  1. I'm currently in year 1 of the MSW program at U of T and we don't have to declare specializations until next semester. There is no competition, you just pick one. I'm not sure how it works if you're applying to advanced standing though!
  2. Hey! I'm not sure if you've found it or not yet, but there is one. It's called U of T FIFSW MSW class of 2018 @SarahMc67
  3. I was accepted to the Lakehead HBSW in Orillia (saw online), but havent recieved the acceptance package yet so I'm not sure how long we have to reply. I'll be declining the offer, so when I get the package I'll let you know what it says That way you guys sort of know when you should see some move in the waitlist
  4. Hey!! Thank you I applied to the 2 year MSW program. Thanks for the info, I just found it weird that people have heard back but I havent heard anything. I know they only accept a tiny amount of people aha so I didn't have high hopes, really just curiosity!
  5. Anyone else who hasn't heard anything from York? I haven't received e-mail or mail, and my MyFile still says "no decision made." I already accepted Toronto's offer as it was my top choice, but I'm just curious if other people also have heard nothing?
  6. I know a few people got offers on March 30 or 31st, so I think people can probably start to get off the waitlist the first week of May!
  7. I definitely wouldn't consider getting waitlisted at UoT a sign that you aren't meant to be a social worker! 2-year MSW programs are VERY competitive.. especially if it's your first time applying or your right out of undergrad. I hear the Lakehead program is great, and then if you apply for a 1year msw after you're not actually losing any time! However, if you're having second thoughts and think advertising is for you.. then maybe you're leaning that way for a reason? Ultimately only you can decide! I think if you apply to college programs they'll probably get back to you before June though.
  8. Hello @SamSat! There was a post a couple of weeks ago from someone who's currently in York's 2-year MSW.. I can't seem to find it now but if you read through the thread I'm sure you'll find it, or maybe someone else can link it here for you.. but they basically said it's far from being clinical or mental health-focused... at all, and that it focuses on micro and macro level social policy theory, anti-oppression, LGBT-Q rights, etc. as opposed to focusing on mental health, health, or counselling. This kind of social justice dense program is super important and needs to be offered somewhere, but it wouldn't give me the kind of education I'm looking for. Toronto and Laurier's programs are more focused on clinical and mental health practices.. whereas there may only be one class offered at York for that type of thing. I want to go into mental health, specifically crisis work/depression/suicide/mood disorders/counselling/addiction work, so York is totally not for me, but I know a lot of people who love the anti-oppression, social justice curriculum that York offers.. so it's really a personal decision on what you're interested in and what you want to get out of your msw!
  9. Does anyone know the differences between Laurier and Toronto's 2-year MSW programs? They both seem to have a clinical focus.. as opposed to York's anti-oppressive social justice framework. Anyone else have any insight on the difference between the two programs?
  10. @T. Although I agree that accepting two offers sucks for other people, if it's in your best interest I would think its something you COULD do. Esp if you think there's a good chance you won't finish that research methods course. It would be awful for you, as a good candidate, to not get in over something like that. I also think that in a few months you'll definitively accept one offer and let the other school that you accepted know, at which point the candidate that initally lost out will receive an acceptance. Right? It will just be later.
  11. Thank you so much! I couldn't believe it, I was expecting to be waitlisted at best! I only have one year (two semesters) of research experience as an RA in two psych labs, plus a 95 in research methods (mind you, my overall average is only 81). I didn't do a thesis, so I thought my lack of research experience was gonna kill me too! I think my personal statement (it was very personal) and my fantastic references helped me get in. If you don't get in, I'd definitely recommend making sure you have great references and really connect in your personal statement. But honestly, I think you'll get in You have sooo much fantastic experience!! Don't give up and good luck!
  12. Wow!! Your experience sounds amazing. Have you been checking ROSI? I was also rejected from Laurier, I think because I have under 3500 hours of relevant experience but I was just accepted to Toronto a few days ago. I wouldn't give up hope because you're definitely competitive! It's so hard to know what schools are looking for, but I would definitely think you'd get in before me based on what you've said so keep checking !!
  13. @heatherandedwin Hey! I know of people who have been rejected from both U of T and York, but I think so far only those that didn't meet the minimum requirements. I think UoT is going to send out rejection letters/waitlist letters probably very soon, and York hasn't even made a first round of admissions (that I know of)!
  14. @Mack Hey Mack! I'm not 100% sure, but I have an 81 average and got into Toronto. I did have a 95 in research methods and have been working in two labs as an RA for the past year. I think Toronto really places an emphasis on research experience and personal statement. Laurier, on the other hand, I was rejected from quite early and I think it's because I had less than 3500 hours of experience, so I think they place a lot of emphasis on experience hours and grades- because I do think my personal statement was strong. York, on the other hand, I have no clue about because I haven't heard back from them yet. Those are the three I applied to Just my 2 cents!
