Thanks for that! Makes a lot of sense, with an interesting twist regarding the credibility factor. Wonder what my school ranked me as....
-
I highly doubt you're at a disadvantage. Don't freak out. Please. lol

From my understanding universities rank their applicants based on the in house interview and application/language test. Don't know how it works for individuals that apply at large, though.

I'm currently in New York, but my decision is supposed to go to Mississippi. I call home everyday, and every time my family starts off any conversation with...nothing arrived! They know that large manila is good, normal envelope ain't so good. The suspense is killing me.

Hi! Check the Google doc: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AriON5PQlVdtdHlKMUhJYlo0bEVXREcxdlJVYUFibnc&hl=en&authkey=CNHpkd4P#gid=8

Hi, Your first question doesn't really have an answer, as Fulbright doesn't divulge such information. Likely your ranking from your University has some sway, however, once the application is in IIE's hands, who knows what they do with it? I'd think it would also vary by country, both regarding IIE's ranking (I've read that some countries just go from how IIE scores your application) and whether they feel you're qualified for whatever (both teaching and getting into the community). Hard to put a finger on exactly how the Finalist round works, from my view anyway. I applied for an ETA to Germany. I've been in a German classroom before (completed a year at a Germany Gymnasium through Congress-Bundestag) and am also very interested in minority [migrationshintergrund] participation within the German educational system. Probably should have applied for a research grant, but I really want to teach. I also stated that I'm a Fussball loving, Mahler singing, Ami Krautophile (in more or less words) whose life was changed by spending a year in Germany, and now I want to pay it back, and hopefully have the same effect on young people there. Long story short, so long as the judges can see that you're genuine in your words, I think you did it right.

Have you given the thread dedicated to Fulbright a look see yet? I think there are a few folks there in your shoes. Additionally, a kind soul created a Google doc that's tracking notifications. It's located here. There's also a link to last year's Google doc somewhere in that maze of a thread, but I'm too lazy to find it! Best of luck! Turkey is amazing.

I studied in Mainz for the Fall semester. Town of about...200k. I really enjoyed my time there as it's a college town with over 40k students. Tons of international students and ERASMUS as well. Just a very dynamic city. I'm in my senior year. Finishing up my undergraduate thesis now.

Hey man! Congratulations! I'm especially happy for you! I wonder when the ETA notifications are going to go out? You research folk didn't have to complete a supplemental application right?
-
Pretty sure that is referring to this.

That's the thing. I think they're purposely vague because, while they can't tell you "NO! You can't find a second job to supplement your monthly wage!" they don't want you pulling 40 hour shifts working as an English tutor neither. It all depends upon the Visa, I think. If your Visa stipulates you can only work/receive a wage for a certain amount of hours per week then that takes care of itself. I won't fret about anything until I know I've actually received the grant, but it's definitely something to think about. Bear in mind most ETAs work 12-20 hours per week, which doesn't include lesson planning, so I'd think it also depends upon work ethic as well. I'm not doing it to make money, but I do want to be pretty comfortable!
-
Hmm. Never seen this information before. I meant actually working. For instance, I know several Americans in Germany making a living teaching English. Would this count as a "source" providing "duplicating benefits"? I believe somewhere in this thread, or a thread from last year, stated that people are allowed to work up until 1400 Euros per month. Thanks for the link!

Just finished a semester in Mainz, and more than enjoyed myself under 800 per month. List of expenses off the top of my head: Single Bedroom Apartment with utilities - 350 Euros per month (if you know what Uni you'll be studying/researching at and have already secured admission, contact them immediately in regards to student dorms.) Food - 100 Euros per month (I'm a meat and potatoes guy, which, essentially, means that I eat rather cheaply. Guess that's also effects of college life) That's it, actually. Wow. I should also say I partied waaaay too much and, therefore, spent simply too much money on...party supplies. I think that's more than doable, myself, especially if additional employment is secured. Don't know how things are in other countries, but everything will be just fine in Germany.
-
Germany is 800 Euros per month for ETA. I believe it's a little bit more for a full grant. But hey...as an ETA you only have to work 15-20 hours per week! I plan on finding additional employment, should I receive the grant, to supplement everything. Depending on where you live, I'm hoping for Berlin personally, cost of living in Germany isn't bad at all.

Ja, it's so very pathetic that idiots want to destroy something open to the public. Thankfully, the creator of the spreadsheet can just go back to an older version.

Ditto. The personal statement translation kicked my butt. I ended up changing a lot of things anyway, though, so it's almost as if I have a new essay. Statement of Grant purpose got the same treatment. Still haven't seen mine off yet, as they don't have to be postmarked until Monday...and I like to take as much time to agonize over these things as possible. Haha. Glutton, I guess.
-
To all my Germany peeps, don't forget that the deadlines are quickly approaching! I don't know about the researchers, but as an ETA the additional essays have to be IN GERMAN! Don't forget! Good luck! -D
-
Hey, hey! I guess it's more so official, now, but I'm most definitely a finalist now! The email confirmed it all! I'm applying for ETA! Where do you propose to conduct your research? -D

Ha. I'm in Germany and am wondering the same thing. I'd think, since Fulbright is sponsored through State, that they'll likely send out the emails towards the end of their work day...as to avoid having to deal with the emails of heartache/confusion/threat until the following Monday. This would mean we wouldn't know until, probably, 11 PM ish? As it's a Friday, I'll just go out and party...my life away. Here's to hoping the morning thereafter will be brightened with a congratulatory email!

Heya Crimson, The PAD = Paedgogischer AustauschDienst, so I'm thinking this application is only regarding ETA applicants. Apologies for the confusion! Don't really have much of an idea what this means in regards to my standing. She had some cryptic words in her message, and, in general, I can see this being something every applicant would fill out. The nature of the application, though, along with the deadline of February 28 AND their wanting to have this sent to both New York and Bonn makes me quite giddy. We'll see what happens. Hope to get a better idea from you lovely folks! -D

Hi all, I am also a fellow ETA candidate to Deutschland. Was contacted a few weeks ago by Cara Doble to send in the PAD supplemental application. Anyone else get that email?
