I called about Germany. She did not know when results would be released :(

I'd wager that she probably gets a couple calls like that a day, and just tells everyone she doesn't know. Just a guess though.

  2. I'm already thinking about the specifics of next year (too crazy) and wondering if anyone knows how flight arrangements work? Is it a reimbursement, or a stipend? The Spain page says that they give $1,250 for flights, but I'm wondering if I can book a redeye for say $1,000 and use the extra change for set-up costs.

I WAS SELECTED FOR A FULBRIGHT ETA POSITION FOR LA RIOJA SPAIN! I'm a senior in college and teach Spanish in an immersion program once a week to kids and I checked my email during class this evening (my kiddos probably thought I was insane) and I couldn't help but leap for joy once I read my email! I am so lucky! Being a first generation college student and the first in my family to graduate high school, I don't feel I even deserve such a prestigious award. :) Who else will be in La Rioja, Spain with me? We all have to talk!!! :)

Hey where does it tell you the regional placement in the letter? I'm not seeing that anywhere

Well, I caved and called in. Spain ETAs won't be announced today. The woman (Marla Mazer, the contact for Europe on the Fulbright website) didn't know when they'd be announced, but the commission in Spain hasn't released them to the US yet. Guess it seems like I'll be twiddling my thumbs for at least a couple more days if this storm is as bad as you all are saying!

That's too bad! Well at least we know that they're working over there, given that the research grant results came out. Maybe by the end of this week, or at the least next.

Not gonna lie, kind of wish I'd been flat-out rejected rather than designated alternate. I hate being in limbo and there's no way of predicting my chances - could be 1/5 or 1/500 that I'm bumped up! I wish this fate on no one! Also, does anyone else feel like if they're ultimately chosen as an alternate that it won't really feel the same?

    :(

Nah, I got in off the waitlist at my college and it didn't impact my experience at all.

I'm hoping the next one is the Spanish ETA is next cuz the Spanish researches are already out! I dreamed about fulbright all night last night. This is driving me crazy, literally!

I hope so too! I'm so tense right now

Awesome! Let me know if you do! I listed a preference for Galicia (I've studied Galician!), where are you hoping for placement if you become a finalist??

I hope we both get it!

I'm hoping for Madrid!  Probably my favorite city in the world. I put Galicia down as my second choice, though ^_^. I applied for the Auxiliares de Conversación program, which accepts pretty much everyone, so I'll be in Spain no matter what. BUT the Fulbright program is much better run and pays quite a bit more, so I've got all my fingers and toes crossed... Good luck!

I'm new here but I've been reading posts for a few weeks! Also a semifinalist for the Spain ETA and wondering why the research grants were announced but not the ETAs! Good luck everyone, I'm glad J found this forum cuz I am freaking out waiting like you all ?

Probably they just got finished with those sooner, since there are so many fewer research grants. I'm so tempted to call and ask when the ETA awards will be announced

  9. I'm waiting for news on the Spain ETA grant, which is usually announced the same day as the research grant, but so far hasn't (even though research has!!).  I'm wondering: are decisions ever announced over the weekend?  Also, are they only announced during NY government hours (9-5)?  Meaning, should I tune out until Monday, or could this happen anytime??

This is giving me flashbacks to LSAT grayday...but I think this wait is much worse.  Congrats to those of you who have already heard good news!

YES. Between LSAT and this I've been reduced to a puddle of nerves this year.

  11. Do you all think it would be a bad idea to email the Fulbright Commission in my host country (which has a very large ETA program) to ask when the results are coming out? It would just be so helpful for me to know whether it's this month, next month, for planning purposes.

Congrats! I was originally going for research in Nepal, but then my host institution stopped responding to emails ( <_< ) and I switched over to ETA in Malaysia VERY last minute. My FPA was verrrry anxious on my behalf, deciding mid-September and all to swap countries and grant types! But! I guess it worked out! Anyway, I'm still dying to go to Nepal, and I wish you the very best of luck!

Mine said 50% chance for ETA semifinalists, though she said that my university in particular seems to either have people get eliminated in Jan or get the grant in the spring, with very few people making it to be semifinalists and then getting cut later. So statistically, I guess it's around 50%, but maybe particular schools or ways of writing proposals are more compelling once they make it to the host country?

Do you go to a big-name school like Princeton, one that would definitely be known by commissions abroad?

I just got recommended for the Indonesia ETA program!

My FPA said there is about a 70% chance for ETA semi-finalists and 60% for research. Is that similar to what other people are hearing?

Was your FPA talking just about the Indonesia program? My FPA said they thought that you still only have a 1/3 or 1/2 chance of winning, even as a semi-finalist.  That just doesn't seem right to me, though, so I think they might have just been trying to hamper my expectations.  If your FPA was talking about the ETA grant in general being 70% in round two, that would be wonderful.

    Hey everyone!

Created a gradcafe account just so I could share in the anxiety

if you were thinking you had it bad with timezones-- I'm in Europe right now! I've been stressed about this since 3am EST, even though I logically knew no email was going to come in the middle of what is night for NY offices

    It's now 9:45pm, it's been a full day of non-stop anxiety

    ahhhhh!!!!!!

Same for me. It's been a really tough day, literally 12 hours of checking waiting!
