  1. Well I officially got my rejection notice from Columbia! I've already accepted my offer from Vanderbilt though, so I'm not hurt over it. Good luck to everyone else still waiting!
  2. I was in class (I'm still in undergrad) when I got my first email. There were about 10 minutes left, so I just kind of sat there dazed. As soon as it was over, I walked straight to my car so I could sob in relief.
  3. A few I know Vanderbilt: March 3-5 University of Maryland, College Park: March 3-4 NYU Engineering: March 3
  4. I'm wondering the same. I haven't seen many other users that have applied to Columbia's CS PhD program.
  5. Hi everyone! I've been doing a bit of research on living expenses as a (single) grad student. I found this cost breakdown on Yale's site and was wondering if anyone else had seen it or if the current grad students can verify how accurate it is. I will probably be able to shave quite a few of the expenses here if I stay in the South for my PhD program (I've been accepted to Vanderbilt), but in case some other offers pull through, I wanted to get a better feel for my options. Thanks!
  6. I had a similar experience with a computer science professor at Vanderbilt shortly after I submitted my application, and I ended up getting a fully funded offer! We were scheduled to talk for about 20 minutes, but we ended up talking for nearly an hour. I was thinking based on the words she used in our conversation ("we can have a longer conversation about that later" was used frequently) that I had a pretty good shot, so I hope everything works out in your favor. Good luck!
  7. Hi (again) all! I'm working on becoming more active in the thread, but I noticed this message and wondered if anyone else had seen something similar. This just happened with my UMD application and I've been trying to rationalize it for the past few days. My GRE score was the last thing checked off on my application, and I had the scores sent when I took the test in October. Weird!
  8. I just got mine last week. I'm not sure what this means for the process, but that was also the second reply I've gotten from my list of schools.

Thanks for the overview! I'll try to find more information about each neighborhood before the Grad Student Visit. I was hoping to be able to look around at some areas while I'm there, and this should give me a great start.

Pretty much the same scenario here. I'm strongly considering Vanderbilt, so apartment suggestions are totally welcome. I've only been to Nashville once, so I'm not totally familiar with the neighborhoods. I'm a car owner as well, so a 15-20 minute drive to campus isn't out of the question. (And I love Mexican food! )
  11. How did I not notice this?! Somehow I ended up in the Sociology thread without even realizing it. Lol sorry guys! Good luck to everyone!
  12. Hi all! I'm new to GradCafe, but it's already proven to be quite the useful tool for a newly admitted grad student. I'm happy to say I was admitted to Vanderbilt's PhD program in computer science! Still waiting to hear back from other schools, but it's a big relief to know that at least one offer has come through. I was emailed February 3rd and got my official notice from the University a week later.
  13. Hi everyone! I'm new to GradCafe, but I've been poking around and it seems like a great resource for new grad students. I'm happy to say I was admitted to Vanderbilt's computer science PhD program! I was emailed on February 3rd and got my official notice from the University a week later. I'm looking forward to hearing from other schools.
