I have been waiting a bit to commit to my likely PhD program since I am still on the waitlist for 1 other program (great program with nomso great funding). I have declined other offers but haven't made the final commitment to be likely choice. I have been given general funding information from my likely choice but they do not have information on GA positions yet which I am really hoping for. I have also applied for a special fellowship tied to the program. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding pros/cons of committing to the program while waiting since it is very likely that it is where I will end up? Of course, I realize I have until 4/15 but want to be fair to everyone and do what's right for myself and all others involved.

I have accepted the University of Arizona's School Psychology PhD program offer. So happy to have it settled and I did get the additional Fellowship!

@AuntieGrandma How did you receive the update? POI's or admin? I haven't heard anything yet

I reached out to the same individuals who had notified me of my waitlist status and politely asked about the waitlist status. They were both very nice and sent personalized responses.

  4. Update on UCSB's School Psych combined PhD program. They were only able to offer 4 admission offers and all four were accepted. Cost of living was a huge concern anyway but I loved the program. Still waitlisted at U of Oregon and accepted at U of Arizona and U of N Colorado. Will be declining U of N Colorado.

  5. It seems as though waiting to hear about funding is a common hold up on decision making. I'm not sure if this is this same as previous years but it really seems to be a theme. I, like many others, am still waiting for funding from one of my schools that I was accepted at. I expect that the funding will be better than my other acceptance, but I have no way of knowing for sure so I can't reject the other offer yet. In addition, I am waitlisted at 2 wonderful schools and haven't heard a word. Anyone else finding this to be an issue?

  6. While I have not spent much time in Houston, I have found Seattle to be unwelcoming. Even though most people are not natives, they are not very open to outsiders. I really wanted to love Seattle, and I've been there many times, but I wouldn't chose to live there.

I'm doing my undergrad there now, so if you have any specific questions please let me know! I personally love Tucson and UofA. I have never had a professor that I felt was apathetic or did not want me to succeed, only TAs and a professor at one of the community colleges in town, but never one of my professors. Tucson is kind of laid back, "lazy" city, but in a good way. It doesn't have that huge hustle and bustle of Phoenix, but is still big enough for there to be plenty to do.

There are tons of wonderful houses around the campus area that you could purchase for decently cheap. If you are looking for something a little nicer, the Sam Hughes area and east side of town would be ideal. If you're willing to drive (15-20 minutes), out west past the highway (I-10) you can get a gorgeous home with a gorgeous view for cheap. North is also considered a nicer area. I would avoid going too south (not past like 22nd?) as that is where it gets a little more "sketch", but overall the crime in Tucson isn't bad and I have never felt unsafe in the 4 years that I have lived here.

Tucson is plenty dog friendly, especially with a lab, you won't have any trouble. Definitely look up some information about dogs and heat, as sometimes in the summer months it is recommended to either have your dogs wear booties or only walk them late at night when the pavement has cooled or otherwise the pads of their feet can gets burnt since the concrete is so hot. Many places will have a small yard, normally just dirt. If you plan on leaving her outside when you aren't home just make sure that she has a shaded area to stay cool in and plenty of water, though it would be advised to keep her inside throughout the day just for peace of mind.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask!

Thank you so much. Even though my dog is young she is LAZY and a complete indoor dog. We have a huge yard now but she can care less. As long as she has her bathroom "spot", she is happy. As far as walking in the heat, I don't want to do it either so we will for sure do mornings or evenings. She is incredibly good so I don't expect too many issues unless any specific areas are dog "unfriendly." I have occasionally seen restrictions on dog sizes which is a bit silly since she is a way better neighbor dog than my 4 lb Pomeranian ever was! I am hoping to find something nicer, not too big, easy to maintain, and with a small fenced patio/yard. Even a condo/townhouse would be fine.

  8. It is likely that I will start a PhD program at U of A this Fall. I am an older student and would love to buy a small and, relatively, inexpensive place for me and my extremely lazy lab. Safety and dog friendly are extremely important to me. Although, she doesn't require a lot of outdoor space at home since she is very content with a daily walk. Any living suggestions? Is the area very dog friendly?

