I just received an email that I was waitlisted for the Phd in Higher Education at UVA.

Rejected from UMD a week ago. :/

Still waiting on John Hopkins, GW, and Harvard.

Has anyone heard from any of these schools? Feeling kind of bummed. Realistically what are the chances of getting off the waitlist for a Phd? Is it like undergrad?

@crazynanc I also got the waitlist notice for UVA's Higher Ed PhD :/ It's my second wait list and I'm not quite sure how to proceed. I didn't apply/haven't heard from any of the other programs you mentioned, but hopefully good news is on the way for you

If anyone has any tips on dealing with wait lists, I'd greatly appreciate it. I.e., should a waitlisted applicant still try to visit campus? Is it appropriate to still ask to talk to current students and professors to learn more about the program, or is it more appropriate to back off a little?

  2. @nikkimx hello! I'm in a related situation, and while I haven't figured out how or when exactly to tell my department that I'm leaving, the best way to alleviate the guilt is to do my best with transitioning/passing on knowledge to whoever would come after me. I had absolutely no information, manual, or records to look through when I started my current position...so I aim to have good records and a manual of sorts to help out whoever they hire for my position next.

Congrats on your acceptances! Hopefully your workplace will be supportive, but even if they are less than supportive, you can still be really proud of your accomplishments. You sound like you're going into your PhD program thoughtfully and will make a great impact on your future students! And who knows, maybe some of your current students will end up going to wherever you end up teaching later on :)

i would also greatly appreciate insight in this issue, so if anyone has actually gone through "breaking the news" please share!

@higheredbee ooh, I'd rather not say, sorry! the doctoral cohorts at the gse are very small and I would probably identify myself :P but happy to take random non-identifying questions if you have any... nice to meet you all! and best of luck these next few weeks as the (hopefully) acceptance letters begin rolling in!

no problem! thanks for the well wishes ^_^

nonidentifying question: Was there anything about Stanford or GSE that surprised you after starting your program?

no need for regrets.  I attempted POI contact at all 10 schools that I applied to last year, and the majority of those (that includes Stanford) never bothered getting back to me. :P

Thanks for the reassurance :) Which program are you in now? @nm2016

I booked my flight too so I'll see you there! I also spoke to a current student at USF, and now I have some reservations about the program based on their experience. If you don't mind sharing what you heard about the program I'd appreciate some more insight! I'll send you a message though so we don't stray too much from this thread.

Congrats @pleemo! I'm a UCLA MSA alum, if you have any questions about it before preview day please feel free to PM me!

  6. Reviving this topic--

I'm starting to receive acceptances (yay!), but am now having to deal with the, "When do I tell my employer?" question. I work full-time in the field related to my doctorate (higher education), but I will not be continuing my job through grad school. I'm still deciding when I will stop working before beginning my program, but I want to be well-prepared when I do share my news. No one knows that I've applied to doctoral programs at all. Is it better to share earlier on (i.e. now), even if I'm not planning to leave until May/June? Or should I wait until decision day/April 15?

If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

    Congrats @higheredbee !! So exciting!

They sent out their acceptances for the MA program too, I was accepted! :)

@rockrmoose congrats to you too! Will they be having admit day for MA students on 3/10 also? Would love to see you there!

Congrats @higheredbee! Do you or anyone know if UMich sent out anything for their "Educational Studies" programs? Specifically "Teaching and Teacher Education"? Fingers crossed...

@PhDinEdu unfortunately I don't know specifically for that program! It sounded like each program within the school of education ran along its own timeline, best of luck waiting it out!

Ah!! Just got an email from the program director that they are recommending me for admission and an official notice will be sent in the next few weeks! I guess I was just getting to anxious while waiting!

Hooray! Congrats @rockrmoose! If you have any questions about the program, feel free to PM me =)

I received a similar recommended for admission and the official notice will be sent afterwards from Indiana University Bloomington! First (preliminary) acceptance!

I'm the EPPE poster! Check your spam! First correspondence I've had that ended up in my spam box. Got it around 5:30 pm (didn't check until around 6). Message me if you have any questions! Happy to answer, but don't want to be too specific on a public forum.

    Congrats!!!

    Keeping hope alive :(

I know a lot of us are waiting for HDLT, so we may as well keep hope alive until we hear from someone in that concentration

My friend who works at HGSE says that he's 98% certain interviews will go out through email tomorrow (and the interviews will be the scheduled for ASAP, like next week). Sending lots of positive vibes to all the PhD applicants!

I'm hoping the 2% chance that it wasn't sent yet came true! Still waiting over here, but hope is waveringggggg

We are four weeks out from Penn's interview weekend (Feb. 17-19), anyone want to make predictions on when invites will come out, based on past years? Looking for ways to pass the time

    when we least expect it!

haha that's so optimistic since it's nearly impossible to forget what the next few weeks will bring.

Although, last night I watched Sing in theaters and that was actually a good 2-hour block of time where I wasn't crazily checking my email ;) it is possible to be distracted from all this!

@higheredbee For UCLA I applied for the MA in HEOC, so I'm assuming MA decisions will be released after PhD decisions. Good luck! I hope we all receive favorable decisions sooner rather than later lol. Fingers crossed!!

Good luck to you as well! I did my M.Ed at UCLA HEOC, and we took several classes with the MA students. Please let me know if you have any questions about the program :)
