My GSPIA application is still "incomplete" as of right now. I don't know how fast they move from "complete" to "decision made" though, so who knows when it will be. :/

My Carleton applications are also at the 'preliminary review required" stage.

Hi @Norma955, what was their response when you called them? If you don't mind me asking. My resume hasn't been uploaded which is kind of crazy since I emailed it and mailed it.

I called and she asked for my student number and told me I should check back by the end of the day and that it should all be updated. However, I just received an email from the grad office telling me that everything has been uploaded, I checked the uozone and my application is still "incomplete" and my letter of intent is still not on there. I am not sure if this will have an impact on their decision but I was told a few weeks ago that they don't actually start evaluating applications until mid February because they know the grad office take time to sort through applications.

Someone on last year's forum got accepted to GSPIA on Feb 11 and someone else on Feb 28. The first person sent their docs in early December, so maybe that made a difference. NPSIA: March 12th/13th in 2015, March 21 in 2016. BSIA: around end of March/early April in 2016, at least some offers in early March in 2016.

I doubt I will be receiving a response from GSPIA this month, I had to call in today and notify them that they have yet to upload my statement and that they only updated my resume..... SOOOOO this is going to be a very long wait.

Who here can tell me what is wrong with this paragraph:

The Graduate School of Pubic and International Affairs is the best place for me to pursue these areas of interest through a unique combination of academic and professional development. The academic course of study offered through the international affairs concentration is particularly well-suited to my strengths and interests and to my educational and career objectives. Elective seminars in this chosen area of specialization combined with foundational coursework in the formulation of public policy and the conduct of international affairs will prepare me with the spectrum of knowledge and skills that I need to take my career direction into ...

I am wondering how many - if any - of you had to read this over more than once before finding the ridiculously comical mistake, and if any of you have any thoughts as to how serious this is and if I should call in and ask about sending in a revised copy? Seriously having a heart attack over here. 4 profs who proofread this letter missed this mistake, not to mention me who must have read it 50 times. It took my Aunt who has never even touched a keyboard before to spot it and wait until a day after I had submitted it to get back to me.

I wouldn't be too worried, I also made a mistake by capitalizing H in Human right :( but I was told it isn't a big deal. It took me a few reads to notice your mistake. Don't be too worried. It was obviously unintended and you do know the difference between both...

Be that as it may, I'm still curious as to how the original poster came to this conclusion? Is there empirical evidence to suggest this, or in the very least anecdotal evidence?

My evidence to suggest this is anecdotal - I have friends at GSPIA and NPSIA and from what I gather NPSIA has a more neoliberal, economics focused approach and GSPIA takes a more critically focused one.

This isn't meant to be a criticism of GSPIA or critically focused IR!! Just that it doesn't necessarily suit my research or career interests on a personal level. As mchutchi stated above, different strokes.

I've had some professors mention this to me, personally I would lean more towards GSPIA and I don't think it's criticism of either school, it really depends on your research interests and what kind of setting you prefer.

I forgot to mention this little bit of info that might be useful for aspiring MUNKs, NPSIANs, or GSPIANs

I emailed all 3 program's admissions last year to inquire about how they calculate GPA's for assessment.

Here are the responses in case anyone else was curious:

MUNK:  We look at your final year GPA as being the most reflective of how well you will do in the program which is why we consider it more important than your CGPA. To calculate your final year GPA we look at your last ten senior level courses taken at a 300-400 level. If you have any 100 or 200 level courses they will not be included in the final year calculation.

NPSIA: Essentially what I do is start at your most recent courses and count back until I have a total of 10 credits (typically the last 20 single semester course) and will also calculate  your overall GPA and whichever is higher is what we will use as the GPA for the assessment.

GSPIA:  The Graduate Studies office calculates the admission average using the most recent 60 credits which are usually the last two years.

Thank you for sharing this! My GPA has been consistent over the last 4 years with a small increase in the last two. Do you know what the average grade is for accepted applicants?

Last cycle, there was someone who got a GPSIA acceptance on Feb 11th. Hopefully they're this quick this year too!

I literally submitted all my applications the day they were due, hence I don't think I will be receiving early responses. It really depends on, do they look at the applications that were submitted first or is there an alphabetical order? Or does it go based on a rolling basis (those that submitted first will be evaluated first)?

Also for GSPIA they haven't even uploaded my documents yet (i sent them an email :(). Who else is having the same issue? I wonder how long it'll take them.

Absolutely agree on all your points and want to add that I too found the faculty at NPSIA to be rather narrow in backgrounds, whereas GSPIA has a broader set of professors and senior fellows from different backgrounds of IR that makes it more appealing. As I said earlier, the faculty at NPSIA and their backgrounds have little to do with my research interests, and so I believe applicants should take that into account, unless they intend on going with the coursework option there. I find that applicants, including myself at one point, looked solely at prestige and have since peeled back the layers to be somewhat disappointed with NPSIA. Still, this is subjective and ultimately a decision that involves many factors that vary from person to person.

I definitely agree with you all, I was leaning more towards NPSIA and their clusters are what mainly attracted me to the program, however, GSPIA has a larger diversity of professors in different fields, and my research interests align more with them. On a side note, I am sort of freaking out because I was just reading over my submitted GSPIA statement and I realized one grammar mistake, so I am really bummed out right now :(

Also who here mentioned professors and courses they would like to take in their personal statement?

Im still stressing about these LORs...My referees confirmed today that they would submit them shortly. I need for Carleton to receive AT THE VERY LEAST 1 of my LORs by tonight, or else, Im gonna have to plead my case with Carleton tomorrow morning. Ugh, this is not a fun part of the application process!

Ahh that sounds awful, with some professors you really need to remind them constantly. Best of luck!
