  1. Im really not familiar with the University of Pittsburgh. I would think you would need to do a post-bac in greek and latin... Theres definitely a way for you to do this, but it depends, I think, on what youre willing to sacrifice, with regard to both finances and time. The first thing I would do is contact the program you want to be in and see what theyre requirements are, or rather, their recommendations for crafting a competitive app. Since they will require you take and place a high level latin reading course, (or so it seems, I have no idea what 1300 level is) You will have to know latin when you arrive. Again, I dont mean to judge, but I think it would be difficult to learn latin while you were juggling graduate level work in Greek. There are intensive summer latin programs though, maybe you could look into that. A post bac will probably be necessary after you do an intensive summer course, so that you can assert that you still doing well in greek and that your latin is coming along. Penn has a good post-bac, and thankfully youll be right there. It might be worth it to contact them. Also, why do you want an MA, exactly? Where do you want it to take you? All the Best! S
  2. Is there anyway you can get back in that Cicero class? Unless its absolutely impossible, I think its worth thinking about.
  3. Ok, also... How many copies do I need to send of every thing one original and two copies or one original and three copies? I suppose if I don't need copies of every letter, I can just submit one original and three copies, just to be safe. This app is demanding! Good luck to all! -S
  4. I am sure this is a big departure from what you had been discussing but I have a question for all of you. I was recently contacted by the program director and chair of my department, encouraging me to apply for the Javits fellowship. This is my first year of graduate school. Am I even eligible? Things like this in the application really confuse me: Applicants must also either: be entering into a doctoral program in academic year 2011-2012, or have not yet completed the first full year in the doctoral program, in an eligible field of study for which they are seeking support; As I mentioned earlier, this is my first year. As of right now I have 0 graduate credits, but I start school in a week. Thanks for all your help and support. -S
  5. Tricky question! I would think that most people would not find them equivalent, but it should still count for something. The big differences (im sure there are more) are that the passive periphrastic is employed way more in Koine (IMO) and Koine doesnt use the optative mood. The latter of these is really important. The optative comes up all the time. If I were you, however, I think I would just learn the optative forms and read some nice textbook-y Attic (like Apology) and learn the optative forms. The thing to do after that would be to take a class in an attic author and get a nice grade, so you can have something that testifies to your knowledge of Classical Greek. Good Luck!
  6. Some schools do this, but Latin is almost always required. It would be very very difficult, I think, to find a place that would allow you to do Greek and only Greek. Most places that offer a Greek MA do this on the assumption that Greek is just the stronger of the two languages, and that the student will eventually earn a PhD in classics. This is just my experience, so please correct me if I am wrong.
  7. Did anyone get into either of these schools? Does anyone know (or know of anyone) who got into Brown or Penn? If we could exchange messages about it that would be swell. I would be very interested to know what the admits' resumes were like etc. SVBEEV
  8. Does any one if ~ 15,000 per annum is enough to survive?
  9. In the U.S. sometimes all you need is a B.A., and you can even get emergency certification in certain circumstances. Onto the U.K. As a brief aside, OH! how I envy your commonwealth citizenship... getting on, depending on which level you want to teach at, the certification and degrees you will need will likely change, but there is a lot of good info at: http://www.tda.gov.uk. 10. Im pretty sure that those of us who were not invited to the interview weekend got rejected from Brown. That said, each day I hope that maybe all those people decide they hated it and I will somehow make the waitlist. Best of luck to all, and I hope you can find ways of making it easier to wait. SV
  11. Thought it might be nice to mention some non-fretful app/visit stuff for a while. So, let's throw down some of our favorite books. LateAntique, I hope Im not stealing your thunder on this one, but my favorite history / classics pageturner is always likely to be "Power and Persuasion in Late Antiquity: Towards a Christian Empire" by Peter Brown
  12. yeah, I'm feeling you're pain on that joe. The Kthxbye email is bound to come from brown soon, as I heard that they dont ever ever ever take anyone who wasnt invited to their interview weekend. So, my rejection is totally a fait accompli. Sidereal, its becoming more and more clear that you must be sometypeof classics ninja. Did you snag one of UW's funding packages? If you'll pardon the shameless prying, do PM me about it. Im just curious, cos I know they werent really going to fund anyone, and you seem to have fared extremely well this season (which is nothing short of amazing, hence the ninja inference.)
  13. @ Venetia (and woefully off-topic). Are you from somewhere much close to say, the Europe? You must be, or you at least seem to be throwing down some more UK-y terms (namely flat and advert) either way, that's safe. Also adverts are a swell band. On Topic: Yeah, a friend in NJ suggested the village voice. (Im afraid it will focus more on too-rich-for-my-blood manhattan) Why June for the ultra sexy party website? I am afraid that making a decision that quickly will result in an ill-thought out tenancy in a rodent infested hovel. Like many of my grad school bound peers though (im sick of hyphenating things) I am far too paranoid. @ Ali B. 1500/ mo. would be awesome for a three bedroom... 1000 would be insane. like, cataclysmically wacko, but still quite awesome. Unfortunately, I don't actually know much about the English side of med studies, only the french, german and Latin parts.
  14. through the 'vine. A prof in my department proclaimed that the top 3 for Medieval Studies were Toronto, Harvard and Fordham in that order. That was also confirmed by one of the Medievalists in the German dept. Sorry if that was misleading or if you thought there was some official org. whose site i was quoting. There is, tomyknowledge, no official ranking for Medieval Studies departments / programs. Probably for the very reason why I had to write /programs.
  15. Word. Fordham is ranked 3, I believe, in med studies. Getting on, I am about to go there for a visit and would like to start organizing my move. Anyone know where to start looking for apts? Other than craigslist? ( I have a phobia).
