My $0.02 , talk more about what your plan to do. The hint lies in the name "Statement of Purpose" , starting paragraph about what you did as a kid is a waste of space and attention span.

I have an undergrad degree in electronics and 3 years of work experience as a UI developer. I had applied for Masters in Computer Engineering last years, and didn't make it to any school, possibly because I applied very late. This year I am planning to apply for HCI programs. If I am applying to the same colleges this time, should I explain why I made the switch? Any pointers on how to go about explaining this?
