  1. You may have a smaller selection, but I'm sure you'll be able to find something. You might consider checking out craigslist and area apartment websites in the meantime. We actually lined up housing without visiting. Some people think that's crazy, but we can always turn it down if we get there and it's not what we thought it would be. :-)
  2. You might consider getting there sooner to try to beat the rush. My SO and I were planning to move at the beginning of July, then we found something available for the beginning of June, so we're moving earlier. Also, things that I've read make it sound like the town is pretty dead when during the breaks, so I'm really looking forward to getting acquainted with the town and taking care of some of the pre-term business before all of the undergrads get back to campus.
  3. I will be keeping my facebook account, and I will likely friend classmates with whom I am friends. There are two guidelines that I've followed with my facebook. First, there are no drunk pictures of me that are available to more than a handful of people. I wouldn't want all of my classmates or many of my professors to see that. Second, I base whether or not a friend a professor on my level of familiarity with them and on who they have as friends. If they do not have my classmates as friends, I definitely don't friend them, because they may be trying to maintain that boundary. On the flip side, I really haven't decided if I will accept friend requests from undergrads. I didn't accept them from my high schoolers when I taught high school, but I don't think that I care as much about maintaining a distance between myself and undergrads.
  4. I think that makes a lot of sense. One of my younger professors went to Texas A & M for her Ph.D., so I know someone with recent information about the area. As far as on campus housing, all that I know about it is what they have online. I only looked at "family" housing, so I don't know about apartments for single students. I do know that they are building a new on campus apartment building, but the old "family" apartments are pretty old. That may not be the case for single grad housing though. I also know that on campus housing doesn't allow pets.
  5. I'll be in the English department. I was checking craigslist daily. It took some time, because I had fairly specific criteria (i.e. house, larger, close to campus, allows pets) to accomodate my significant other and me. If you're moving by yourself, or if you don't have a so many criteria, it should be really easy to find a place. Right now people are advertising for openings in June, July, and August. I also googled "College Station rentals" and used links from the grad housing area of tamu.edu.
  6. I've heard from the last school today, so I'm sending an email today to let them know that I will attend in the Fall. I've already lined up housing as well, so I'm getting really excited.
  7. My take is, dress up for classes that you are teaching, and wait and see for classes that you are attending. I think that it kind of depends on the school as to how dressy your classes are, but you should probably dress in a way that distinguishes you from your students when you are actually teaching.
  8. Does anyone know what the deal is with University of Washington? Apparently their admissions committee is one of the latest to meet. I've seen that some people have gotten rejection emails, but has anyone been accepted? Last year, someone posted that they email rejections and mail acceptances, but who knows if that is accurate or still the case.
  9. Several schools have free online classes. The problem with these is that you're getting the lecture and likely not the interaction with professors, even over email. Best of luck!
  10. Dr. Bhattacharya at Texas A & M specializes in 18th century colonialism.
  11. I emailed Bev on Tuesday, and this was her response: The admissions committee is just finishing up the second round of readings and will be meeting this afternoon. We will have more definite results by the end of the week at the latest.
  12. Not yet. Waiting to hear back from a few other places before making travel plans.
  13. I will likely enroll in the English program in the fall.
  14. I started using Swaptree this summer. I've mostly gotten popular novels and movies, not many scholarly books. If you want some books for leisure reading, it's great. All that you pay is shipping on your item.
  15. I applied there to work on Victorian lit with an emphasis on empire. Last week I got an email saying that I had not been accepted. I received the official letter yesterday.
  16. Accepted at Texas A & M. Victorian lit with an emphasis on empire.
