Very interesting. Have you checked out the UC Press food studies journal Gastronomica? I had a short-lived subscription to it which ended only because I didn’t have the money to continue. It had really fascinating papers and discussed issues about food that intersected with politics, ethics, international relations, and everything else under the sun that I never would have thought about before I read it.

I'm not the person who posted the rejection from WashU, but I do know that the programs that use applyweb post decision letters on your particular application portal (or whatever it's called).  And, WashU uses applyweb, so I would guess that rejection letters are posted there, and that is where you can check your status.

Waitlisted at UC Davis.  I'm extremely pleased to not be rejected from this program, because it's one of my top picks.

To my mind that is understood to mean UChicago.  And who am I to question this pillar on which lies the justification for my anxious freakout which knows no boundaries...

I've yet to hear back about 9 applications, and even with those numbers, it's getting a little hard to feel anything but a hangover.

In fact, this whole discussion implies a prescriptivist outlook on language. Otherwise all you can say is: "Hey. Some people use "he". Some people think that's sexist and use 'they'. But I make no judgments either way."
