  1. Ah, cool. Thanks! I've been trying to figure out where to live. If I am looking at any specific apartment complexes would you have possibly heard of them/known people who have had good/bad experiences with them? Obviously on their websites all of these places make it sound like their apartments are the place you want to live.
  2. So I'm definitely going to KU in the fall! I'll be in the Math PhD program. When I visited Lawrence seemed like a pretty cool town! The whole downtown area was a lot bigger and nicer than I was expecting. Having a car definitely seemed borderline-necessary. There were lots of buses going around to the campus, and they run pretty much constantly. However, the town spreads out pretty far away from the campus, and if you have any intentions of ever leaving the town of Lawrence - and driving the 40 minutes over to Kansas City seems like something you'd want to do from time to time - you're definitely going to want a car. Up next: Finding an apartment!
  3. I'll be at University of Kansas in the fall! I'm excited. Go Jayhawks and such.
  4. I emailed someone a UIUC and they said I was far enough down the list that they didn't think they'd be able to tell me either way until after April 15th.
  5. I'm going to visit KU tomorrow and Tuesday! I'm looking at their math department, but I'll be sure to report back with the feel I got for the town. Anything in particular I should look out for while I'm there?
  6. I go to school a couple of hours from Cornell, they know who we are and that we're a good school and yet from what I've been told they've never accepted anyone from my school. Snooty fuckers. I know that this is useless information.
  7. I spoke to someone at Kansas because I won't even be able to visit until after the 26th, and they said I can wait until April 2nd and see what's going on then.
  8. I'm having the same problem! I got notification on Friday that I have until March 26th to accept my offer from University of Kansas, but I'm still waiting to hear from 5 schools. Sorry if I'm keeping you from hearing back from Kansas! I also still need to visit KU, which I emailed someone about, but it appears their spring break is this week so I'm not sure I'll be hearing back. Blerg! I thought the stressful part was supposed to be over.
  9. Can I ask: Is your username serious or is it supposed to be ridiculous?
  10. Hey are you on any other message boards? I feel like I recognize your username.

  11. It's my understanding that they usually give fellowships/assistantships to PhD applicants. A lot of the time, you can apply for a PhD, go through the first two years and leave with a masters having gotten paid for it. That said, the one PhD program I've gotten into so far offered me a graduate teaching assistant position for which they're going to pay me, should I go there.
  12. Yeah, it was a nice letter once I figure out what it was saying and I was trying to reason out how many people could possibly be on the top half of the waiting list, but I have no idea how these things work.
  13. I got a letter today saying that I'm in the top half of the waiting list. It was a rollercoaster of a letter. It opens "We got 350 applications..." so I thought, oh I didn't get in. Then, it said "After careful review we think you would be good for our program..." so I thought I got in! Then, it said "Unfortunately, we can only offer 20 people..." so I thought I didn't get in again. And then it said I was on the wait list. What kind of people are writing these letters?!
  14. I got a letter saying I'm in the "top half" of the waiting list at UIUC.
  15. I loved both Real and Complex analysis as an undergraduate. I don't know where exactly that will lead me since it seems most people who research analysis use it to work on PDEs but I definitely want to explore each of those areas more. I also really, really loved set theory and I'd be thrilled to research some kind of logic/set theory stuff. Pretty much I want to learn more about everything, but those are the areas I'm particularly excited about at the moment.
