We've wined, we've waited, now it's time to celebrate 2016
marycaryne replied to hippyscientist's topic in Officially Grads
Not including my husband (the obvious lol), I told my parents and a couple of friends that I was even applying. I didn't want to tell people about applying and then have to possibly inform them that no one wanted me. Now that I have the acceptance from the school I wanted, I posted it on FB for everyone else to know. The ones who already knew were decent enough to not continually ask me what was going on as they knew I was already pulling my hair out. -
1 week till deadline and no rec. letter from prof. yet
marycaryne replied to Rk29's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I had a professor stall on writing her letter as well (my other ones submitted a letter within a couple days of me asking). I sent out the reminder from the application site, I sent friendly emails. She'd usually respond with "I have xyz going on but I will do it this week!" and then the week would pass with no letter. Finally I sent her an email that let her know (in a polite way) that her letter was the only outstanding item preventing my application from being complete. The letter was submitted that evening. Professors know there are several components to an application and it seems like when she realized she was the one and only component that could be blamed for an incomplete application, she was on top of it. If you're unable to get a substitute, I would perhaps go that route. Still be polite, but let her know her letter is the only thing everyone is waiting on. Hope you're able to get through to her! -
Were you able to track the status of the transcripts online at all? The portals at the schools I applied to would list when transcripts were received. FSU would periodically send out emails to let me know what portions of the application they were still waiting on, such as specific transcripts and LORs from specific people. I definitely appreciated how they handled that and wish more schools were that communicative. That said, if you're already having trouble with the school and this is only the application/admissions process, it seems like it would be a real headache if you actually went there. I also wouldn't be impressed with the school at all for the director's actions. Speaks quite loudly for how the students are valued.
-
Would it be selfish of me to cross my fingers for you about FSU? Because then we could be awesome there together! I do hope you hear back from everyone. I haven't heard anything from two schools and have considered emailing them, but FSU was my top choice anyway so I might as well update my sig.

The good thing is that my husband at least somewhat understands... He attended seminary and has an M.Div. Plus the seminary required way more hours than any other masters program I know of: 90 hours. So I can at least hold it over him that I won't be in school nearly as long.

I don't want to peg my husband as being unsupportive. He just doesn't quite understand how I want to be supported. I am more of the dreamer while he is a realist so I understand his need for thinking about all of the logistical stuff while I am just going "let's go!" even though it's not very fun in the moment. And I know he hated seeing me really upset about a rejection so he tried to make me laugh. He said his big fear was not getting any acceptances, especially from FSU (as it was my top choice), because he knew I would take it very personally even if the decisions had nothing to do with me. But his internal thoughts don't always translate well into how he shows them. He's a work in progress.

I'm so sorry your husband is that way!! My husband is generally that type of person and I was surprised he didn't say anything like that when I received my acceptance (at least not yet). But I think he at least somewhat learned when I got a rejection from OSU and he was cracking jokes for a few days. I know he was trying to lighten things up so I wouldn't be so upset, but I finally snapped at him about it and I think he got the picture of how upsetting it was to me. OSU wasn't my top choice (it was only top in terms of the in state tuition), but getting my first rejection was a blow and it sucked and I didn't need a comedian, I needed a shoulder. I do expect that at some point soon he will be making comments about the cost of attending FSU, which I am not looking forward to and already has me wondering if attending is the right decision. Ugh I hate the feeling. I'm glad we have Grad Cafe to support each other without all of that.

YAY!!! I am SO happy for you!! Congratulations!!

@Pink Fuzzy Bunny @Neist @hippyscientist @thepinkdragon76 Thank you so much! It is definitely a weight lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I can breathe easier now.
-
Just checked portal at Florida State and I was accepted!! So happy...this was my top choice! Definitely celebrating today!
-
I'm still waiting on three. One released their undergrad decisions today, so maybe now they can tell me their decision for me.
-
EEK!!! I am SO happy for you!! Congratulations!!!

There are many reasons people opt to do their degree online. Even if PhD programs pay the student, there may be reasons doing a traditional setting is just not possible.
-
Oh my word that would be anxiety inducing! I had to stay on top of one of my references because she wasn't getting it done. Are you able to do a last minute reference from someone else by any chance? I know "last minute" isn't very appealing but if the one flakes out, at least you have that other one in so your acceptance can be processed!
-
This exactly. I don't think it would be right to be so restrictive on how long applicants have to decide if the schools themselves can't send out their decisions in a reasonable timeframe.

@ChrisTOEFert The number of errors we see is a big issue. In just this thread alone we've seen people being sent emails to register for classes when they were actually rejected from the school. That's a problem. And we shouldn't have to tell people to reach out to the schools if they haven't heard anything. We did our parts. The fact anyone has has to reach out at all because a school hasn't responded is another problem. And it goes back to what I was saying...there are some schools that need to get their crap together. I'm sure we can dissect it every which way to figure it out, but if there are a number of people continually wondering what is going on, it's not a bad idea for schools to re-evaluate how they are handling their responses. Especially when there are people waiting 5+ months to hear anything.
-
Traditionally, maybe. But that is not always the case. Some people have never even received a response from schools they've applied to.
-
This is a prime example of why many schools need to get their crap together. It's not like they only have in-state applicants. There are out of state applicants. And there are international applicants. Both groups cannot wait until the last minute to hear from schools...especially international applicants. There is too much that needs to be done for a school to be all "Eh, we'll send a decision whenever we feel like. Well, MAYBE we will...".
-
@hippyscientist I am right with you on that. My program isn't very large either. Most people go only for their undergrad because most places aren't looking for someone with a masters in merchandising when hiring. That narrows the applicant field considerably. So why it takes so long...I don't know. It's extremely frustrating, especially when I know it's a program that isn't getting hundreds of applications.
-
This is how I feel. I understand schools/programs may have many applicants. But to have no communication after we pay those feels is just unacceptable to me. I'm not really interested in just handing out free money without any communication in return.
-
Sounds awesome to me! I hope I hear an acceptance soon!
-
@PattiJeane That's awesome! I am waiting to hear back from from Florida State, which is my top choice.
-
Top choice - They emailed me and said they'd finish reviewing my application last week and I'd get a decision shortly after. It's their spring break right now and I'm not holding my breath that I'll hear anything tomorrow, but it would be nice. Well, nice as long as it is an acceptance. 2nd school - Rejected last Friday. 3rd school - I am almost positive I will be rejected just on space issues alone. I think I would have to turn it down anyway but it would be nice to do it on MY terms rather than get rejected. But I'd like to hear *something* from them. 4th school - Not a peep from them since I turned in my application. Just crickets chirping everywhere. And it doesn't seem like they are the most efficient at several things either. Definitely not my top pick, but I can't say I'd be thrilled with the feeling of getting a rejection. Still, some communication...ANY communication...would be nice.
-
Congratulations @artsy16!!
-
@PattiJeane Wow that's unreal. There's really no excuse for those kinds of errors to occur. I'm so sorry they screwed up and ultimately screwed with you!
