I applied to NPSIA and GSPIA - my only other consideration was MUNK but I wasn't particularly interested in either of the stream options. Plus I would prefer to move to and work in Ottawa. What clusters did you guys pick for NPSIA?

I would prefer to move to Ottawa too, originally I was going to apply to 8 programs but I knew that some of those schools I wouldnt want to attend so there was no point in applying. For clusters I choose project management and humanitarian aid, development policy, and conflict and resolution. What about you?

That's an interesting topic! I was also going to talk about the refugee crisis, but I decided to talk about the politics of cyberspace and cybersecurity.

For NPSIA, I am thinking about either taking the research essay or the thesis route. Would I have to explicitly state this in my letter of intent? I am going back and forth between the two.

I am in the same boat regarding the thesis/research route, I don't think we have to mention it though.

My assumption was that as long as you paid the application fee by the deadline, the supporting documents could arrive beyond the application deadline. I base this assumption on the fact that if one were to apply on the 31st (deadline being the 1st), its not physically possible for everything to get to OttawaU by the next day, unless you physically deliver everything in person, which for obvious reasons not everyone has the ability to do.

You're actually right! I was thinking of NPSIA, but for UOttawa that is the case, as long as you pay and submit the online application portion, everything else can follow after the deadline.

The above comments are worrying me. I am sending my documents to GSPIA today from Vancouver to have them arrive on Monday the 30th. Maybe I am cutting it too close if GSPIA takes forever to open their mail?

Don't worry I am in the same position, I plan on mailing mines out on Monday which means it'll arrive on Tuesday. As long as it arrives before the deadline, you're fine. They know that it takes awhile to go through all the mail and update our files, so they take that into consideration (plus your mail will indicate the day it was mailed out). Plus I was told that grad committees take this into consideration and won't actually start looking at applications until mid February.

I submitted my Munk app just a day before it was due! Who else is applying to Munk? What topic did you focus on/choose for the first question?

Also, who else is applying to NPSIA? The deadline is just a few days away!

I submitted the day of! My topic was on the refugee crisis in the Middle East and how it has hindered the development of Lebanon (among other states). What about you? I am also applying for NPSIA, I am going for the thesis option. Who else plans on taking the thesis route?

Anyone else applied for GPSIA or another UOttawa Masters and still doesn't have all their mailed-in docs checked off, despite having mailed them in weeks ago? My mailed-in transcripts should have arrived in mid-December, but uoZone still hasn't confirmed receipt. I have called them several times and they said they still haven't opened all mail from December. They said to call back on January 31, but if they didn't receive them, it'd be too late to order new ones and mail them (especially since I live abroad, so it will take a few days for even the quickest mail option to arrive there)! UOttawa's system is seriously frustrating!!!

I am applying to GPSIA and the School of Global and International Development (which is at Ottawa). The UOttawa process is extremely frustrating! Their online application doesn't allow you to check the status of your transcript or even anything else -_- plus they are the only school that requires you to actually mail your supporting documents! I called them two days ago and they received my transcript but it took like 2 weeks for that to happen. I have yet to mail in my GPSIA though :(

Same. My letter of intent is still a skeleton draft sitting in a bunch of professors' mailboxes waiting for feedback. Spent the afternoon today lurking around the pol sci department trying to 'randomly' bump into those professors to ask if they had a chance to read it. After an hour I gave up and just sat in my car in the campus parkade imagining up various 'what-now' scenarios where I get rejected from each of the schools I am applying to.

I think we are all in the same position, every time I think I am ready to submit my statement I hold it off and try to edit it again. Needless to say, I think I am making it worse rather than better. The rejection scenarios are pretty overwhelming, stay positive guys! What's the worse that can happen, a no? (Look at me giving this pep talk that I am not even willing to imagine). Countdown till March! Hopefully, some of us at least get into 1 of our top schools. Best of luck!

  8. I promise the last post for the day: Is anyone here applying to MUNK?  I have a few questions regarding the admission statement and the first question which asks us to identify a global affairs question, topic, or problem that interests us, and reflects on how it is being addressed, and/or which provides an innovative approach to addressing it. Are we expected or allowed to cite academic sources here?

I thought so too. But I had emailed my letter of intent and resume to their faculty email and it was "added to my file" so it seems that's fine. The only thing I had to mail was my transcript from another school. Everything else was sent through email and my references submitted their online forums. It has acknowledgement of receipt for my resume, letter of intent and references so!

Are you positive we can email it instead of mail?

I would say 6 pages is far too long - though the standards for an academic resume might be different than a career resume.

But you DEFINITELY want education info on there. I would look at trimming the number of field placements and extracurriculars to only include ones directly related to the program. For example, if you've volunteered for an NGO abroad that would be more relevant than having volunteered for a local political candidate. You want to prioritize both the relevance and recency of what you've done - so something somewhat more relevant that you did 7 years ago is probably less important than something somewhat less relevant you're doing right now.

The thing is those six pages are just the last four years of experience, but you're right I need to take some stuff out. I have been involved with Model United Nations for three years now, and that alone takes up 1/3 of my resume. Do you know what the standard number of pages is?

  11. Hey guys! I have finalized my resume and sorta my first draft for the personal statement and I have a few questions that I am hoping someone can answer. My resume is about 6 pages with a section for academic experience, field placements, and extracurricular involvement. I am not sure if this is too long and if I am supposed to include a section on education. Does anyone know what the standard is? Also, it is usually standard not to repeat what's on the resume in your personal statement, do you guys think this matters?

Guys, I am still working on my statement and I feel reallllly demoralized after several tries.

Any tips on slogging through the mental block?

I'm feeling the same way! I think I've spent way too much time working on my resume... I have to sit down and actually write my statement :( And I agree with Hopeful2017! It always helps to study in a different environment.

I think that's a great average! I know someone who got into GPSIA with a B average. I decided to apply to NPSIA a few days ago because I met a lot of people at Global Affairs who are graduates of that program and loved it! I'm going for global policy, intelligence, and international economic policy! You?

Yours is a great average too! We still have time until the NPSIA deadline, I believe it's January 31st. I am going for project management and humanitarian aid, development policy, and conflict resolution. I also heard they admit students based on their field option and we might not always get our top because we have a choice of three. Best of luck on your applications! You seem to be ahead since you've already submitted everything.

  14. Hey guys!

I am so glad I found this forum, as I have been keeping up with past forums regarding this topic. So let's just say you all gave me a heart attack - I am also applying to NPSIA, GSPIA, MUNK, Waterloo (Masters in Development Practice), and SIDGS (also ottawa).

I have applied for SHHRC and OGS in most of these schools, which by the way is a very time consuming process but hopefully it will pay off!

I've submitted the online portion of my applications but I haven't started my letter of intent yet because school and work have really been stressful, however I'm not too worried but based on what i have read on here, most of you guys have already submitted your application!

Do you guys know what the committees looks for during the selection process? Specifically for NPSIA, MUNK, and GSPIA?

I look forward to your responses!