While nervous Nellie could've worded their comment much better I think its believed that if you're on the waitlist of a less preferred program and have an offer from a preferred program then you also should count waitlist as 'offer to let go'. Its kind of murky but I hope you get your funding information soon and you're happy with it! :)

The 2 waitlisted programs are my top 2 choices. I hope that I have clarified my position. I fully understand the need to let go of offers if I have another preferable offer (remember, I am on wait lists for preferred programs myself). Unfortunately, at this point I do not.

I think you are truly being selfish holding onto that many offers. You need to make a list and rank them and let go of something. You are holding onto spots that people are waiting for. People who don't have any accpetances and are waiting for your spots.

Generally, holding onto more than 2 (or really 1) offers is frowned upon. Of course, it's hard to know if you don't know the funding. So if you haven't already, I would call and ask about it. If the funding is the one issue that distinguishes between the two programs, figuring this out is important. However, generally deciding about climate and the program's pros/cons should be sufficient to decline offers.

I only have 2 offers and I have no information on funding from one of them. I have been told that I will receive that information in mid March approximately. I'm sorry if anyone finds this wrong, but I am not in a position to make a decision without funding information. I'm sure that I'm not alone.

I am letting go of the Masters offer. How can I possibly decide between the other 2 without knowing about funding? The other 2 are wait lists which mean that I have nothing. How is this selfish? You will need to explain yourself if you are going to start name calling. Wow!!

Congratulations on your acceptances! I will wait as long as I can in hopes of getting accepted of the waitlist at my top choice. However, I declined to be considered at the waitlist at one of programs. But I'm also going to decline one of the two admission offers I have received as soon as I decide which of the two programs I prefer to attend.

I think I will do the same. I was actually accepted to a Master level program that I will decline right away since it was my back-up plan. I should be able to decide between the 2 accepted programs once I know more about funding from one of them. However, I do think that I will keep my wait listed programs in play since I really like them both. I just think it will be hard to not accept the "sure thing" as deadlines start to get closer. The wait list status sure does complicate things!

  13. Last week, on my 51st birthday, I was accepted into a PhD program for School Psychology. I am beyond happy. I had a 20 year, very successful career before returning to finish my BA 2 1/2 years ago. My children are grown (my youngest getting his BA one week before me) and my husband and I are able to relocate. I feel incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity at this stage of my life. I am doing this for myself and because I want to make a difference. I hope to enter the world of academia since I would love the opportunity to conduct research and train future school psychologists. I love my exposure to younger students and I think it provides a mutually beneficial relationship. In addition, I am hopeful that I am setting a great example for my kids and my 8 year old granddaughter. Can you tell that I am loving this??  Congratulations to all of the "older" students posting here.

  14. I have an out of town interview for  a PhD program tomorrow and another in a different city on Monday (they both require travel by plane which is booked) and I woke up with a nasty sore throat! Worst timing ever. I never get sick. I feel like I have to go anyway and just power through it. Should I tell them? Any advice would be appreciated.

@AuntieGrandma I am in the same boat -- would also love advice on following up without being a badger

I decided to send a follow up email to the person who sent the email. She passed my message on to one of the PIs that I interviewed with who responded with some additional details. She was very nice but there are still many unknowns, but at least I know a bit more.

  16. I've been waitlisted at one of my top choices of PhD programs. They claim it is a very small list and that they anticipate they will still be admitting students off this list. Does anyone have any experience with being waitlisted? How about advice about following up and appropriate questions regarding status and location on the waitlist?

  17. PhD Interviews scheduled for UC Berkeley, Univ of Arizona, UC Santa Barbara and Univ of Oregon. Still waiting to hear from Univ of No Colorado and Univ of Washington.

Assuming no interview invite from UT-Austin. Hopefully, I won't need my 3 back-up Master program schools.

    Any input, advice??

    Thanks and good luck!

Applied to 7 PhD programs and may apply to 3 specialists programs as back ups if necessary. Applied to UCSB, Univ of Washington, Univ of Oregon, Univ of Texas- Austin, Berkeley, Univ of Northern Colorado, and Univ of Arizona. GPA-3.89, V-166, Q-166, W-5. Anyone else applied to any of these? Any input or advice? So far, a Skype interview with UCSB and invite to on campus interview day in January and invited to on campus interview day at Univ of Arizona. No word from any of the others yet.

Sorry about my mistake above! I wish my quant score was 166! It is only a 151! Sorry about the mistake!
