  1. was any sort of correlation found between academia hits from cities of schools applied to and admissions? i know its a long shot, but I just got a hit on my academia page from Stanford, CA. and I wanted to get really excited...but i know it probably doesn't mean anything special——i just want to get in somewhere!

    Yeah. That's normal.

is it? well, if so I guess thats a little comforting since, so thanks!

Same.  Going in I was totally confident.  MA degree in hand. Publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Contract with a college doing curriculum development for a political theory class.  Then no call or wait list from Chicago, Arizona, and now Virginia... #freakout

yea, maybe I was also confident going in...but I didn't think my confidence would leave so fast! I  just want to hear something. I feel pretty safe assuming that I didn't get in to Chicago and Arizona (and now UCSD :(), but the worst part is the ever so slight thought that there might still be a chance for those programs.

Also, Jac: thank you for putting so much effort into the admissions blog. I sincerely appreciate the predictions!

i agree. thank you! having the predictions makes the process a lot more fun...its more of a guessing game and not just the feeling of anxiety and randomness

Anyone see the weird "all schools" post? Odd.

Yeah. I guess it makes sense, though.

Definitely second that it makes sense, but also the post seems to imply that at least some people behind admissions keep an eye on the survey page, and maybe the forums. Which, to me, is a bit intimidating to consider.

Wait, maybe I'm just a little slow. I realize that the post was deleted...and that is not why it is up any longer. But what would this post have been referring to? Or why does it make sense? Why would that imply that admissions keep an eye on the page?

    Hurrah! Another continental!

I am finishing a Theological Studies M.A. right now, but my background is in both religion and philosophy. I did my philosophy B.A. in Leuven, Belgium where the Husserl archives are and I'm currently writing my Masters thesis on William James and Husserl.

    Where are you applying?

Wow, writing on James and Husserl sounds like it could be a really fun project! How are you connecting them? Also, if you don't mind my asking, where are you getting your theology MA?

I've applied to UC-Riverside, Northwestern, Columbia, Toronto, Georgetown, Boston and University of Chicago. And a couple others that may not be as open to continental thinkers/history: Yale, UC-San Diego, and UT-Austin. How about you?

  6. Hey all, I started to post here the other day but never introduced myself.

I am currently finishing my MA in philosophy! I did not study philosophy as an undergrad and have thoroughly enjoyed my MA—I am very much looking forward to doing PhD work. My interests, as my signature notes, are mostly in the history of philosophy...but I also love contemporary issues relating to aesthetics and religion. I tend towards "continental" approaches to philosophy, but I also like a lot of the issues being discussed in analytic-style philosophy of mind and language.

As far as my 'professional' experience goes, I've presented at 10 or so academic conferences. Some were professional, but most have been student conferences. I didn't have the best undergrad GPA (I often found myself distracted by many interests) but my MA GPA is 4.0.

Also: I have found the application process extremely stressful—though, I bet most people would say this, too.

    Best of luck!

@ Swann: I'm nervous for the same reasons, but as far as I can tell (and please do correct me if I'm wrong) there's only one confirmed wait list notification, plus StFrancisXavier's report of somebody in his MA getting accepted. That's it - doesn't sound like a full acceptance storm yet, so there's still hope. At least that's what I'll be telling myself until the moment when disappointment strikes in the form of an actual rejection. I hope they at least have the courtesy not to use the exact same rejection letter they used last year.

    @Swann @nonexistententity

Just based off of the last few years, it looks like Northwestern sends out acceptances and wait lists over the course of a week or so (especially notable in 2013). They also seem to have sent out rejections around the same time (2015, 2013) or a week after acceptances (2014) and there have been a few notifications of a wait list or two a few weeks after the first acceptances came out. I wouldn't worry just yet because the first claimed acceptance came out on Thursday and the first gradcafe wait list came out Friday. In the past four years, Northwestern hasn't released much if anything on a weekend; so, I would say it's safe to assume you'll hear back really soon with something and I wouldn't assume it's a rejection, though it is more likely.

    Best of luck,

    Jac

When I followed up about the WL he said that they have 5 WLs based on AOI. So there's a possibility that northwestern only notified the accept(s)/WL for metaphysics & epistemology. Just speculation at this point, but completely possible.

Thanks so much for the helpful and encouraging replies!

This process is anxiety-inducing (but also exciting!) so it is nice to be able to post here and get such wonderful feedback from others in similar situations :)

  8. Hey everyone,

I'm new here...I didn't think that I'd be this anxious after turning my apps in, and I have a question that someone here may know how to answer.

I've noticed that there were a couple postings about Northwestern sending out notifications of acceptances and a wait list. Is it safe to assume that they have sent out all their acceptances, and have just not sent out rejections yet. Or, do these notifications come in waves? Is it safe to assume that no notification from them last week = a rejection? Or am I getting worked up too early?

    Good luck all!
