  1. Also a Harvard wait list and it is my top choice.
  2. I tend to just default to "one" even though it sounds pretentious. In this case I might also just use "a candidate" or "that candidate" for making my language gender-neutral.
  3. I object to the use of the "universal" masculine here, but can appreciate the sentiment.
  4. Nothing too personal...
  5. The e-mail came at about 6:30 on the west coast, so 9:30 in Toronto?
  6. Claiming a Toronto admit! (about to post)
  7. Hey @gughok your stats and school list are both pretty stellar. I'm curious what your top choice is?
  8. I don't put a lot of stock in it, rather it is just titillating to think that the programs are showing interest in you. I think after you've been accepted such hits could be coming from faculty. For instance, last night, immediately after some e-mail correspondence with faculty at one school, I got a hit from the location of that program. I have little doubt that it was the prof. googling me.
  9. USPS media rate
  10. I've been getting hits from Toronto and New York - dying to know what it means.
  11. Rank v location v really good funding?
  12. This is actually very high (perhaps the top) on my priority list... A good grad group/cohort is key!

Hey All! I wanted to start a thread to talk about visiting prospective programs. What are you looking for in a program? What criteria (e.g. academics, lifestyle, funding, placement, diversity, pgr rank) weighs more heavily for you? What are the important questions to ask/have answered when you visit? I want to get the most out of the visits, and so I think preparing a list of questions/criteria would help me evaluate and eventually choose where I want to go. Of course, part of the reason for the visits is that some measures can't be quantified or communicated by means other than just being there in person. What do people think?
  14. But knowing what we know about implicit bias, it is more than likely that you are underestimating the abilities your female peers, while overestimating the abilities of your male peers. Also, philosophy ladies and minorities: you are badass, and you deserve every spot you're offered. Don't listen to any sore jerk who says otherwise!
  15. I too wonder about the Toronto admission...
  16. Thanks, coming to this forum has been strangely comforting through this process. For those of you who don't know me (ahem, all of you), my levels of self-doubt could put Hamlet to shame...
  17. That is true, I have still to hear back from 9 places (3/4 of which I will likely withdraw from), though I am presuming a rejection from UCLA.
  18. Personal as in it was addressed to me, but the content seemed pretty standard.
  19. Just got an e-mail from UNC!
  20. I'm happy about my admits, but I still have 10 apps waiting out there (6-8 that I truly care about, 1 presumed rejection) and I just wish I could know all at once where I was rejected so I could figure out my life for the next 5+ years...
  21. we're getting trolled hard...
  22. Big congrats!
  23. So the advice I got was just to make sure I have funding package offers in writing before withdrawing any apps.
  24. I think programs appreciate it if you let them know early, not to mention the other applicants. I think also it will give them a good impression of you, should you hope to collaborate with them in the future, whether by attending conferences, interacting about philosophy, etc. With these programs, it isn't so much an itch I want to scratch - I have good reasons (behind the scenes intelligence) to believe I would be admitted to both. I know I probably wouldn't even visit if I were admitted. I guess these are probably good questions to direct to my faculty advisers, but maybe people on this have some ideas
  25. Hi, so based on my acceptances so far I can reasonably say that there are two places where I applied that I would not accept admission to, were they to make an offer. What is the protocol around withdrawing an application? Should I do it asap, or wait to hear from the program? Should I send an e-mail or just do it from the application system site? Thoughts?
