  2. Ryerson's Communication & Culture program is very open to cultural studies. Also York University's Social & Political Thought and their new program in Media Studies. I would also suggest Concordia or SFU's Comm programs. (I'm Canadian!)
  3. An alternate at Harvard. the least likely place for anyone to turn down!
  4. Yale will be either late this week or early next week.
  5. offers of admission from York and U of T arrived today. PhD in history.
  6. Done! I just want to know where I stand with them so I know how seriously to actually take being waitlisted. If there are twenty people on it, and I am 19, then no need to pay it any thought, I say~
  7. Wait-listed at NYU! Is it kosher to ask them where I am on the list (or if there is one?)
  8. W-Madison folks: has anyone heard anything, re: funding? My POI suggested there would be news early this week, still none tho. :S
  9. Nothing here either. Tho if they are still sticklers about snailmail I won't hear anything for awhile longer as I'm in Toronto. Applied to NYU too, so apparently I only picked departments that drag their feet.
  10. Those of you applying to NYU - MCC: did you have a POI there? I emailed the chair and she was quite friendly and encouraged my application, but nothing beyond that.

    Madison, WI

How would you kind folks characterize the cost of living in Madison? I'm currently in Toronto, paying about 1100/mth for a one bedroom apartment. I suspect I'll be able to find the same for slightly less, but you never know w/ a college town. Thoughts?
  12. Thanks! Im pretty excited. First I've heard back. Curious about how they arrange campus visits and funding structures. Esp. given the fiscal climate of the state.
  13. Twas me. Received an informal email from my POI.
  14. Yes! Gosh. I am irrationally bummed out about having heard nothing, re: my 7 apps. I applied between three fields and apparently I only picked schools that release decisions late in the game. For comm (phd), I applied to NYU and USC.
  15. haha I am probably going to ask the same thing for every additional post. (also: 'just for an expensive laugh' is wonderful. Too funny!)
  16. A colleague of mine has gone ahead and blocked it on her various devices. Not a bad approach. I wish I had that sort of will, tho! I'd almost certainly find a way around it!
  17. How do the funds work for Canadian PhD students at US institutions? i imagine the school still administers the grant?
  18. heart skipped a beat when I saw the Wisconsin-Madison art history PhD admit. Missed the 'art' bit on the first read through!
  19. Space invader socks! Can't go wrong with 'em.
  20. Creating The Corporate Soul by R. Marchand. Oh also To Smile In Autumn by Gordon Parks.
  21. Just Yale and Harvard for American studies here. Barring any disaster ('your application is somehow just cat memes! Get out!') , really not expecting any news from either until late Feb, early March at the earliest.
  22. Ah I understand - what's more, it looks like deadlines are different for scholars applying from other countries. I am a Canadian student applying to do work in the US. Thanks for the clarification and best of luck!
