  1. Anyone else applying to Masters programs?

I'm applying to the University of Memphis MSGP program. My research interests include trauma related issues (PTSD, etc) and non-pharmacological treatments for PTSD.

  2. Aaaaaand... I'm out. My POI was nice enough to email me and inform me I didn't make the cut for interviews and while I am still in the running she "rarely" ends up going back to the second round picks. I'm ok with this. I knew it was a long shot.

BTW, Apparently University of Memphis has apparently issued all the invites for the Clinical program according to the two professors I spoke with today (both in the clinical department).

  3. School:  University of Memphis
    Area/Degree: Clinical Psychology PhD Program
Rationalization: I wasn't as qualified as other applicants
Comment: I knew before I applied that it would be a long shot, even though I already work with my POI.
Coping tactics: Working on my MSGP application, staying busy with classes and teaching and generally continuing to be awesome!

(BTW, all invitations for interview have been extended by UofM Clinical PhD program according to other professors I have spoken with in the department).

  4. I talked to one of the Clinical faculty today for the University of Memphis. He told me that invitations to interview have already been issued. That if I hadn't heard anything yet, that meant I was not going to be invited to interview, but since I have also not received a rejection to not give up hope. I could be second/third string. So... now it looks like I may be waiting until April to know anything.

Which i feel i will get rejected becAuse i got rejected once and i want to die lol sorry for the drama. But i want to do genuine research under an advisor with direction .. but it didnt happen. Im sad. Im Drunk. Sorry

    - grieving....

    - i am coping by thinking ... well, i have another year! a year where i can do more research on my own! Expand my knowledge. Deepen my understanding. A lot of time to explore and do and make and think. So better luck next yr...

I'm wondering if for some of my schools (which have already posted rejections) what my status is if mine hasn't changed in the portal. Though I'm of the 'no news is bad news' camp so I'm either waitlisted or lost to the void...

I'm the same. I know some offers have gone out and at least one rejection (according to the results page). But I'm in limbo, so...

  7. Has anyone had an autistic student in their classes? Do you have any suggestions for how I might better teach a student with Autism? They have an assistant with them, so I imagine they will be able to assist me as well. I was only able to meet her in passing as I had to leave for another class.

BTW, I am an undergrad doing the job of a TA teaching breakout sessions for a General Psychology class. This is my second semester teaching these sessions but the first time I've had a student with Autism. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

  8. So, I've seen that some of the applicants for University of Memphis have begun receiving phone calls for interviews. I currently attend UofM and have only applied there for grad school due to not being able to relocate. Here's my problem, I am currently an RA with one of my POI's and will see them on Thursday. They are NOT the type of person that you simply ask "so... hey, what about me?" But I also know I have ZERO poker face. How do I get through the lab meeting without potentially destroying my chances? Technically I do not have to be at the meeting since classes have not started, but I have been trying to make a good impression by attending all the meetings I have been in town for, including tomorrows.

Any suggestions? With ANY amount of luck, someone will call me today and I won't have to worry about it, but I'm not holding my breath. Please help!

That sounds great. Working directly with your POI is always a plus- They have your work ethic as a student to go off of in addition to the application, so if you feel she genuinely expressed interest in serving as your mentor, then you already have your application at the top of the pile.

And I'd tell you to not compare your background to the program (Even though I do this 24/7 as well, can't help myself ugh)- because you have an untraditional background and first hand experience with combat/population of interest.. I doubt other applicants are bringing that to the table. That should speak for itself.. Even if you don't get in this application round (perhaps because of the GRE scores), you already have established rapport with her and can get specific feedback about how to make yourself even more competitive in the next 10 months! :)

Oooh, good point about her expressing interest in being my mentor. I hadn't thought of that!

Not sure I would have an additional 10 months though. I have financial coverage of undergrad through the beginning of August. After that, if Im not in grad school I will likely have to find a job. With any luck I could find one on campus so that I could still have my face around and perhaps volunteer in a lab or two, but I'm hoping it won't come to that lol

BTW, thank you for being so supportive! You're quite a blessing!

