My application at york u for msw shows reviewed - unsuccessful today

and I was waitlisted at u of t.

Hard to bite the bullet but I guess I'll think about either switching career paths or continue to work for another year and re-apply next year. I don't know what else to do to improve my application as my GPA and work experience were as good as I thought they could get.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted.

I"m sorry to hear about that; the waitlist always could move at U of T.  Did you apply to other schools?  I would say to definitely keep applying; and look at some other programs outside the city if they fit your goals/where you are at as there may be other programs that are a better fit :) Don't give up!

Hey, just a friendly disagreement here! My GPA is 4.0 and I've received 1 rejection and a very likely rejection from York so far (I haven't heard anything and I know they sent out acceptances/waitlists), so it's not very true that a high GPA will get you into any school. I have experience as well (I'm not a working professional though), but I think research experience is where I am lacking most. So just don't get let down if you don't hear anything, sometimes it's factors out of our control! A high GPA won't necessarily guarantee an acceptance, just a heads up :)

Keep your hope up too though even if you havn't heard anything (although my application is stronger with experience rather than GPA)!  I just emailed York because I still havn't heard anything and I applied for part-time advanced, said my file is already with the graduate department and under consideration.  So it sounds like they still keep a list after confirmed acceptances/rejections and waitlist notifications go out and maybe still roll them out as others have mentioned.  For myself I just would like to know either way :)

First and foremost, my fingers are crossed for all you two year applicants!

Now: this might not belong here, but I am in desperate need of advice.

It looks like I'll be attending Windsor's Advanced Standing program in May.

Here is my problem. The school gave me a bit of money for an entrance scholarship, on the CONDITION, I do not work full-time. I was hoping to continue working full-time from May-August, and just drive up to Windsor once a week. Consequently, I purchased a used vehicle, so I could conveniently do this. Additionally, I have been paying back my former OSAP loans (more than the minimum), and now have very little money. I just reapplied for OSAP and my estimate was a joke. You would think that if I reliably paid back a large portion of my former loans, they would give me some grace.

Anyone have any insight on what I can do in this situation?

Happy to hear about the program at Windsor!  Great that you have a plan :)  I was just wondering, are you in the position to take out a bank loan? If you don't already have a mortgage, and have a decent credit score, you may be apply to apply for loan's...?  My sister couldn't apply for OSAP because of income situations, but got a bank loan and co-signer too; may be able to have a family member co-sign it so you can get approved too.

You'll definitely need to ask OSAP about that. I know someone who had a brand new car and was declined OSAP. When she asked why, she said the value of her car was too high. Basically, she was expected to sell it and use the money for school. So instead she kept the car, lived with her parents and drove a few hours per day for school. It wasn't ideal, but she made it work.

It might not be the same for a house though because you need a place to live - especially if you have children. I think you'd need to contact them and ask.

Something else to keep in mind... If you are an Ontario resident and plan to study in Alberta, you might not be eligible for most scholarships and awards. I know this is the cause for Laurier. There are about 70 types of awards and scholarships for all grad students (not just MSW) and if you are not considered an Ontario resident (defined by your province of residence 12 mths before beginning the program), you are only considered for about 7 of them. You might want to look into this at Calgary if it's important to you.

Yes, good point - thanks!  Ah that's too bad for your friend but I'm glad she found a way!  You would think that your primary residence is considered to be a basic need but you never know with OSAP like you say.

  5. 1 hour ago, thelionking said:

Do you live in Ontario? If so, you can apply for OSAP (or the equivalent in your home province). There is a certain annual income amount you need to fall under to qualify though and I don't know what it is. If you are married, you will also need to report your spouse's income.

If you do not qualify, you can apply for a line of credit at a bank. I know someone who did this in BC because her loan did not cover all of her expenses. The interest rate will be higher than a government student loan, however, and interest will begin from the day you take the money, rather than 6 months after you graduate.

You might also qualify for an entrance scholarship from your school or a university scholarship after you begin the program.

