HopefulSocPhD got a reaction from lapeliroja in Fall 2016 Acceptances, Interviews, and Rejections Thread
I just got my last rejection as well (also Yale), 0 for 9. I'll be continuing to teach science to low-income high school students.

People who have gotten into several schools, what do you think set your applications apart? So many people are lucky to get into just one school. Why do you think some applications are accepted to many programs?

I sent an unsolicited submission to an int'l academic conference, attended and ended up winning best paper award! Really only steps 1 and 3,4 are interesting.
Step 1.: write a paper that has original research & insight, not just a lit. review
Step 2.: format the paper to look like a real paper, use proper citation & footnote, labeling etc.
Step 3.: google "call for papers" + <your topic(s)>
Step 4.: once you find a call for papers you can usually submit your manuscript (without any author names) via an online intake system such as easychair
Step 5.: You will be notified if the reviewers accept or reject your paper. if they accept you will likely need to make some revisions based on comments
Step 6.: Pay your own way to the conference. I used my vacation money to go there. Sucks. Whatever.
Step 7.: Network with people. Get drinks with folks in the evenings, sit at different tables for different meals and meet different people. They may assume you are an academic, but if they asked, I just said no, I am not but I am planning to apply to PhD programs next year.
Step 8.: Slap it on your CV
Step 9.: Rinse & Repeat

Sounds a lot like an unwritten rule from what I'm reading from you all. That's very frustrating to know at this late stage in the game.
Alright, I'm throwing in the towel. Best of luck to everyone.

Sorry, could you clarify? As in, they are trying to keep the cohort small, or they are being more careful with rejections since this year's cohort ended up smaller than intended?

To the BROWN poster in the results page that said "email received, decisions out later today" -- are there additional offers? Or, just "decisions" aka... rejections?

I agree. It's really disheartening to get bad news and almost as bad to expect bad news. I stopped looking at the grad results search page and stick (mostly!) to the forums after seeing a waitlist entry for a program I applied to, and nearly weeping over a cup of coffee and overthinking how I could have made my application better. And then the same day I got an acceptance! The same thing happened to a good friend of mine last year when she was applying to a program - convinced herself that she wasn't going to get into her dream school because she saw lots of acceptances on the search forum, until a month later she saw she got in. Even then she said she wished she hadn't looked because it kind of made her feel like she was a "second pick" but then got over it and rejoiced in getting into the school she wanted to. Anyway, even if you're waitlisted at a program that isn't the end... February fortunately/unfortunately has a long way to go and things could very well shift. Good luck, and I hope you get some good news soon!

I'm sure people keep saying this and you're probably tired of hearing it, but it's not over until it's over-- even without Brown, something could pan out at the other three schools. That being said, I think I get where you're coming from. It's incredibly frustrating to be in this limbo (can we just call it hell?) that keeps feeling less hopeful. Anyway, I'm rooting for you, but yeah-- this is brutal.
I've been trying to do whatever I can to take my mind off it-- with very limited success. Do something to take care of yourself today if you can.

You guys here in the sociology forum are all great applicants who really have put their all into this process. Proud to have you all as my friends. :-)
(sorry, that was so cheesy)

HopefulSocPhD reacted to macadamia tea in Funded Masters Programs?
@Paul_SOC which programs in particular?
I will add to the OP, anyone know any decent master's programs that offer funding for international students and have deadlines later than March? I realise that's a pipe dream, but I am staring to pathologise my application since people with profiles that seem similar to mine seem to have offers raining from the sky.

BROWN INFO:
Just called Brown's Student Affairs Coordinator. She told me that some offers had been made but they still have a list that needs to be approved by the Graduate School. So therefore, not all have gone out. It seems like they are sending them out as they are approved by the Graduate School.
So just wanted to fill you all in on what I was told.
There is still hope everyone!!!!