I think your background as a veteran is a strong plus for your application. Did you elaborate on your experiences as a combat medic in your SOP? Also, how do you feel about your rec letters- Did you feel they were strong? For the exception of your low Quant and just above cut-off general GPA, I think your application background and package is very, very impressive- I know from experience that advisors are welcoming of veterans pursuing higher education, as they bring a whole different perspective to the field of trauma/PTSD. Lastly- did you reach out to your POI(s?) before your submitted application(s)?

I did elaborate in my SOP somewhat. My LOR were sent directly, so I haven't seen them unfortunately though I'm sure at least 2 of the 3 if not all three were strong. I did reach out to both my POI's. I work in one of my POI's lab (and working with her on a PTSD study as the PI, hopefully submitting to IRB very soon), the other happens to be the department chair but we've had several conversations about mutual research interests (behavior medicine, mindfulness, non pharmaceutical therapies for chronic pain, etc.).

Thank you for the boost of confidence. Seems each time I go to the website to look at past admits to the program, my confidence drops a bit lol

That moment when you get an email from the graduate school that you applied to that hasn't sent emails out yet, and they're wishing you a happy holidays.

Oh NO!!! Yea, I would have been slack-jaw after reading something like that lol But think of it this way... it wasn't a 'no' and they have your correct email address!

  12. Try finding some volunteer work that will fit in with your educational goals... so when (always when not if) you get interviews, you will have something additional to add other than how many series you binged over the holiday lol Or start a new research project, even if its a meta-analysis of other research.

I don't suppose you have a thesis or publication you could pour your soul into?

Thesis... no. Working on 3 different studies, helping two other undergrads with their studies.... sure lol Oh, and getting ready for another 19 credit hour semester to include teaching two hours a week. I'll be plenty busy, but with ADHD, that may or may not be enough to distract me

  14. Thats what they make long sleeve shirts for! Several of the grad students where I am have tattoos. They're nothing overly outrageous, vulgar, etc. I have a total of 3 tattoos on my forearms, it doesn't seem to be an issue. Department chair knows I have them and hasn't said anything (I'm also the only undergraduate TA in the department, so...not sure if that has anything to do with it or shows how little tattoos matter??)

  15. So, I'm applying to the PhD program where I am a current undergrad (not able to relocate and no one else near here has the PhD program I want). Of course, this means I know my POI. I am in her lab. We had our final lab meeting today and she was talking about how one of the grad students will be out next month for two weeks for internship interviews... and all I wanted to do was ask her if I was going to get to interview with her for the PhD program LOL I didn't of course, but oh dear! Thankfully I won't see her for about 3 weeks because of the holidays and a conference trip... I hope I hear something before then so I don't end up biting through my tongue every time I see her!

Anyone else applying in place and know your POI? How do you deal with NOT asking? Not dropping hints? Not becoming a general PITA? LOL

  16. Me: Senior undergraduate, General Psychology

Major: Clinical Psychology (Intend to research and teach)

    Overall/Major GPA, 3.038/3.51.

GRE: 156V, 146Q, 4.5. (Taken twice due to documented test anxiety)

Experience: 8 years as a medic in the US Army; two research labs (PTSD, Psychotherapy) plus additional teaching outcomes research under a third professor; Teaching Assistant for Intro to Psychology (teaching break out groups to 100 students per week as an undergraduate); national spokesperson and public speaker advocating for trained service dogs for veterans with PTSD; Vice-President of the Student Veterans Organization for the University of Memphis; internship through the Veterans Resource Center (organized new student orientation briefing for student veterans as well as a mentorship program); presenting for a teaching colloquium in January to faculty, poster presentation at NCUR in 2017.

Because of my grades/GRE scores, I'm not holding my breath about getting straight into the PhD program, but I am hoping the experience/activities may help.  Unfortunately I am geographically unable to relocate and I can't imagine there is an online MA program that would afford me the opportunity to teach and research lol. So, I've applied to the Clinical PhD program, and will likely apply to the MSGP program if I don't get accepted to the PhD.

  17. I applied to the Clinical Psych program at The University of Memphis. I'm not holding my breath for it, but I can't relocate...so, it is what it is. Thankfully I'm assuming I'll hear one way or the other before the application for the MSGP application is due.
