That would explain it. I went through all the emails I received from IIE and my host country's commission and the only thing stated was "provides round trip transportation" with no details of amount or how to go about getting in contact with the Fulbright travel agent, etc. I'll write to my contact at IIE. Thanks!

I actually jumped the gun and bought my tickets before I knew any details because I found a good deal XD I'm not sure about your host country, but mine is providing $1500 for a round trip. This money will be given to me in the country's currency at some later point (when I'm already there?). An important detail to keep in mind is that you must abide by the Fly America Act which states that if you are using federal funding to purchase plane tickets then, it must be with an American-owned airline. There are exceptions and its different for each country. Luckily for me, my case fell within those exceptions (thank goodness). You can always ask your country's coordinator for the final word on whether you can get away with using a non-American airline. You would end up doing this if there were no American flights to that location or if America had an agreement with the country(ies) you were landing in, etc.

Don't you love planning for it all!? I'm about to wrap up my last semester of college and it is so hard to concentrate! XP

I am also super confused about this. I got my finalist notification a week ago from IIE but I haven't heard anything from the Commission yet (even though I already uploaded the two documents on the self service portal and have been approved). Can the ETAs in Colombia chime in to see if you have received word from the commission there?

Also, the instructions on the finalist resource website said to upload the terms and conditions page to the self-service portal and to send a copy to the Fulbright Commission of your country. Does that mean to e-mail over the signed terms and conditions to the Fulbright commission contact listed in the website? (I feel really, really incompetent right now, but I have been re-reading everything three times to make sure I didn't miss anything and I am still confused??).

I just emailed my terms and conditions to the usual contact for my country and they responded with a thank you. In reference to the deadlines...I think they are more to just make sure that people don't lollygag on all the paperwork. They say there's a two week deadline for the Grant info document but, my country won't even be sending that out to me until May apparently...

I'm still waiting for the letter. Got acceptance on the 17th.

Have you emailed them? My country's contact is very good at getting back to answer questions.

To those of you who are Finalists, how soon did the Commission get in touch with you after you were notified? Was it only after you submitted the documents, or..?

I think it depends on the country. The Polish commission sent me an email the day after I was notified with a confirmation letter.

Fulbright usually has some extra funds!

Oh no...so sorry to hear this. I'll keep my eyes and ears peeled as I continue to scour profellow.com etc. for opportunities. I think you can respond to Fulbright and request more funds. That's worth a try, right?

edit: Assuming you didn't apply at-large, would your home institution potentially help with costs? Again, I think it's worth asking. Lord knows we don't get anything we don't ask for in research universities.

My friend did a Fulbright to Poland. When he went, the stipend was incredibly generous compared to the cost of living. He repeatedly mentioned they lived like kings in comparison to other university aged students in Krakov.

How low is it? How does it compare with the cost of living in Poland?

When you say ask Fulbright..who am I really asking? I feel like it would be frowned upon to ask the host country for more money...so who would I talk to?

Today I've already gone around to most of my professors asking them for funding advice. My adviser got really excited and wants to do a news piece on me now XD Hopefully we can cobble something together :/ I've been told that most of the opportunities people know about are for graduate students and since I won't be enrolled anywhere...

It's pretty frustrating because I was very clear in my proposal that my research involved a lot of travel and I was told not to worry about money because the amount provided would "be enough". How can they even know that without a budget!? Hrmph! I'm not expecting to even stay in hotels most of the time but $500 is just not going to cut it..

The living stipend is fine. Could be higher (I'm basically making $8.40 an hour) but it is acceptable. I don't think I'll be living like royalty though, my husband is coming with me so I can't stay in a cheap dorm or something and rent in Krakow is higher than some other Polish cities due to it being a tourist attraction. For anyone interested, the dependent allowance is $250 per month for Poland at least.

If I can just find some more research money it would be ok. Although I must admit, I was looking forward to being able to relax on the budgeting for once..:P

  6. Sooo.. I've already been contacted by my host country and their research allowance is laughable. Does anyone know of any scholarships or grants that I could apply for to supplement the Fulbright funding? Research area is related to endangered plant conservation, specifically mosses. Any advice would really be appreciated.

Oh my goodness the anxiety! Why do you think so, though?

And oh my goodness the first book was so good! I got the 2nd one and I've already read half of it!

Well the past two years it has been 3/19 and 3/20. Now that I look at those dates on a calendar I've realized that 4/20 last year was a Sunday! :0 How strange! So going by those, it would make sense for next week to be more likely than this week.

It just gets better and better with each book! So glad you are enjoying the series :D Now you can watch the show too!

