Everyone around here is weighing the options of which school they should choose based on the availability of public transportation and the median rental price and I'm sitting here like...well I guess my student loan grace period will be ending soon what am I going to do with the next year of my life to deal with my mediocrity? Just kidding, kind of.

Is there anyone else out there that is only sitting on multiple waitlists and rejections?

Haha! Your comment made me laugh out loud. I was in your position last year - 2 waitlists and a rejection. It was making me so anxious all day every day. I decided to make a detailed "back-up" plan with the time I had on my hands to wait. I opened a word document and noted what classes I would take/re-take, how I could gain more in-field experience, applied for more observation hours, and contacted local schools with SLP programs to see if I could get any kind of research experience. I ended up not getting into any last year, but it felt SO MUCH better knowing I had a solid back-up plan in place. (I completed my list during my year off and this year I was accepted to *almost* every school I applied to)!

Best of luck to you! I hope this helped a little.

I am going to live 13 hours away from my home. I think it will be exhausting to live an hour away and try to do your clinical, meet with your cohort and professors, and classes. I would recommend moving thirty minutes closer to campus so you have the best of both worlds. It won't be nearly exhausting driving back and forth, but you'll also be close enough to visit your family.

Unfortunately due to financial reasons moving is not an option for me :( It's either Monmouth, Speech@NYU, or (if I get in) Montclair

  3. Hi everyone! I just received an unexpected admissions offer from Monmouth! My question is, how far would you drive to attend a graduate program? I live about an hour away with no traffic (61 miles). Do you think it would be unrealistic to drive back and forth to & from class?

Thanks in advance for the input!

Called this morning and was told there are still a lot of applications they're reviewing. She said everyone will know before the end of the month whether they've been accepted or rejected. Through email and portal first. Then a letter in the mail. @lindsayg1993 where did you see people getting accepted? Or gradcafe?

Yes, on the results page! Is there a way to check the portal? When I look at mine all I see is a copy of my application.

    I'm waiting (im)patiently as well.

Ugh it is the WORST feeling! Do you know how they do it? I just called and asked and the rep said she couldn't tell me anything about the process.

All interesting answers. Yeah, I would be afraid of waiting too long.... The thing is, I searched this forum, and it looks like last year, people who got into the school I'm referring to were asked to send in their deposit by about April 4th. It's just so strange to me that they can ask that, when other schools in the area don't typically send letters until MID April, or up until May. It's like, how the heck can I say yes to you guys and give you my money when I don't know who else might want me? And honestly, it comes down to money for me, so even IF I got in all my schools, I want to go for the most economical option. I guess then, I'll call the school (if I get in) and ask if it's okay to wait until a certain date to send a deposit..

Are you referring to Montclair State?

  7. Hi! I am pretty set on NYU, but am still waiting to hear from Montclair. I saw some acceptances from the AuD program and some rejections from CSD within the past week on the Results page. Does anyone know what's going on? This seems slightly different than previous years.

Hi Lacuna, did your admissions advisor push back your deadline? My advisor told me she had to speak to the director Natalie but I still haven't been given an answer and the commit letter is due by this Thursday!

Sorry to but in, but when I was accepted back in December I tried to get them to push back my deadline by 2 weeks and it was denied :( Sorry! Hope that helps.

Sorry, I'm gonna have to be the downer in this thread. Having gone through grad school already, I just want to say that anything nearing six figures is a ridiculous amount of money for this field... I understand it's your passion and your dream and so on, but so many young people underestimate the impact loans can have on your future. It's a general rule of thumb that you don't want to take out more loans than what you expect to make your first year out... and let me say that I do not know ANY SLPs who started out even remotely close to a six figure salary, and I live in one of the most expensive locations in California!

You can try to bank on PSLF, but imo, putting all your eggs into one basket can be dangerous, especially when PSLF might not even be a thing in the future anymore. SLP is a great degree and I love the field as well, but please put some more thought into taking out tremendous amounts of loans. It is a crippling feeling to be shackled by such absurd amounts. Congratulations to you all for getting accepted into school, but realize that at the end of the day, your degree is your degree. Rankings and such don't really matter in this field.

"$90,000 is reasonable to have for student loans."

I am sorry, but I absolutely CANNOT condone this, AT ALL. In what world is 90 THOUSAND dollars reasonable to have for student loans? That is an INSANE amount of money!!! Few people realize how disastrous this will prove in the future. Think about it; you are nearing physician levels of debt at that amount!

Take a look at a few of these threads to see what established SLPs have to say. You can see that a six figure loan is definitely, absolutely, no-way-in-hell a "reasonable" amount

Unfortunately this is the reality and only option for many people. I am attending NYU, which I'm fully aware is very expensive, but not very much more than my state school would be.
