    DAAD 2017-2018

Congratulations! I visited Tübingen for the first time last December, a really cute college town. Have you been before? To those who asked, @zadigblue's experience was exactly mine as well. I applied for a long-term research grant. Fingers crossed for those still waiting!

    DAAD 2017-2018

@mom5298 Sorry! But please try again! I didn't get DAAD last year, but did this time around. It's a frustrating process, but ultimately worth it.

    DAAD 2017-2018

My letter JUST came! The portal changed to funding on Tuesday (28 March), and the letter came today (Monday, 3 April). Hopefully yours all come soon!

    DAAD 2017-2018

@hbfisch00, Congratulations! Yes, it seems that optimism is probably warranted at this point. I looked through last year's thread on this topic, and there were similar delays in the official letter. Still, it would be very nice to see more than one word for confirmation! After contacting my university grants office about the situation, they should it would probably be fine to let my advisor and department head know, but I haven't informed anyone else (except you all!). Hopefully we receive something more definite this week!

    DAAD 2017-2018

Does anyone recall from prior years or personal experience how long it takes to go from a status change in the portal to receiving a message? I'm just in a state of disbelief until I see more than one word!

    DAAD 2017-2018

Herzliche Glückwünsche! You're right, persistence is key to funding (and grad school and life even?)! I applied for long-term funding from DAAD last year and didn't get it. I checked this morning, and my portal says Funding!

    DAAD 2017-2018

Good question! I'd like to hope the latter, but I recall a lot of parsing of potential outcomes of portal statuses last year and I'm not sure what the final verdict was. I think I saw you had a great outcome for Fulbright, congratulations!

    Fulbright 2017-2018

Hi all, Follower of this thread for months now, and have joined ranks of the endless waiting that is Alternate. Does anyone know of any data of how many alternates are named? I'm sure it depends on the country, but any information would be greatly appreciated. Congratulations everyone, no matter the outcome, for getting through this process!

    DAAD 2017-2018

Hey everybody! Those of you who saw the portal changes: was that simply because you checked the portal regularly? I only checked my status after reading the thread, and yesterday it said Selection Made. I don't know when it switched though, as I hadn't logged in since submitting the application. I am applying for long-term research. It looks like the odds may be a little better this year. I dug out my rejection from last year, and they had 157 applicants and 40 scholarships. (8.43/10 wasn't enough, for perspective.) Good Luck to everyone still in the running! Selection Made hopefully means any day now...
  10. Hi guys, Ja, the DAAD application process single-handedly destroys the German stereotype of Order and Efficiency, haha. I personally haven't seen anything explicit about formatting, so @Horb's information will have to be the default. Or just assume whatever is most convenient for you, I guess! I plan to go with whatever spacing I need (will I be long-winded or not?), Times New Roman, 12 point, 1 inch margins, the classic. Maybe the headache that comes with the application process will somehow improve our odds? Trying to keep a positive perspective on this!
  11. Hi all, Apologies, I posted a question and then failed to check the forum for a week! @maelia8, yes, that's exactly it. I wrote to DAAD NY and got the following response: ' Thank you for the email and sorry for the confusion. Please follow the guidelines from our “Application Checklist” (5 pages). ' I hope that helps! Now, if only we knew what sort of formatting they liked...
  12. Hey all, I was just wondering if there was already a thread for this round, or if we would just use this one again. I'm applying for long-term research, and I've found a discrepancy in information about the research proposal. Thanks!
  13. @abreak, @Horb Thanks for the links--that's a lot for me to work through already! For any others looking for Germany-specific funding, there is: http://www.research-in-germany.org/en/research-funding/funding-programmes/overview-phd-students.html Congrats to all those getting good news today, and to those of you still waiting, hang in there!
  14. Hi all, Congratulations to all new recipients; you will do great things! A small update for those of us in the cursed 'Alternate' purgatory: Germany took 41 alternates for study/research, ~1/2 the number of total research grants. I am not sure how that compares to other years/countries, but it does offer some perspective. With this news, I won't be anxiously awaiting a promotion message. There is always next year, at least.
  15. I am hoping more for research (though study could be entertained). I am currently doing a PhD in the USA, but opportunities in my subfield are fantastic in Germany, and my department is very supportive of people leaving for a year (or so) to collaborate on research elsewhere. Thanks for any leads!
  16. Hi all, Fingers crossed for those still in the running. For those of us out, do you all have any other funding opportunities that I may not be aware of? Aside from DAAD, it seems Fulbright is the other option. Humboldt Stiftung seems to want PhDs only. I would appreciate direction to other funding sources. Vielen Dank!
  17. Hi again, Just to clarify the already confusing process: I DID in fact receive an email today 'Neue Mitteilung/New Message DAAD-Portal: Bewerbun'. The message just tells you to log into the portal. Out of habit, I just checked the portal before logging into my email today. I guess I don't have to do that anymore! I am an alternate for Fulbright. An agonising fate, as the wait never ends. I am mentally trying to move on, though, to assuage the anxiety. I'm an optimist, so it is difficult. Daumen gedrückt für alle!
  18. Hi tritalk, I didn't. I think you will have to brave the cold and log in!
  19. Hi all, Lurker since February--this (and the Fulbright thread) have been helpful to the waiting process, and I thought I should share what little information I have in small contribution. DAAD status is impossibly confusing this year! I applied to a long-term research grant (more than six months), from North America. My status went from 'application submitted' directly to 'application rejected', with nothing in between. This was Tuesday, when many others here said the same. Today (so someone is working, at least!), I had an actual letter, but only in the portal. Someone else mentioned getting one earlier, so maybe they are coming for all of you fellow rejectees, soon. It really helped me with closure. The letter does say that the committee had to decide between 157 applicants, and were only able to award 40 (a 25% hit rate). I assume these numbers were for my programme only, but hopefully that helps others in different categories maintain perspective. I haven't done enough detective work to compare that with prior years, to see if our speculations about funding cuts/reallocations are justified. The letter also does give a X.XX out of 10 rating, which is very helpful. I would like to know concrete ways to improve, though. Best of Luck to all those still in the running, and for those of us commiserating, please don't be too hard on yourself. I did, for a day, but everything will be all right. You are all very smart people, I promise!
