  1. Does anyone have experience with CUNY's chemistry department? I'm having issues deciding between them (gibney) and TAMU (barondeau). I know TAMU is higher ranked but Gibneys lab does some really awesome research I'd love to get my hands in. And he is, as my current PI put it "someone you would move to New York to work for" So my questions are- what are the labs like on the campuses there? Does it vary wildly by campus or is there a minimum level of standards? How is their instrumentation? Do the students typically get a lot of experience working with different instruments or is it done mostly in collaboration? the visit for this school system is only a half day so I have reservations about being able to learn if I would like the program or not.
  2. I got into TAMU(!!!!) and UMontana today!! Was not expecting the TAMU acceptance this late in the game. TAMU and UGA both have top tier bio-inorganic programs so it will be hard to pick. UGA is out of Texas (yayyyy) but TAMU is better ranked in the national rankings. It will come down to visit days I guess.
  3. How many people have heard from TAMU? They're my reach school that I most want to hear from and I'm wondering how far into sending out acceptances they are
  4. CUNY is starting to look at applications. My PI got an email from a professor there
  5. I don't think that'll effect your chances too much. I had the same fear with TAMU because there was an issue with my transcript. One of my friends actually works in grad admissions at a school and she says the day you submit your application it counts as the "submission date". The supplemental materials that get added later just end up in your folder and don't affect the date. The only issue would be if they had already met and decided a round of acceptances, which is unlikely to have been completed between the 1st and the 6th.
  6. What matters a hell of a lot more than your GPA is your application as a whole. I have a 3.006 major GPA and a 3.3 overall, and I have already been accepted to multiple institutions (with the highest ranked being UGA at #56). My GPA isn't great in the slightest- but what matters is my overall application was well rounded. I have TA and tutor experience, held a couple positions in clubs, and have done lots of research. I don't think you should worry about 'caliber' of program. The best advice I was ever given was "don't apply to a place because of the numbers- apply because you like the work they do there." You'll spend hours pouring over research papers, but when you write your statement of purpose you'll have professors and reasons and it will make you a much stronger applicant. I also reccomend contacting professors whose work interests you- it can't do anything but help. At best, they'll contact you and you will create rapport. At worst, they'll just delete your email and never learn your name.

Got that on my application now that I'm doing better.Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:Applying to Where: UIUC, rice, Montana state (Bozeman), university of Montana (Missoula), CUNY, UGA, wake forest, texas a&m, and university of Alabama ive been accepted to MSU and UGA so far
  8. question- when did you hear back from CUNY? Did you choose to attend it and if so how are you finding it? i submitted my application awhile ago and I haven't heard back yet- although for all I know their due date hasn't passed yet.
  9. Question- what is the housing situation like at MSU? The stipend they gave me (1690/mo) is significantly less than others schools, and from what I can tell the off campus housing seems expensive and not pet-friendly. I have a cat that's a licensed and registered (through my therapist) companion animal, and I would rather pet friendly housing vs. having to show up with a letter to a pet free place
