In a smaller department, you can easily have more direct contact with faculty. It will be easier to get to know them. It will also be easier to get to know not just your cohort but also make acquaintances with older cohorts. All these matter for your success in a program.

Per an email from Vanderbilt's DGS, they had 170 applicants and will only be taking 10. Applicants will be notified of their status no later than March 3rd.

Or another Cornell? If it was someone, great, but leaving the statement "thought I was done for this cycle!" is really bizarre...
