  1. Thanks everyone! @NaitoBaron CU Boulder does seem to have a great record of placing their students in top PhD programs. Plus, as an avid outdoorsman, I've always romanticized moving out West, and Boulder is the bonafide nexus for outdoor enthusiasts in the contiguous US. Seems like a real good choice for me, and I feel so lucky to have received admission so early in the process. @kochan I'm sure the Japanese adcom at CU Boulder has a different timeline than that of the Chinese counterpart. Hoping you receive some good news soon! @SUMMER715 Congrats on the interview with Chicago! What will you be studying there? I met an absolutely amazing PhD student of Korean studies (she is an incredible poet as well) at a conference this past Fall. I'll definitely be looking into their PhD program when it comes time for me to apply. @kotatsumuri Forgive me for not looking back through the pages, but how many programs are you applying to, again? You're going for Japanese literature (not sure which period), correct? Wishing you the best of luck!
  2. Hey Folks, Quick update on CU Boulder: I was accepted with a teaching assistantship and a fellowship. Quite pleased with this offer, as it will allow me to attain a Master's degree debt free. The department is also filled with scholars interested in Chinese literature; seems like a pretty great place to do an MA! Looking forward to hearing back from other schools, but will probably go with Boulder because of the financial incentive. How is everyone else doing? Any word from other schools?
  3. @NaitoBaron Looks like an interesting read--I'll have to add it to my list! Can't wait to delve more into the Tang. "同是天涯沦落人,相逢何必曾相识!" - 白居易
  4. @kochan I didn't have much contact with CU Boulder prior to submitting my application. I received an email claiming that the department was impressed with my application. The interview seemed more like they were trying to attract me to the department (they weren't grilling me at all), so I'm presuming I'll get in there (fingers crossed). She claimed I should hear from them anytime now. I wouldn't worry too much if you already had contact with a POI. Maybe they'll just send you an acceptance. I traveled and talked to around 5/6 professors. I emailed around 12 but several of them didn't get back to me. I also talked with graduate students and assistant professors; these people proved to be very useful. @NaitoBaron Each seems to have its advantages. The most important issue seems to be your rapport with the POI/department. Working with a tenure-track assistant professor could prove more useful to your career, as they will be around longer before retirement, but working with a distinguished professor provides you with a breadth of experience to draw advice from. Each seems to have its pros and cons. @lordtiandao Congrats on hearing back from Princeton! I heard Anna Shields is pretty great! Keep us posted.
  5. Nice job, Naito! Anything else from Stanford? Has anyone heard anything from UC Berkeley?
  6. @lordtiandao That's what I came to the conclusion of. Seems most programs have separate deadlines for the FLAS—UC Berkeley's admissions committee even seems to select students for application to the FLAS. @NaitoBaron I noticed Stanford had two separate programs. I'm pretty sure I applied to CEAS as well. I, too, am applying to just Master's programs.
  7. Hi Folks, Hope everyone's applications are going well! I have turned in 7 thus far. I still have three more to go, but they're all due in Jan./Feb. @NaitoBaron Good to see you join the discussion! I'm interested in the warring states as well—although I'm focusing more on Six Dynasties and Tang/Song Dynasties. Glad to see another Chinese medievalist! On the subject of Stanford: I applied there as well and indicated that I was submitting an application for the FLAS, but I received no email from them. I, like @lordtiandao, was under the assumption that you didn't have to apply to the FLAS and actually submit their essay for a little while; however, I remember that someone said the deadline was in early January, so I'm going to check again to see what the deal is. On another note, anyone applying to CU Boulder? I just received a nice email from them and have an interview next Thursday! Anyone have a similar experience? I wasn't expecting anything so soon...
  8. @spicyramen Thanks for your kind words! Looking forward to having the exam done with!
  9. @kyjin Thanks for your words! I'll try and relax about the GRE a little and focus more on my statements in the next month.
  10. @kotatsumuri Taking the exam in two weeks. I'm really nervous. I'm hoping to have my verbal above 160, but it has been a while since I have done math (oh, humanities majors...) I'm hoping to have my quant at at least 153-158; I know it's not high, but I've almost done all I can with the time I have left. @spicyramen I already have well drafted statements from previous scholarship applications. With that being said, they still need to be changed quite a bit for my apps, but I'm not too worried about it. Going to start working on them very soon! Speaking of GREs, how important are they for EALC programs? Will the score ranges I mentioned above be acceptable? I am applying to 10 programs (including 5 ivies) and worried that my scores might not cut it. All other parts of my application should be pretty good. I'm just so nervous about the stupid GRE!!! Keep going everyone! Once these next two months are over, we can relax a little bit! I'm so looking forward to it!!!
  11. @machacreampuff No worries! Thanks for your reply! How are everyone else's applications going? I am feeling the heat, as I'm taking my GREs soon and preparing all of my statements... But it's getting there. My research interests lie in pre-modern Chinese (literary Chinese) poetry. Shooting for a mix of ivies and state schools. 加油!
  12. @kotatsumuri Great advice! I'm planning on applying mostly to MAs at this point. I'll be contacting departments next week to find out more about their programs.
  13. @machacreampuff Thanks for the useful information. Did you get funded for Harvard's RSEA program? I was going to apply to their PhD program, but I don't have the experience you stated as necessary to gain acceptance. Also, do you contact the universities to find out if there is funding for the programs? I was planning on applying to PhD programs at Harvard, UPenn, Stanford, Yale (maybe because of Michael Hunter) and Columbia (haven't found a great POI yet) because the programs seem to be fully funded. I have about five other non-ivy MA programs that I'm applying to as well. If I apply to those PhD programs and get rejected, might they offer a spot in their MA programs based on the PhD program application? My stats: Undergrad: UMASS Amherst Major: Chinese Language and Lit. GPA: 3.81 Etc: Studied in China for two semesters under the auspices of the Gilman Scholarship; Was part of UMASS's honor's college; Wrote an honor's thesis (40 pg.) on the northern song dynasty poet Su Shi; Won 1st prize at the five-college Chinese speech competition (advanced level); founded and acted as president of UMASS's Chinese Conversation Club. GREs: have been studying to take them this November. Professional experience (since graduation): Working with a startup company which consults Chinese high school students who wish to study in the US; working as a private tutor focused on ESL for Chinese students. Other: Newly published poet in a respected literary journal; will hopefully have one more publication by the time of my applications. Research interests: Classical Chinese Literature, specifically Tang and Song dynasty poetry, and its relation to contemporary ideological, philosophical and artistic thought. Any feedback would be great!