Do you think we will hear about it this week? I'm so scared.

I think we will be lucky if we find out this week. I think it might be more likely that we find out early the next week (starting with the 20th). Fingers crossed for this week though! I can't go on this way!

P.S. How is Outlander going? :)

  10. Research in Poland! I have been unable to keep myself from believing that I will get it, thus daydreaming about all the things I will do when over there! >< A rejection would be devastating at this point :/

Here's to the power of positive thinking!! :)

I heard about it at the very end of my interview - they let me know that they would be making a decision in 2 weeks, but that the notification would be delayed until April. There wasn't a specific reason given as to why.

Is this referring to a specific country or all Fulbrights? I hope not! D: I'm putting off so many big decisions...

A couple nights ago I dreamed I got an email from Fulbright with a big thumbs down in the subject line, so... xD

But during the waking hours I keep busy enough with grad school and teaching. I had an interview for a summer teaching job today, and am working on an internship application for the summer, too. Enough to keep my conscious mind from obsessing!

Dreams are crazy man. A few weeks ago I had a bizarre dream that Hillary Clinton picked me up in a private jet and flew me to the White House where we went into some tiny crawlspace room with a long observation window and she told me that I got the Fulbright XD The Fulbright is making us all crazy!

Has anyone else been having weird Fulbright-induced dreams?

Yeah, I get that but it felt like repeating stuff and I was in the mindset from the statements never to repeat myself. (Another case of me psyching myself out, I guess).

Ugh, that is actually really scary then, to be honest, because if they just interviewed me without reading my statements then...I am pretty sure that I am a non-select -- my interview was pretty weak by itself. But! Since I write stream of consciousness and I am just remembering now, Justyna (I think that was the main interviewer's name) mentioned that I had traveled a fair bit which means she had to have read my application or my statement to know that so they must have at least skimmed them.

We'll just have to wait to find out! :D Almost 1 month left! UGH!!

Yeah, it threw me off, too. The stuff about how to engage the community, career goals, why Poland. These were all in the Fulbright app, either it be on the online application or the statements. I am beginning to think that at some level these interviews are just a chance to put a face to an application and interact with us a little.

They do the screen until the February 8th and I would guess they are now in the process of selecting their candidates to send to the FFSB for final approval ("By March 3, 2017: In addition to entering Country Decisions in Embark, Posts and Commissions must email both the IIE and ECA Branch Offices with the Country Decision list (including Principal, Alternates, and Non-Selects): source here).

Some of those questions make sense to me to ask, in case we want to elaborate on what we wrote or something. But I was actually born in Poland and I speak Polish. These are both things that are notable on my application but when both topics came up they were like, "Oh really!?". Seemed strange to me.

  15. @indexes and @hank.img when you were being interviewed by the Polish committee did something ever come up that they were completely unaware of but was clearly stated in your application? It happened during my interview at least twice. You'd think they would read the application beforehand.

Ooh, 4 hours of sleep sounds rough-- but it probably made your mind remember it as worse than it really was! I think it was really clear to the interviewers that I was nervous too (I rambled some and definitely didn't feel like I nailed my answers), and I bet they see that all the time. And they still have our proposals and other materials-- I don't think any interview could TOTALLY negate all that, you know? At least that's what I'm hoping.

I talked to a current Fulbrighter (in Jordan) and they said this is totally normal, if that helps to ease your nerves. :) Also no need stressing about something that has passed, so now you can relax and breathe. Fingers crossed for you, @Mossy.artist!

Sorry I just never responded to these encouraging responses! I had my interview on a Monday and was stuck in an emotional rut over it for the rest of the week! Its just so stressful knowing that I could have messed up months and months of work and waiting in 20 minutes! I am hoping that I was just remembering it badly like you suggested @bluet. And hearing that Fulbrighters being flustered in their interviews is normal is very reassuring @indexes. I do hope that interviewers can be understanding and read more into our essays than our interview performance!

It went okay! Not perfect because nerves always get me, but I didn't totally blank or anything. :) How was yours?

I'm actually a bit stressed about mine. My nerves were brain blocking me for days before the interview PLUS I worked the entire day before and 4-7am before my 9am interview so I only had about 4 hours of sleep. I did not feel prepared at all!! I'm ashamed to say it but I almost feel as if I "Trumped" some of my replies. I was so flustered! Its really been messing with me ever since to know that I could have messed up months and months of hard work and waiting in 20 minutes. Hopefully I'm just blowing the whole thing out of proportion in my memory. Its just driving me crazy!