If these options aren't appealing to you, then you can always try to defer your offer for one year due to financial reasons so that you will have some time to save the money you need ,or apply to a part time program so you can work while you study. Windsor's MSW for working professionals is a good option because the classes are only offered on the weekend. You can also look into Laurier, UofT and some online options like U of Waterloo.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hey, thanks!  I have some savings but I"m thinking of just a little extra help later on.  I started to look into OSAP; i didn't need to use it for my undergrad but I could possibly apply for that.  I was thinking of a bank loan as well but I already have a mortgage too and don't want to add too much debt; or more to my mortgage - although it's always an option.  I definitely plan on doing MSW (as of now, U of Calgary).  I will probably see what I can do this year and apply for a bank loan next year; or apply to OSAP  :)

    Hello all,

I got accepted yesterday to the MSW part time advanced standing program at York which I am please to accept!

    Anyone else accepted?

    Thank you

    Lauren

Congrats!  You must be thrilled :)  Good to see that they are still rolling out acceptances for part-time advanced standing program (I thought it might have been too late) - thanks for sharing!

I called York today and the admissions said offers will be released through March and April. I then spoke with someone from the Social Work department and she said offers for the Advanced Standing Part Time program will be out the end of March, and that it will change on MyFile before an e-mail is sent out.

After the call I checked MyFile and decisions was changed to unsuccessful :(. Does anyone know if York is willing to give feedback regarding your application.

Ah, I am sorry to hear this.  They may send out an email or letter afterwards with an explanation.  I know UVIC emailed me a day after my status changed to give feedback but I wasn't sure if the others did that.  Mine still says No Decision Yet for advanced standing/part-time.

    Hi Everyone,

I have been following this thread religiously the past month, and want to thank everyone for the words of encouragement!

I am wondering if those that have heard from York, applied for the Advanced Standing Part Time Program. I really thought I would have heard from them by now. However what I gather from the thread is that they sent first offers of admissions on Thursday February  23 and have given people ten days to accept, leaving the next roll out date for possibly March 7 or 8 (ten business days).

    Thanks,

And congrats to those that have been accepted!

I am waiting to hear back from York too, advanced standing Part-time and I have heard nothing yet so no worries, still some who are in the same boat :)

What are you planning to do about this? I need to accept their offer by Monday (27th) and don't want to pay $500 to reserve a spot I may not take. I replied to the email earlier this week to ask for an extension and they passed it off to someone higher up to see if it's possible but I haven't heard anything yet.

Yeah, I was going to accept it too on Monday and pay the deposit, even though I'm still waiting to hear back from York and victoria, but I want to make sure I have a spot in a program.  I was going to be okay losing the deposit if I got into York as I have no idea how my application stacks up there. But my online account says "Deposit Exempted" though - does it say that for you?

Just came home to find out I've been waitlisted at UofT. 3 down 1 to go! A little disappointing, especially since they said I have until April 18 to let them know... but Windsor begins in May. Wah

Anyone know if the waitlist for advanced standing at UofT is stream specific?

And how many Laurier puts on the waitlist?

Still trying to accept that I may have to wait another year if I can't find the funds to move to Windsor.

You have some tough decisions - congrats too!  Yes, finding the funds is another issues too - that's what hit me after excitement.  Would you still confirm the deposit with Windsor if you have time to secure the funds...?  Hope you hear back soon from some of these schools :)

I'm not too down about it. Just wanting to know so I can plan for the future! No I didn't apply because I felt the specializations for me aren't quite what I'm looking for in terms of courses an learning experience, i received a rehabiliation and disability studies degree and my bsw. just thought after 2 degrees from u of c, I feel I have fairly decent foundation of the human services sector here so I thought to diversify and try a new experience in a different city :D

Ah okay - wow two degrees, that's quite impressive!  Yes, for me it's the opposite for Toronto in that the programs don't really speak to where I want to go; I went to Ryerson for my BSW. I'd like to hopefully combine social work with business a bit (start a business combined with social good/giving back to the community) which is why the leadership specialization interested me.  I'd like to do an MBA in future, but that can be a 10 year goal and lots of studying/preparing for that, lol.  Cool - thanks for the positive info about u of Calg as Calgary is still my go to if I don't hear positive news from York.

