  1. Rejected from McGill - hurts so bad !
  2. Waitlisted at Purdue also! Told that chance of admission is likely, but that he can't say for sure since they don't know how many funded spots they'll have.
  3. Pretty confident that Boston, Toronto, and Syracuse are also rejections, since they've all had a wave go out, and I haven't heard anything. Too early to assume rejection? What do ya'll think
  4. Rejected from Catholic U of America. Wasn't the best fit anyways.
  5. Anybody claiming those BU acceptances and waitlists?
  6. Congrats!! What AOS did you apply for?
  7. I'm not superstitious, but my horoscope uncannily captured the experience of waiting to hear back from grad schools: "You must wait for authorities to make a decision about your future, before your real work can begin."
  8. Toronto acceptances and waitlists are being released.. Anybody heard back?
  9. Have you heard anything from them this year?
  10. Especially given the quality of the schools at which you've been waitlisted - can't imagine the level of anticipation.
  11. I got an email from the Purdue philosophy department to submit my official transcripts - did anybody else get this? I'm hoping that it's an auspicious sign that an acceptance is likely forthcoming. Update: the graduate committee says they've requested transcripts from everyone who "has a middling chance of being admitted." Wtf does that mean? In either case, be on the lookout for that email..
  12. How's everyone doing with their deliberations? I will accept the offer from Western unless I get into: Toronto, McGill, Boston U, Syracuse, Catholic U, or St. Louis. Haven't heard back from ANY of those schools though and it's almost March. Assuming that I was either waitlisted or (more likely) rejected from Syracuse though, since some of their offers have been floating around for awhile now.
  13. In my case, I literally just wasn't prepared for applying to PhDs straight out of my B.A. (was getting married, etc), so I just applied to an M.A. program in my hometown. Even after that M.A., I still wasn't prepared, and I only applied to two PhD programs with late deadlines. This year, I'm finally transferring out, and got into a program that the updated PGR places in the top 40, so I am thrilled, but it really took me forever to get here. I hope I'm not an anomaly in taking forever to sort out where I want to go. I like to think it took me so long because I am young (only 25 - first year PhD), whereas many people in my cohort were a lot older, but I know it's just from needing more time to get up to a good enough level. That's why the MA was indispensible for me.
  14. I'm in favour of doing an MA first unless you get a really attractive PhD offer. Main reasons: 1) Meaningfully expanding your network of contacts through being affiliated with 3 institutions instead of 2. 2) There's some MA-specific federal scholarships (at least in Canada) that can make you a lot more competitive for PhD programs. 3) More time to improve your C.V. and writing sample (unless you're exceptionally precocious and have a top-notch sample by the end of undergrad) -- I had one of my undergrad papers published in a peer-reviewed journal, but it still wasn't --to my judgement-- good enough to compete with the samples of people who've done an MA. 4) Gives you more time for language study (especially 2-year, funded MA programs). In the second year you literally only have TA duties and the thesis to write, so there's ample opportunity to improve on a reading language. 5) Professionalization through presenting at conferences, involvement in student government, and so on. 6) Get letters from professors who are considerably more well connected than your undergrad profs. My list could go on, but I see a lot of value in doing an M.A. before the PhD, unless you get into a program that you'd be happy to get into at the end of your MA anyways..
  15. I'm pretty happy that I got into Western Ontario, but I'm still waiting to hear from my top three picks, McGill, Toronto, and Boston.
  16. Directors of Grad Studies from top programs be like:
  17. Same thing happened for me at Western Ontario. Does anybody pay to get the premium features? I wonder if they are worth it.
  18. Didn't apply to Queen's, but your username is hilarious!
  19. Thank you! It's one of the best programs I applied to, so I am very stoked!
  20. Got an offer from Western Ontario PhD Program! Woooohooooooo!
  21. Maybe there's a feeling of fatalism involved in there being no other options, haha. But, in line with @goss, I only applied to programs at which I'd actually want to study.
  22. I thought it would be useful to start a separate thread in which we discuss decisions, i.e. what offer we intend to accept and why. Also, for seeking advice and support during the hard deliberations ahead. It might be a bit early in the season, but I imagine this thread could become increasingly helpful as April 15th approaches. I'll start by saying that I only have one offer so far, one waitlist (unpromising), and haven't heard back from the other 10 places. If I get rejected everywhere else, then my decision will be made for me. Placement record is the most important factor in my decision, so I might end up taking my current offer even if I get accepted into some of the higher ranked programs. What factors are people using to pick between offers?
  23. Congrats! Have you started to rank the programs you've been admitted to?
