  1. ahhhhhggg I didn't see that one in the results list before because I was only searching "SPEA". I see the MA acceptances...le sigh
  2. Wisco is a great program, you should be through the moon to be accepted here especially based on your interests. Nice job here. MI, NW, Stan and Prin are all comparably ranked as Wisco...Keep in mind that acceptance is largely about fit once you make it past hard thresholds like GPA and GRE, which you clearly were capable of since you were accepted into a top program (wisco). Sometimes the committees know more than we know about ourselves. No committee is going to admit you into a program that cannot ultimately support your trajectory. I would be in touch with Wisco as soon as possible, with a cheery and grateful disposition. You are very lucky. Madison is a great town to spend 5 years in, as icing on ze cake.
  3. Is anyone here currently waiting on word from the Public Affairs *PhD* program at Indiana SPEA? I see some results listed for the Masters track but nothing for PhD.
  4. Can you verify which program exactly you were accepted to? Is this the Public Affairs PhD?
  5. I was not invited to an interview as a wait-listed applicant last year.
  6. I would not follow up--it's way too early in the application cycle. I applied to ND last year and they were the last of all schools to report; they also had one of the latest due dates. I feel like being in touch with people you know during the application process is always sticky and it's best to tread lightly.
  7. instead of chasing your love of sociology broadly, focus in on a area that you can see yourself working in for a long time such as race, immigration, sexuality, etc. Let your professor for directed research know of your intentions to apply to graduate school so that they know that they need to help you prepare a writing sample. Your verbal and analytical writing scores need to be increased.
  8. If you can get in to a for-pay terminal MA program at somewhere like Columbia or U chicago, then you can get into a low-ranked phD program and jump to a higher ranked program after you complete the MA. You will have an assistantship and stipend instead of $40k in student loans.
  9. WOW! that's awesome! what a game-changer!!! that's a great program. Good luck and congrats
  10. Hi (Name), I have solidified my plans for Fall 2016 and will not be accepting this offer. Thank you for being communicative throughout this process. It is an honor to have been considered for a position at (Name of School). I wish you the best of luck in securing a solid cohort for the upcoming year. Sincerely, Name
  11. I applied to peacecorps this year as well as graduate school and made it through three rounds of interviews. I was ultimately rejected. It's actually more selective than graduate school, statistically speaking. Good luck!
  12. I received a rejection from Vandy on Feb 26th. No rejection then you might be in hold pool.
  13. April 15th is like the national commitment day I think
  14. I'm starting now reapplying--today made a list of schools to look into and professors' work to get to know. I know what I want! I'm retaking my GRE. I scored in 80th and 70th percentile last time but it's just not enough to be competitive. I'm plan on getting my applications in well before the due date this time around--too much stress meeting deadlines in the process last time, completely avoidable with proper planning. I'm also focusing on expanding my interest area. I'm looking into profs as theorist instead of profs who studied the same topic or case that I'm interested in. I also plan on networking and working on making contact well before application season heats up. Finally, I'm expanding my application pool. I applied way too high in the rankings this year. There's plenty of middle-ranked programs with great professors who will help me on my way.
  15. hmmm I'm always paranoid about calling schools--I'm sure it'll come eventually. I was wondering if I was missing the location of the link or something. If you call, post back here!
  16. anyone else figure out their amherst website? can't find the link to my decision letter. can anyone confirm they have been posted?
  17. again I think this is something you can do but understand that you got one spot in a program that probably 50 people at a moments notice would drop everything for, move across the country, for half the offer you probably already have in hand. If you want more than you have, you're not asking...You're leveraging. So, be prepared to have a leverage conversation.
  18. it is reasonable to ask for more money, but it's more like negotiating than asking. It is normal to assume that the offer is fixed, unless you have leverage. Some departments will be able to squeeze a couple thousands more from the Office of grad school, from the college level or even the department level. But you should go into this conversation with something like, "I have a similar offer at another school. I'd like to choose your program but need more. what can you do for me?"
  19. This offer will be sent to all applicants who exceed mandatory minimums set at the level of the graduate school and were not accepted into the PhD pool.
  20. I was just starting the thread for the community. I don't think I need any pointed advice right now--I'm getting a lot from my personal network. I wanted to see how other people who didnt have success were thinking of moving forward and how they are reflecting back on their process. I appreciate your offer tho!
