Is it still the case that some people here won SSHRC but have won Vanier etc., and then give up SSHRC? Anyone have any information about waitlist movements from previous years?

I was waitlist last year but didn't move up or anything.

    Was it this post?

I think that's referring to last year's competition (she probably got off a waitlist or something). If it's a different post then god help me

This is from last year as she was awarded a 2019-2020 award and we're being considered for the 2020-2021 awards....i think

This makes no sense, especially considering that I'm pretty sure (or at least I'm hoping) nobody in Ontario's received an email yet. This is honestly really frustrating, especially given that NSERC managed to pull this off without a hitch.

Someone from UfT tweeted they won sshrc

The year refers to the year that you begin holding the award, not the year when you apply. Last year’s applicants began receiving funds in the 2019-2020 academic year, so it was considered the 2019-2020 competition. I applied this year and all communications from my awards office have referred to this cycle as the 2020-2021 competition.

    Ah, got it. Thanks!

I called the Graduate Awards Office at uOttawa and they notified me of my outcome. Perhaps you could do the same. I hope this helps and good luck!

Hey, fellow uOttawa person here. Congrats to you!

Also, did you happen to just call and speak to a random person or a specific person?

I emailed yesterday and was told that they don’t have the results yet. Wondering if I should call someone specific tomorrow.

  6. So, what did your first year of PhD look like? If you could share your experience for those of us who are about to start ours very soon, that would be great!

Is it a lot of coursework? Reading? Extra research? Meetings with supervisor?

  7. This probably depends on school, but since I'm not starting my doctoral program until September, I was wondering if the PhD programs allow its students to take courses abroad? Say in the summer if I want to take a few courses outside of state, and have them count towards my degree? I'm in Canada btw, and will be starting in Ottawa this Fall.
