PhD in Education/Human Development/Educational Psychology
francienolan replied to Freddie.l's topic in Education Forums
Sorry to hear! Do you have other plans? I got into three schools out of a total of 8 applications. All three were the best fit with my research interests and professors. -

For Maryland (teaching and learning) it said “Under Program Review” for months and then changed to “Under Grad School Review” and maybe 24 hours after that change I got an email with the rejection letter attached. This was almost a month ago though… they’ve really put you through the wringer if they haven’t given you a decision yet! I’m sorry about that! -

Congrats on Arizona! Are you still waiting on Maryland? I just checked my portal and it has been changed to "Under Grad School Review" which seems to be the precursor to a rejection based on all the posts I have seen on this forum in the past few years. Oh well! -

Haha yes it still says “under program review”. It seems silly that they won’t just put “waitlisted” at this point! Did you get an acceptance from Maryland? I’ve already decided on NC State -

Interesting - my Maryland portal still says “under program review”. But, you’re right - you only need one! -

Congrats on Missouri! I’ve heard from NCSU, Ohio, UPenn and Johns Hopkins and am waiting on 4 more (Maryland, UNC-CH, South Carolina, Virginia). -

I applied to literacy PhD program, but I also have heard absolutely nothing from Maryland. I didn’t apply to the other programs you listed! are those your only apps or have you already heard from a few other programs? -
Congrats on UB! I’m still waiting on four schools!! Has anyone heard from UNC-CH, U South Carolina, UVA or UMaryland? I haven’t heard anything from all of them - not a peep about interviews, etc and there’s been no updates on the results board for these that I’ve seen. I’m pretty certain that I will be choosing NC State though

Fully-Funded Teacher Preparation Programs?
francienolan replied to The Penguin and Podiatrist's topic in Education Forums
The short answer is: I highly doubt there are any programs like that in the US in any states. The longer answer: Like the previous poster asked - it also might depend on what state you are in and what the state offers. the federal govt offers the TEACH grant which gets you funding if you agree to teach for four years in a pre-approved low income school/district. You do have to be very careful though to follow all of their steps because they will deny reimbursement of your paperwork isn’t perfect (so I’ve heard). In most states you can pay for a licensure program that will allow you to teach the subject you want. And you said you already have a masters in your area of expertise, so I would go the licensure route and not pay for another masters. But those aren’t free either, and definitely don’t give you health insurance. However, some districts will allow you to be “emergency licensed” which means you apply to teach science (as an example) and prove to them you have the masters (aka, you’re qualified to teach science) and then you have a full time job (with benefits obviously) while you attend the state’s or local university’s online or in person licensure program to become fully licensed as a teacher (ie, by the end of the school year you become fully licensed instead of "emergency licensed"). Thats the best answer I've got! Truly, its expensive to become a teacher and then once you are a teacher, you don't get much pay… -
Agree with this! The numbers and luck involved in the top top programs is so competitive! I’m an alum of UPenn and definitely applied, but my research interests were not a great match and I know it- just kind of figured I should shoot for the moon, you know? I’ve already heard back from NC State and Ohio - both top 30’s with funding AND big enough programs that there’s many profs I am interested in. playing the game of applying to PhD programs is so vastly different than applying to undergrad and even masters programs! (Just adding all this here for posterity when newbies join the forum looking for info!) also, I’m waiting on 6 more programs, haha! It’s brutal!!
-
How is everyone doing?! It’s been quiet in the education board for the past week! I’ve gotten two acceptances and still waiting on 6 more. how did the interview weekend at UPenn go for those of you who went? I’m crossing my fingers for all of you!!!
-
Depends on where the school is located in the US. It’s such a huge place that 23000 could be great in a rural area but not livable in NYC, San Fran, Boston, etc. Of course you could stretch it with roommates and hopefully some sort of job in the summer months that could cushion it.

Congratulations! Nice work

Hi everyone. I received an offer from the specific school, but it's contingent upon the overall graduate school looking over my records and also accepting me as student. It says on the page that in order to get an official offer I have to fill out a enrollment intention form. But is that binding? Is this how all schools do it? You're not officially "in" until you sign this form? Thanks for any thoughts!
-
I think it's a little of both. Most likely, people are reporting offers they got this past week. I received a confirmation that my status had changed on one of my applications via a 2AM email! Who knows when they set these things to go out!
-
Congrats on Clemson!!!
-
Congrats on Illinois! I heard back from NC today, but same as you - no word on funding yet. It was nice to get something positive though

Anyone have news? I know the main threads in the Education forum are focused on Harvard/Penn/Stanford/Columbia, but how about other schools?

PhD in Education or PhD in Curriculum and Instruction?
francienolan replied to PinkTeacher901's topic in Education Forums
Hi! I am in my 9th year of teaching middle school English right now, and I understand your dilemma! My advice would be to contact professors at programs you might be interested in to get a sense of what the EdD entails vs the phd. I had a wonderful zoom call with the head of Virginia’s EdD program, and while it sounded amazing, I could tell it wasn’t quite what I wanted. But I also went back and forth a great deal over the years about the two programs. Ultimately for me, I decided that I was ready to devote myself fully to research and to let teaching take a back seat. The EdD is so focused on staying in the classroom or admin (that’s the whole point!) but I felt like it would just be like another masters with a slightly more intense paper at the end - I know that’s a little unfair, but it helped my process! I submitted 8 applications this fall for PhD programs and I am SO ready for this new chapter! I know it was the right choice for me. -
Hi everyone! Stopped by to say hi because I'm waiting on much of the same education schools I applied for PhD in curriculum with a focus on English or literacy depending on the school's program: South Carolina, UNC, NC State, Virginia, Maryland, JHU, UPenn, and Ohio. Haven't heard from any of them, other than an interview in December with NC State. I was doing a good job of not getting impatient/anxious, but now that it's mid-January I've lost my cool
-
Hey - I came to GradCafe to see if there were any posts about this! But yours is all I could find. I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row to apply for the online program. It's such a short turn-around to apply! Although the application isn't even open yet.

@TheMonkeyOnMyBack No, I meant that its heartbreaking that someone heard about a welcome weekend from CU (I'm presuming), but I haven't received an email - which I take to be a bad sign. -
