I vaguely remember it been around noon when people have heard back in.previous years. But I guess it could be any time during the work day. We don't even know the day for sure. This is torture..lol

so apparently the regular NSERC doctoral scholarship results are out...shouldn't they let people know about the Vanier first?
Yeah...I wish we knew! Although I was told that SSHRC results won't be out until late April. Surprising that NSERC released them so soon.
-
Oh no...the last modified thing should mean that they've been posted but not released yet? Although they wouldn't update the date to early April if they were going to release them early. So my feeling is that it's still going to be next week sometime. Ugh..I wish they had a fixed date and would just stick to it!
-
Noooooooooooooo!!!! Why? And when in early April?
-
Wonderful! Now it means obsessively checking my e-mail and researchnet for 2 days instead of one
-
Omg! Each day feels like a week. I just want to know. Even if it's a no.

I wish there was a way to know if it's the 30th or the 31st :S That "end of March" timeline isn't helping my countdown.

E-mail said that funding is limited for international students. I will follow up with an e-mail asking about possible future or external funding as well as TA and RA opportunities.
oh ok..good luck with that. I just declined the U of A offer.

I received 3 results in a span of an hour. It's the most stressful thing ever. I was waitlisted by Alberta which was a bit unexpected. They said they will contact me around April again. I also received an unofficial offer from Carleton. The catch is that the offer is unfunded so I don't really know what to think about it. I will be sending a long mail filled with questions about future funding to them.
I will let Alberta know tomorrow that I'm declining so hopefully that frees up a spot for you! Strange that Carleton hasn't offered funding. I was under the impression that all Canadian PhDs are funded.

I have the same question as well. Different schools have different deadlines and I'm still waiting to hear from two programs but the deadlines of the other offers are coming up soon. I've already asked for an extension so I don't know how much I can stretch it further. If I accept and then get a better offer a few weeks later, is it acceptable to send an e-mail with an explanation?
-
I applied to two DPhil programs- Politics (Jan 6th) and Area Studies (Jan 20th). I already heard from Area Studies that they are moving my application to the March deadline so probably won't hear from them for a couple of more months. Last Friday marked 10 weeks for the Politics application but I still haven't heard anything from them :S Not sure what to make out of it. I asked for an extension for all the other offers I have at the moment but I don't have too much time. Hopefully this week there will be some news!!!

@Pahi With regards to U of T funding, did you forward them your competitive offers from other schools? I did this and they bumped my package up significantly. So I've accepted U of T's offer
As a matter of fact, I did! My McGill package was a lot more competitive. I also sent them U of A's which was equally as good but they didn't even mention it once..hahaha. They have informally agreed to hiking it up to match McGill's but I'm waiting for them to re-send the official letter before I accept.

Any news from those on the waitlist? Any final decisions?

@Pahi I'm on the same position. I'll probably accept but it doesn't feel very effective (academically speaking) to spend so mush of our time worrying about money and applying to any possible scholarship. Unfortunately this is how it works at UofT and that is why their average completion is at 7 years. It's kind of crazy if you think that their standard package is below the poverty line (20k for Toronto). Many students end up taking more TA and RAships but they don't have time to take the courses they need/want or do their research. It's a great program though and provides great opportunities to those who are active.
Certainly! A financial offer like that doesn't really offer much "peace of mind" which arguably, is so important when you're planning to dedicate many years of your life to an intense program and actually try and excel in it. Alas! The things you'd do to follow your passion Are you a current U of T Masters student? Could you please share some more details about the program, especially for PhD students. Thanks a lot!

Did anyone get the funding details from UofT?
Yes, I got the official letter late on Friday. In absolutely terms, the funding is better than other schools but it includes tuition which is double of most universities. So what you get in your hand is quite a bit less than what other universities are offering. I have 2 other offers that are considerably better than what Toronto is offering. Not sure what to do now since as it stands, Toronto is my first choice but you can barely survive on what they're offering :S

Did you receive an offer from Alberta without an interview?
Yes..This is what I got in the e-mail:
"I know I had contacted you earlier about doing Skype interviews, but the Graduate Studies Committee has decided that in order to increase our chances of recruiting our very top-ranked applicants to the doctoral program, we should make a select number of offers that skip that step."
I am likely declining this.

Anyone heard back from Toronto? They said they'll send out funding details today but haven't hear anything yet. Also claiming a U of Alberta offer.

@Pahi sorry to hear that. You've been accepted to great schools though! Good luck with the rest of your applications.
Thank you. Just got an informal offer from Toronto too. Literally got into every school other than the one I really wanted to but oh well..can't really complain. Have you heard back from UBC?

Just received a rejection from UBC

Thank you! Part of Mac's package includes an OGS and I'm up for another faculty-wide award which I won't know about for another month.
Yes, I didn't initially get any info from UBC, either, so I emailed them. Apparently they don't rank people on the waitlist. The other thing they told me, which I thought was weird, was that although the person I'd asked to supervise was in very strong support of my application, the dept. wants to "balance" advising workloads across the faculty, and the person in question already has a few students. I've heard of other otherwise-strong applicants get turned down for reasons like this at other institutions, but it's frustrating to be in a similar position!
I had e-mailed potential supervisors in October/November and the 2 people who could supervise me said they're not taking any new students. So I ended up writing to the program director to find out which professors are taking PhD students because it was a lot of work reaching out to the 2 I did in the first place. I read their publications, tailored my research proposal accordingly, making connections between my topic and their research area and after a week or 2 of doing that, all I got was a blunt "sorry not taking new students." The program director told me straight up that if those 2 profs weren't taking students then it's unlikely that I will receive an offer. I sent the application anyway!
It was frustrating because they don't tell you anywhere who is taking on students and who isn't. Had I known a few months before, I probably would've approached the application differently.

@existential cowboi This is frustrating indeed! I guess at this point it really depends on whether some students with similar interests with us will decline. It would be nice to know how many of us are on the waitlist so we know if it is pragmatic to expect some good news. The funding package is much better at UBC than at UofT and I would prefer to go there.
I wrote to UBC last week and they said they'll notify me either by Friday (last Friday) or Tuesday this week. Not sure what that means because they didn't say anything about the waitlist and offers have already gone out so I'm assuming it's going to be a rejection. I wrote to the grad program assistant. Who have you guys been talking to?

Waitlisted for a PhD at UBC and will notify me after March 15, which is the deadline for those accepted. Also got an unofficial offer from UofT through a professor but the official results are probably coming next week. Between the two, I would prefer UBC but we'll see. I am not sure how long the waitlist at UBC is and how many decline since it's a pretty small cohort (10 incoming PhDs).
That's amazing about the U of T offer!!!! Wait list is definitely better an outright rejection. Good luck for UBC!
I'm still waiting to hear from both UBC and Toronto and I know they should be sending something out very soon. My heart skips a beat every time I get an e-mail :S

Thank you! That's tough, it can be hard to time applications to ensure the people you're interested in working with are available and new taking students. I went to York too btw, so if you have any questions about that department feel free to message me. Best of luck, I hope it comes through for you!
Thank you! Really hoping it works out at UBC. I was really impressed by the department at York but I'm leaning towards McGill as of now. Can't really make a decision until I hear from Toronto and UBC.
