs.
  18. Just received my official rejection from NYU. Looks like the decisions are rolling in this week!
  19. No, I'm sure they already announced the fellowships/TAships.
  20. Indeed. I know I can't afford it. The general rule is to follow the money. Although not fully subsidized, UCSB has offered me better funding opportunities and I'm leaning in their direction. Nevertheless, I'll probably attend GW's admit day on April 5 and see what's the situation.
  21. Accepted to George Washington, but without funding! Looks like a mass email, "The department's admissions committee ranked close to 400 applications this year. The pool was one of the most competitive we have ever had. Our goal is a diverse class of about 15 top-notch students."
  22. My initial thought was that we wouldn't hear from those schools currently out on Spring Break. GW is one such school. However, this afternoon I spoke with an administrator at a different school which is also on Spring Break. I wonder if this indicates admin folks are available to announce decisions?
