  1. Hi everyone! I've been doing a bit of research on living expenses as a (single) grad student. I found this cost breakdown on Yale's site and was wondering if anyone else had seen it or if the current grad students can verify how accurate it is. I will probably be able to shave quite a few of the expenses here if I stay in the South for my PhD program (I've been accepted to Vanderbilt), but in case some other offers pull through, I wanted to get a better feel for my options. Thanks!

    Hi all,

I just got this email from a professor at UC Davis inviting me to chat on the phone. We've scheduled only a 15 minute window (which seems too short for an actual interview). Here is some of what the email says:

"I'm writing today in regard to your application to our PhD program here in the Department of Statistics at UC Davis. We are impressed with your application and would love to have a brief chat on the phone. Basically, we want to see if you have any questions for us and just to let know that you are high up on our list of candidates. We also want to make sure you have a direct method to contact us if there is any question or concern you might have."

l know they have already made some offers, so is this their way of saying they like me, but they're unsure? I feel like a teenage girl again reading too much into a boy's text haha... I want to think that they are close to making me an offer, and simply wanted to reach out, but I don't want to be presumptuous.

Thoughts or similar experiences? Thank you!

I had a similar experience with a computer science professor at Vanderbilt shortly after I submitted my application, and I ended up getting a fully funded offer! We were scheduled to talk for about 20 minutes, but we ended up talking for nearly an hour. I was thinking based on the words she used in our conversation ("we can have a longer conversation about that later" was used frequently) that I had a pretty good shot, so I hope everything works out in your favor. Good luck!

Finally got my funding offer from UCSD! "This financial package represents the highest award that the Department offers and is a tribute to your outstanding qualifications for graduate study." SUPER excited for 5 years of guaranteed support AND no TA-ing my first year.

San Diego sunshine is looking better and better. :)

    Outstanding!

I'm seriously having a panic attack. I just checked my application on ApplyWeb and saw that the "date completed" changed to today... I know it's probably false hope, but I'm hoping to hear something from the school SOON. AHHH. My palms are sweating.

Even if I don't hear back at all today, at least I'll be receiving a package. I splurged on a nice coat, even though it's 91 degrees in LA, lol.

Hi (again) all! I'm  working on becoming more active in the thread, but I noticed this message and wondered if anyone else had seen something similar. This just happened with my UMD application and I've been trying to rationalize it for the past few days. My GRE score was the last thing checked off on my application, and I had the scores sent when I took the test in October. Weird!

Howdy, and welcome. I think you both will love nashville. The rent will indeed be very high around Vandy's campus. I would just start looking around, there are lots of nice places out towards Bellevue, South Nashville, Nipper's Corner, Woodbine, etc. I live near Woodbine, on Nolensville Road, and this would probably be the best place if you're looking for Mexican food and the like. There's a huge multi-ethnic community around here and tons of taquerias and restaurants as well as other ethnic food spots. As with most affordable neighborhoods here there are pockets where people might be more concerned with crime, etc. But i've never experienced that.

Public transportation is very hit-or-miss. I've never used it because the routes are quite inconvenient for me. But if you're coming from the right place you could certainly get to and from vandy on the bus. Good luck!

Thanks for the overview! I'll try to find more information about each neighborhood before the Grad Student Visit. I was hoping to be able to look around at some areas while I'm there, and this should give me a great start.

    Figured I'd bump this thread.

I've been accepted to Vanderbilt for Fall 2016. Pending something odd, I am going to attend because, hey, funding! In any case, I have never lived outside of Texas before, living in DFW or Austin most of my life.

Now I'm obviously looking for a place to live. While the idea of living near Vanderbilt is appealing, one look at the rent nearby dissuaded me of that idea immediately.

So has anything changed since last year? What are good neighborhoods to live in? And how's the public transportation in Nashville, specifically to Vanderbilt? I'm a car owner, so commuting wouldn't be a problem.

Lastly: where do all the Mexicans live? I'm Mexican-American and given that I've lived among my people for most of my life, does anyone know how large the community is in Nashville, as well as where all the Mexican tends and carnicerias are? Mexican food is just food for me :P

Pretty much the same scenario here. I'm strongly considering Vanderbilt, so apartment suggestions are totally welcome. I've only been to Nashville once, so I'm not totally familiar with the neighborhoods. I'm a car owner as well, so a 15-20 minute drive to campus isn't out of the question. (And I love Mexican food! :D)

  7. Hi all!

I'm new to GradCafe, but it's already proven to be quite the useful tool for a newly admitted grad student. I'm happy to say I was admitted to Vanderbilt's PhD program in computer science! Still waiting to hear back from other schools, but it's a big relief to know that at least one offer has come through. I was emailed February 3rd and got my official notice from the University a week later.
