  1. Ohio State is largely known for qualitative work (do they have a pop studies center?). I'm currently in a Sociology PhD program and am transferring into a dual Sociology/Demography program with the goal of working outside of academia. If I were you, I'd take one of 2 approaches--- 1. Get into the highest ranked (rankings matter even if you don't want academia) sociology program and use the prestige/networks to get you where you want to go OR 2. Get into a sociology program with a pop center (such as Minnesota, Michigan, UNC, UPenn, etc).
  2. It was tailored to my name. I was shocked to hear so early since the website says not to expect to hear anything until April.
  3. I just heard from them--accepted!
  4. People are welcome to pm me if they want to ask questions. The short story is that phds take a very long time (8+ years in my program) and a lot can happen in that time: people get married, family members get sick, advisers retire, financial problems, and poor job market outlooks.
  5. In at Upenn Demography I am a special case--already at a top sociology program in my second year and looking to leave.
  6. I have a friend who applied to sociology phd programs a few years ago. She got in everywhere she applied (all Top 15 schools). She had a Fulbright research fellowship straight out of undergrad. Also--students who win the NSF GRFP
  7. Hi All, For those who are interested --- I emailed University of Pennsylvania Demography and Princeton sociology about notifications. Penn: by end of February Princeton around February 15