I had also gotten a rejection letter very early from Laurier and I live in Calgary. I definitely felt however that my experiences accumulated to over 3500 hours, even calculated it too. I applied to the advanced standing msw. Waiting on U of T, Ryerson and York still. So crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

I'm sorry to hear about your letter from Laurier - but I hope good news will come in the next few weeks for you from T.O!  I wanted to ask if it's ok - you didn't apply to Calgary?  It may be the program I go to (online) but I don't know much about Calgary...

I have not received anything from York and am wondering if York does rolling admissions or if not receiving an email today means I didn't get in or got wait-listed.  I checked my status on myfile and it still says "no decision."

I was wondering the same thing but I think they may stagger it over a few days - someone got accepted to U of Calg the day before I got an email - so I assume we are still okay for tomorrow and early next week :)  Because I havn't heard of others getting any notification either way from York yet....

OMG Just received an offer to York via email! ITS HAPPENING! Sitting in bed crying way too much! After applying three years in a row and complete the post HBSW at lake head, I can say it was all worth it now!

Congrats SW_Student!  You must be so excited :)  Good to hear York is sending out notifications now too!

Nothing for York :(   I'm tempted to call them and ask when they will release admissions but then I may not be so happy with my results ;p

Just want to know what direction to move my life in.

Yes, me too!  I think this is the key week though - last full week of February (at least for advanced standing) so I'm expecting any day.  It's kind of like everything else is on hold until you know.  Unless I've already got a rejection letter in the mail (havn't been able to check this week).  Anybody hear anything from U of Victoria too?

  16. Hey lindaMSW - I think diversifying would be good, having some back-ups, so maybe try and find 3 or 4 that you can apply to next year that would fit your lifestyle/where you are at in terms of location of study or method.  I know Windsor has some flexible programs and some coursework that is closer to the city as well I think.

Also you can go back and take a research course or a stats course to strengthen that part of your application if GPA is something you want to boost.  I recently found these courses for a friend of mine, they are through Athabasca - one can do them all online. Keep working on it and building up your social work experiences for your resume!  As someone on here already said if you are building up your career in that direction and your resume reflects that, so will your opportunities :)

This may be completely wrong... but does anyone else feel like Canadian schools are taking particularly long to release admissions decisions?! I've already heard of tons of American/European schools releasing decisions, it makes me even more anxious to hear back!

Yeah, maybe the ones sending notifications out later are the programs that have more applications to go through as well...?  I think some programs are letting people know early Feb, but my guess is the ones that havn't probably had a lot of applications to sort through.  Hopefully next week (crossing fingers....)!

Congratulations 2017hoping !!! I received acceptance today for the Leadership Specialization at UofC and am extremely excited! I did try to 'accept' in the myUofC portal but it still listed my application as being completed and not yet admitted so I hope that changes so i can get the ball rolling :)

Thanks!  AWESOME - congrats to you as well!  I'm sure you were excited :)  So I guess we might be session mates!  I checked my online account to see if things changed and then checked the letter again and it says it won't be updated for 72 hours after you receive the email so I"m guessing by next Monday you should be able to see the links for it okay.  I am just waiting to hear back from two others, but then we don't have a lot of time to let them know too!

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! I'm happy to report that I received an acceptance today (~6pm Atlantic) via email to Calgary's 1 Year Clinical Specialization. So relieved. I hope you all start receiving news in the not-so-distant future! :)

I received acceptance email from Calgary yesterday at 5 (eastern time) to the Leadership specialization.  Pretty excited about it as I applied years ago to U of T and York and didn't get in.  Still waiting to hear back from others - but I was surprised we need to let Calgary know by March 1st, not a lot of time.

Ah, great to hear!  Congratulations, that's AWESOME!  I am waiting to hear back from Calgary's one year program too, the Leadership in Human Services specialization.  Thanks for letting us know :)
